In response to all the MacFarlane hate from the Oscars for the purpose of conversation

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 08:38 AM PST

I really just need to get this off of my chest. I can't sign onto any site without being bombarded by the fact that if I laughed at anything Seth MacFarlane said on Oscar night than I'm automatically a hate-spewing misogynist. You know what? The truth is, I laughed. In fact I laughed my ass off. And I think that a few things need to be said on behalf of what I can only assume are at least 5 maybe 6 other people out there who are afraid to say that they laughed out of fear of a public tarring and feathering.

Before I say anything, I should probably say that I am not a woman, but I identify as a feminist in a broad sense. I think it would be stupid in this day and age not to support the advancement of women's rights and women's issues and I am a strong advocate and supporter of organizations like Planned Parenthood as well as a staunch supporter of workplace equality and a woman's right to choose. Not that this disqualifies any negative opinion of what I'm about to say, but I think it should be noted that I do not consider myself in any way to be a hate-spewing misogynist.

Thing number 1: The nature of the monologue's jokes: The entire point of the Capt. Kirk device was to show a different show that never existed and if it had aired in that form, would have been an utter disaster. Of course, they aired the 'alternate reality' version anyway as an apophasis: calling attention to the extreme point and immediately dismissing it but using its presence for rhetorical (or comedic) effect. The entire point of the "We Saw Your Boobs" song was to hang a lampshade on the fact that jokes like that ARE stupid and tasteless. Lowering the performances of these great actresses in challenging roles to nothing more than a peep show for immature men IS tasteless. AND THAT'S THE POINT. By using that as an alternate way of opening the show, but dismissing it as something that obviously wouldn't fly with any modern audience, MacFarlane is showing that he is in fact NOT a misogynist. He's saying, "This joke is awful...should we do it anyway?" and answering with a resounding no in the form of Channing Tatum and Charlize Theron cutting a rug with a fantastic ballroom dance routine.

Thing number 2: Body Image: As to the jokes about women using the flu to keep weight off? Guess what? Women in Hollywood go to ridiculous extremes to keep their figure. Maybe not purposely contracting the stomach flu, but still, pretty extreme methods. I distinctly remember reading an interview where Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt bemoan how hungry they were while filming The Devil Wears Prada so that they could fit into their wardrobe. That happened. And it can be made light of and made fun of. Yes you can make the argument that comes full circle about body image being the reason for the starvation diet in the first place, and this is a place where we can make more positive strides in getting rid of these stigmas on body image. And guess what? Those stigmas go both ways too. Men feel just as much pressure to look like Ryan Gosling or Brad Pitt as women do to look like Mila Kunis or Anne Hathaway. (As a side note here, 'positive body image' is not synonymous with 'I'm fat and I'm proud.' Past a certain point, you're only creating health problems for yourself, whatever gender you are).

As a side note, I also need to say that if you read OK or Star or People or any other tasteless celebrity tabloid and you're offended that MacFarlane made fun of Scarlett Johansson's misfortune in the last year, you're part of the problem and also the reason that we have this nasty, voyeuristic celebrity-obsessed culture in the first place.

Thing number 3: Gay bashing: As for the use of the Los Angeles Gay Men's Choir, did it ever cross your mind that from a producer's standpoint, they hired the choir because they were good? MacFarlane's sensibilities often include full orchestral accompaniment and soft-shoe wrapping paper around a much darker joke (the theme song to Ted is a perfect example of this), but did it ever occur that maybe he just wanted a huge choir for comedic effect and then wrote a bit of a low-brow joke around it? Possibly. Are jokes a little more amplified when they're sang on stage by a full choral accompaniment? Oh definitely. Could he have just wanted to say the word 'gay' on TV? Maybe. But belittling the LA Gay Men's Choir for solely being a comedic device undermines the fact that they can sing really damn well!

Thing number 4: Standardized outrage: It's coming to a point where every once in awhile, an activism group comes out just to wave their arms around and show everyone how offended they are. I'm really just getting tired of everyone waving their PCenis around and seeing who can seem more offended. The Onion's joke about the 9 year old? Too far. A lot of MacFarlane's schtick toward the end? Not funny. But in the end, he's a comedian. His greatest sin is of being unfunny. NOT being offensive.

That's all I got for now.
