/r/movies, in your opinion, what is the one movie that is perfectly directed?

Posted: 09 Feb 2013 10:55 AM PST

Probably for me it would be Jaws. It could have been just another B movie monster flick, but it was so much more than that. Perfectly paced, great acting, memorable scenes, and one of the most intense movies of all time.

Jason Bateman Rejoins This Is Where I Leave You for Director Shawn Levy

Jason Bateman rejoins This is Where I Leave You

Back in November, we reported that Shawn Levy had taken over directorial duties on the dysfunctional family comedy This Is Where I Leave You, which was originally being developed for Adam Shankman to direct.

At the time, Jason Bateman had dropped out of the project. But now, he is returning as the male lead. Other actors once attached to the project include Malin Akerman, Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Jason Sudeikis, and Goldie Hawn. Though, its not clear if any of them are still attached as casting moves forward.

It is known that Shawn Levy is looking for a female lead to play opposite Jason Bateman. Reading for the role are Ari Graynor, Isla Fisher, Zoe Saldana, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kathryn Hahn.

Amy Adams is also in the mix, but she is not being asked to read for the role, which indicates that she is the project's first choice.

The movie is an adaptation of Jonathan Tropper's popular novel, which follows a man (Jason Bateman) who must bring his eccentric family back together after his father's funeral. He asks the clan to spend seven days together under the same roof to mourn their recent loss, which leads to some unexpected complications. The female role currently being sought is Penny, a woman who used to work for the deceased father, and is the longtime object of unrequited love for the son.

More casting is expected to be announced soon. The film is planning a 2014 release date.

This Is Where I Leave You is in development and stars Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Jason Sudeikis, Goldie Hawn. The film is directed by Shawn Levy.

Burning Questions of the Damned: Are Naevia's Loose-Cannon Ways a Liability for Spartacus?

Who needs leaders anyway?

On Friday's Spartacus: War of the Damned, both Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) and Marcus Crassus (Simon Merrells) may as well have been missing for all the heed their underlings paid them. Although that may seem like an oversimplification of the situation, wartime is when obedience to the leadership hierarchy is crucial, lest chaos rule.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Be it concert or charity auction, Bruce Springsteen can bring any event to a crescendo.

Springsteen briefly took over auctioneering duties before being honored as MusiCares person of the year Friday night, exhorting the crowd to bid on a signed Fender electric guitar by amping up the deal. The 63-year-old rock 'n' roll star moved the bid north from $60,000 by offering a series of sweeteners.

"That's right, a one-hour guitar lesson with me," Springsteen shouted. "And a ride in my Harley Davidson sidecar. So dig in, one-percenters."

Alfred Hitchcock, in a conversation with French director Francois Truffaut, explains surprise vs. suspense

Posted: 09 Feb 2013 08:43 AM PST

We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let us suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware that the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions this same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There's a bomb beneath you and it's about to explode!" In the first scene we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story.

Qtd. in Francois Truffaut, Hitchcock, rev. ed. (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1984), 73.
