'Encyclopedia Gothica' Brings Definition to Halloween

The MisfitsAmazon.com

Goth journalist, and sometime-Spinner scribe, Liisa Ladouceur recently released the 'Encyclopedia Gothica,' an astoundingly complete compendium of all things black and scary. Though the book extends far beyond Goth music, we've pulled together a special Halloween-themed collection of musical encyclopedic excerpts. Enjoy! (Mwa-ha-ha!)

Horror Punk: Style of punk rock attributed to the Misfits and practiced by their clones in which almost every song is about a monster or other creepy character from a horror film or comic and features a spirited chorus of "whoa-oh-ohs!" Horror Punk rockers look quite a bit like Death Rockers (i.e. one can never have too many skull T-shirts), but the music is quite a bit goofier.

Vote! Do You Believe Ruth Madoff Didn't Know About the Scam?

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 10:59 AM PDT

Ruth Madoff, wife of disgraced Ponzi-schemer Bernie Madoff, and her surviving son, Andrew, appeared on the "Today" show Monday to discuss Ruth's revealing interview on "60 Minutes." Although pressed by host Matt Lauer, Ruth and Andrew maintain that they knew nothing about Bernie's nefarious business. Watch the interview. As for the elder Madoffs' suicide pact, Lauer told Ruth and Andrew that he received a call from Bernie in prison, who said he lied to the NY Times when he said, "I never thought of taking my life, it's just not the way I am." Bernie confessed he and Ruth indeed swallowed pills in an effort to kill themselves. Donald Trump also weighed in on Ruth's claim of innocence in a video blog, saying "Don't believe it."

More From Michael Shannon On Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel And His General Zod Role

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 10:19 AM PDT

Source: Collider Speaking to Collider about Boardwalk Empire, actor Michael Shannon shared the following details about his role as General Zod in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel: Are you prepared for the onslaught with Man of Steel? SHANNON: Honestly, no. I'm not prepared for that, in any way, shape or form. It gives me shivers. I'll do the best I can. It's funny because it used to just be that you do the work and the work spoke for itself. But, when you get on a project like that, obviously it's like half the job is being a cheerleader for the team. You've got to go around, stirring up the pot, as it were. But, it's hard to do that when they tell you, "Oh, and by the way, you can't say anything about it. You can't tell anybody anything about it. The only thing you should say is that it's really great."

Director James Mangold On The Wolverine And Hugh Jackman

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 09:04 AM PDT

Source: MTV MTV News briefly spoke with Mangold about "The Wolverine" during an interview about the Blu-ray release of "Cop Land," and the director was more than up for discussing his work with Jackman on a Wolverine that's "more intense than we've ever seen him." "I was just really intrigued by the script and the project and the boldness of making a really personal Wolverine movie," Mangold said while assuring fans that the "serious action" is still very much there. Umm, one thing the Wolverine didn't really have was the serious action, especially when it came time for people to use their mutant powers. Agent Zero gliding/jumping/teleporting over that fence had to be one of the worst SFX sequences I've ever seen in a movie. But moving back to Mangold, he goes on to state, "But it's also more of a journey for the character in a completely foreign

The Horrors Are Appalled by 'Lazy, Rubbish' Music Journalism

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 01:00 PM PDT

The HorrorsXL Recordings

As the Horrors emerge from their crypt with third full-length Skying in hand, the British five-piece claim they've fallen victim to the international music press.

"Can we talk about how lazy most journalists are?" keyboardist Tom Furse asks Spinner. "Because that's probably the reason everything you read is the same opening two or three paragraphs: 'Horrors turned up in 2007 with their shocking debut, 'Strange House' and then managed to do some sort of turn-around with their Geoff Barrow Portishead-produced 'Primary Colours.' It's exactly the same thing."

"I personally think it's so documented and scrutinized because there's some understanding that we'll be very important in five years time," guitarist Josh Hayward laughs. "But I think a lot of journalists would feel uncomfortable having to express their own personal views. Having to put too much of themselves in the article."

"I'd prefer if they wrote more about how the record makes them feel, and less about the constant referencing to other people's work," adds Furse. "Because it detracts from the fact that it's actually an original piece of music itself. It's not anyone else's work -- it's our own."

Trying to find a movie that has bugged me for years.

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 08:23 AM PDT

I must have seen this movie a dozen times in the early 90's on a movie channel. The memory is hazy, it was a fantasy flick, a group of adventurers were attempting to enter into this labryinth/castle.

The one scene I do remember vividly has the main hero, a human, and his companion, a man sized cyclops who had shoulder length hair. They are stuck in a room and there is one exit but the door is collapsing from the top. Cyclops guy braces the collapsing wall for the hero to get through and ends up getting crushed.

I really hope someone out in redditland will be able to help me, this has been bugging me for years...

This isn't new or exciting, but is 28 Days Later supposed to be scary?

I mean, I know the back of the box is always synergy bullshit, but scariest movie since the Exorcist? I didn't find this movie scary really at all.

It was an AMAZING movie though. I loved everything about it, but was curious as to how other people felt about the scariness of it. Same goes for Halloween (at least 1). One of my favorite movies ever, but not really scary.

I have to say I appreciate they didn't go all out jump scary in 28DL though. So yeah, great movies, not that scary, to me, how do you all feel?

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 Could Get R Rated Blu-ray Release

    Posted: 29 Oct 2011 11:11 AM PDT

Kristen Stewart confirms R rated cut of Breaking Dawn

We've long known that director Bill Condon was shooting Stephenie Meyer's final novel The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn in tact, with the hopes of getting a PG-13 somewhere down the line of edits. In a recent Glamour Magazine interview, actress Kristen Stewart revealed that the first cut of her and costar Robert Pattinson's infamous Honeymoon sex scene did, in fact, garner an R rating from the MPAA.

"It was so weird, it didn't even feel like we were doing a Twilight film. I was like, 'Bella! What are you doing? Wow! What is happening here?! It was very surreal. We [originally] got rated R. They re-cut it."

The actress then went onto discuss being on lockdown so that pictures of Bella's wedding dress didn't leak online.

"I had to be shrouded in secrecy the entire two days of filming. It was crazy... I was on full lockdown, as if I was wearing millions of dollars' worth of diamonds."

Along with that raunchy sex scene, there were quite a few other moments in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 that were filmed beyond the complacency of a PG-13 rating, specifically that moment where Edward chews through Bella's stomach with his vampire teeth to retrieve their vampire baby.

The original R rated cut may eventually be released on Blu-ray and DVD sometime in the future. Look for it when interest in the property is starting to wane, and Summit wants you to buy the entire franchise all over again. An R rated The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 only available in such a set is quite the incentive. Even for those who pretend to hate these fey movies.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 comes to theaters November 18th, 2011 and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Anna Kendrick, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli. The film is directed by Bill Condon.

Category Six Causes a Dust Up at New Line Cinemas

Category Six lands at New Line Cinema

Despite Apollo 18 doing lackluster business at the Box Office this past September, studios are continuing to turn towards the "found footage" genre, because they are cheap, easy, and require no big name actors to attract an audience. The latest such movie to move forward is Category Six, which was just acquired by New Line Cinema.

The movie, from screenwriter John Swetnam, revolves around the worst tornado in US history, as survived by a group of high school students. Most of the action seen in the movie will be captured via cell phones, smart books, and other recording devices. The entire narrative will be told through a first-person POV.

Todd Garner, who came up with the initial idea, will produce through his Broken Road production banner. There is no set start date for principle photography at this time.

Hopefully, New Line will find it in their hearts to squeeze in a Bill Paxton cameo. Maybe he can play the part of the cow this time.

Category Six is in development .

Fraggle Rock Finds Home with New Regency

Fraggle Rock heads to New Regency

It is unclear at this time if Fraggle Rock will land on the big screen in its original incarnation, with popular characters Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red appearing as puppets. Or if New Regency, who recently acquired the rights to the property, will turn it into a live-action CGI mix, like their popular franchise Alvin and the Chipmunks, which continues this December with the third film Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked.

New Regency acquired the property rights to Jim Henson's popular HBO family show yesterday, which originally ran for five seasons starting in 1983. The film has long been in the planning stages, and now, it will finally move forward.

Fraggle Rock revolves around a group of rock dwelling creatures who come in contact with human beings. They are at first believed to be aliens. There is no set start date for this potential family film franchise, but it will likely arrive in time for the holidays in 2013. Fans can expect a rush on Fraggle Rock if The Muppets reboot proves to be a winner at the box office this Thanksgiving.

Fraggle Rock is in development . The film is directed by Cory Edwards.

The Wolverine Is a Foreign Language Superhero Drama Says James Mangold

    Posted: 29 Oct 2011 10:13 AM PDT

The Wolverine will be in line with Chinatown and Outlaw Josey Wales

It's unclear if director James Mangold is trying to offer hope or rile up ire with his latest comments about Hugh Jackman's impending sequel The Wolverine. In one breath, he is calling it, "a foreign-language superhero drama." Which is on the verge of sounding a bit dry. Then, he goes onto compare the movie to two great classics, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Chinatown, which sounds quite exciting.

So, which is it? Is James Mangold planning to turn one of the most popular mutant franchises of all time into an Art House sleeper that doesn't play well on a Friday night? Or is he planning one of the greatest Western-mystery-superhero genre flicks ever concocted? Well, he hopes for the latter.

This is what the Knight and Day and 3:10 to Yuma director had to say about taking on the Marvel property for 20th Century Fox.

"You could actually just tell a story about this amazing character from the start, just the way they do when you really read a comic. You don't have to spend the first hour saying how they were born; you can actually just find them in an emotional space, in the middle of action, and what happens is you're not crowded with cutting to nine other action heroes."

James Mangold admits that he was very apprehensive about taking on the film once Darren Aronofsky dropped out, but he has since talked it over with the Black Swan director.

"I spoke to Darren a bit about it before I ended up taking it on. But I will tell you that when Darren stepped off, I was in the middle of doing a lot of other things, and when it was brought up to me, I actually didn't even consider it...Several months went by and I hadn't even really read it, and later when they came back to me and I kind of took it in, and a lot of that hand-wringing had kind of died down. What I saw was some really promising material, and to me an interesting character played by a great friend of mine who's a terrific actor, Hugh Jackman."

The director then went onto speak more about why he actually wanted to take on the project.

"Part of the reason I'm doing this picture is because it isn't a conventional superhero movie. It isn't an origin story, so I'm freed from that burden, and it also isn't a save-the-world movie, which most of them are. It's actually a character piece; I actually think it has more in common with The Outlaw Josey Wales and Chinatown, what we're doing, than the conventional, 'will Wolverine and his compatriots save the world from this thermonuclear device' question. It's an adventure following such a unique character in a really unique environment. The fact that half of the characters speak Japanese, this is like a foreign-language superhero movie. It's as much a drama and a detective story and a film noir, with high-octane action as it is anything like a conventional tentpole film. This movie is much more an intense psychological and action-packed character piece, that's much more about Logan getting lost in this very unique and insulated world of Japanese culture, gangster culture, and ninja culture," he said. "The fighting is going to be unique because it's all influenced by Japanese martial arts."
