'30 Rock': The 10 best episodes

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 11:31 AM PST

'30 Rock' first came on the air in 2006, and since then, it's become a critical darling and an audience favorite. The show has won, at various points in its run, Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Alec Baldwin), Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Tina Fey), and multiple wins for guest spots by actors on the show. The show wraps up its run on Jan. 31 with the last of its seventh-season episodes.

We are certainly sad to say goodbye, but the memories will always be sweet.

From what the viewers see of the ensemble on '30 Rock,' much of the writing and acting on the show seems to be based on the fundamentals of improvisation, techniques such as always saying yes, not asking questions, and making connections. The show is a team effort – there are no stars. The actors also seem to work to bring something to every scene and to recognize that it's okay if not every joke works. This is the reason that '30 Rock' has been so successful: they explore, they provoke thought, and sometimes they fail. We all have our personal favorite characters, of course, but every role contributes to a larger whole – there is a unity of purpose to the show that helps every episode reach its manic conclusion, even if that purpose is just to have fun. In the business, they call that an "ensemble."

Watching "30 Rock" without understanding improv or sketch comedy (or having watched 'The Muppets' as a child) leads some to call it silly or stupid. To be fair, its brilliance has sometimes been surpassed by its wackiness. But the whole show feels like one big long-form improvisation: what would happen if these people actually worked together for seven years?

The writing staff has an ear for true-to-character dialogue, making their one-liners the best in television. But the best part of watching it is that you can tell everyone involved is having fun.

Another reason that '30 Rock' works so well is its willingness to experiment with potentially volatile subjects. '30 Rock' is hands-down the bravest show on television. Critics don't like every episode, and they don't have a wide viewership, but those that do watch end up becoming hardcore fans.

The show exposes and ridicules the typical rules of a sitcom while simultaneously following all of them. In the future, anyone teaching a master class on sitcoms would be well advised to include '30 Rock' in their curriculum.

We've assembled a list of 10 of our favorite episodes. Here they are, in no particular order. Enjoy!

Artist: The Bear & The Sea
Hails From: Portland, Ore.
Song: "Sandblonde"
Album: Trees Like You

Sounds Like: Teen Daze, Sun Glitters
In Their Words: "It's pretty obvious that 'Sandblonde' has some watery ocean vibes to it and that's really where the influence came from, sort of culling from the idea of music made directly under the tides. But a little known fact about it is that I conceived the title of the track from a misinterpretation of lyrics from the Underworld song 'Bruce Lee.' Towards the end, Karl Hyde says 'tanglon' and in my head I heard 'sandblonde' at the time. I realized what an idiot I was well after the fact but I still liked the word, so I decided to use it for something of my own."

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers will go head to head in this Sunday's Super Bowl — but, let's face it, half the people who tune in will primarily be interested in the commercials rather than the game. The World's End Photos Find Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at the First Post Pub

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 09:54 AM PST

Arriving in theaters October 19 is The World's End, writer-director Edgar Wright and writer-star Simon Pegg's conclusion to their Three Flavors Cornetto, a.k.a. The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy. Universal Pictures has released two new photos that get us into the drinking spirit of this comedy. Simon Pegg stars as Gary King, who brings his old pals back together on the 20th anniversary of their epic attempt at a pub crawl that spans 12 bars, with The World's End as the last stop. Take a look at these photos featuring Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Nick Frost, and Eddie Marsan, then read on to see what Simon Pegg had to say about this comedy romp.

The World's End Photo 2

The World's End closes out the trilogy that includes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. However, Simon Pegg revealed that this final installment is much larger in scope, and that each pub name foreshadows what happens inside.

"It's a much bigger proposition than the other two films. When you've seen the film, you'll be able to relate each pub name to what happens inside."

The pub names were unveiled with the very first poster, which you can check out here.

World's End Pub Poster

As laid out, the pub names do read like a list of DVD chapter stops. Let's hope we get to see a two-headed dog and a mermaid in this comedy thriller! Also of note, Simon Pegg says that there are 12 pubs. There are only 11 on the poster. Could the The World's End actually not be the final pub on this crawl? Its a mystery, indeed.

The World's End comes to theaters October 25th, 2013 and stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Marsan, Julian Seager, Paul Kennington. The film is directed by Edgar Wright.
