Dine Alone Grammy Awards: Canadian Indie's Connection to Lumineers, Civil Wars

Back in December, when the list of 2013 Grammy Awards nominees dropped, some of Canada's biggest exports were absent from the list.

While some Canadians complained that Nickelback, Feist, and 18-year-old pop prodigy (and purported pot aficionado) Justin Bieber were snubbed, the folks at Toronto-based indie label Dine Alone Records were doing a happy dance.

That's because the Canadian indie label has three artists vying for a total of five awards at the Grammys -- the Civil Wars (best song written for visual media, best country duo/group performance,) the Lumineers (best Americana album, best new artist) and Marilyn Manson (best hard rock/metal performance).

Atoms for Peace Tour, Devendra Banhart's New Song & More -- News Roundup

We already knew plans were in the works for an Atoms For Peace debut album and tour dates, but the details have been a bit fuzzy -- until today. Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich will play a series of live DJ sets dressed up album launch parties to introduce Amok to London, Berlin, and New York in the coming months. [Consequence of Sound]

Devendra Banhart has premiered a new track from his upcoming album, Mala, on Venezuelan music blog Cochinopop. The Spanish-language acoustic ballad is an emotionally straightforward effort, reminiscent of the oft-bearded Venezuelan-American singer/songwriter's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (2007). Banhart's reprise of his sound circa-Natalie Portman is refreshing, especially considering his recent penchant for (NSFW) graphic music videos. [Nonesuch]

NOAH Actor Douglas Booth Joins The Cast Of The Wachowskis' JUPITER ASCENDING

Posted: 08 Feb 2013 09:22 AM PST

According to Variety, young actor Douglas Booth has signed on to join the already impressive cast for Andy and Lana Wachowski's (The Matrix) upcoming sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending. Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean (who was announced earlier this week) are also on board to star in the Warner Bros.-distributed movie, which will also be written by The Wachowskis. Booth will soon be seen in Paramount Pictures and Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic Noah, and he (as well as Redmayne, coincidentally) was reportedly up for the Harry Osborn role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Specifics on his character in the film are currently unknown. Jupiter Ascending "is set in a time where humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder, and it follows a woman who has been targeted for assassination by the queen of the universe." No release date has been set yet, and the film is

Jessica Alba to Star as Astronaut Maysie Overall in Weightless

Jessica Alba to star in Weightless

Myriad Pictures announced today that Jessica Alba is in final negotiations to star in Weightless, an original screenplay from Academy Award-nominated writer and first-time director Milo Addica (Monster's Ball, Birth, The King). Alba will play the female lead of American astronaut, Maysie Overall. Myriad Pictures will begin pre-selling the film at the Berlin Film Festival this week.

Weightless is set in the near-future and is the story of Maysie Overall, a female astronaut who has dreamed of exploring outer space her whole life. Just as she is about to fulfill her life-long dream, she is unwittingly the cause of a tragic, fatal motorcycle accident. Rather than risk losing the opportunity to join the space shuttle's next mission, Maysie chooses to ignore her conscience and flees the scene of the accident. Following the space shuttle's successful flight, an unexpected mechanical failure causes the shuttle to crash on re-entry to earth. Maysie miraculously survives the crash. Once on the road to recovery, Maysie's survival against the odds begins to needle her conscience and leads her to re-visit the scene of the fatal motorbike accident. Riddled with guilt, she cautiously reaches out to the victim's family and meets the motorcycle rider's brother, who is also a local police officer. Maysie then forms a unique bond with the victim's brother that quickly evolves into a steamy affair. Maysie begins to find it impossible to suppress her deep-seeded feelings of guilt and keep the truth hidden that will ultimately set them both free.

Myriad's Kirk D'Amico will produce with Steve Norris, alongside the UK's Apollo Productions and its partners, Pinewood Studios and VFX powerhouse Double Negative.

Weightless comes to theaters in 2014 and stars Jessica Alba. The film is directed by Milo Addica.

A serious discussion about the portrayal of Venom in [The Amazing Spider-Man] franchise

Posted: 08 Feb 2013 08:22 AM PST

Let me start by saying that the current trilogy should have no Venom, no symbiotes, maybe even no Eddie Brock. This should only be looked at as an idea for a second trilogy, with it's own story-arc.

Here's my bulletpoint solution to portrayal of Venom

  1. As in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, Eddie should be shown to be friends with Peter when they were young. In a flashback opening scene or something of the sort, he should be shown to be less intelligent than Peter, and he should be shown to resent this a little, but not enough to have it hurt their friendship. I'm thinking some scenes where they are both about 10 years old could work.

  2. Eddie meets Peter again when they are both adults and out of high school, as they are both getting jobs at the Daily Bugle. Eddie is failing to best Peter at this job, and as the first film wears on and a villain is introduced, we have a subplot of Eddie beginning to grow resentful of Peter again. This is shown to be pathetic because of how physically, Eddie is much larger than Peter. This also adds an element of threat to the rivalry.

  3. At some point the Peter/Eddie relationship comes to a head for the first film, because Peter discovers that Eddie's father was working on a cure for cancer (again, like the Ultimates universe). Peter convinces Eddie to let him see it, and Eddie gives him a chance to look at it a bit. Eddie becomes uneasy, and cuts Peter's examination short, so Peter steals a sample. (EDIT: Parker stealing is a bit contentious, it seems, so this could be something like he drops a sample on accident and it sticks to the bottom of his shoe, and he finds it later and doesn't tell Eddie)

  4. The core villain plot begins to result in Peter finding that he is unable to beat the villain, but the suit sample does it's thing, binds to Peter, and gives him the strength to defeat the first film's Big Baddie.

  1. The next film begins with Peter already wearing the symbiote suit. Eddie realizes what it was from, and connects two and two, realizing that Parker is Spider-Man.

  2. The story continues with Peter fighting a new villain, all the while becoming increasingly aggressive. Peter ends up killing a side-villain (for real this time, no Spider-Man 3 fakeout) and realizes he has to get rid of the suit and destroy the lab sample. Unfortunately, this makes his final fight with the main villain much more difficult, but he overcomes with the power of his self-reliance and you know the drill. Peter gets rid of the suit and destroys the remaining sample, but leaves a bit of it behind, that the camera lingers on.

  3. The story ends with Eddie Brock confronting Peter, fighting him, only to find that Peter is even stronger than him, which finally makes him crack. All this time, Eddie was better than Peter because he was stronger, or so he thought. Eddie flips out, destroying his father's old lab. In the process, he gets the sample on him, and he Venoms out. Cut to black, end of film. Cliffhanger!

  1. The next and final film in the story arc is focused on Venom finally. It's been built up over three films, so the battle is huge and sprawling. Venom is scary as shit, but also quite funny, just as he should be. This is all about Eddie's bruised ego inflating on a power trip, and Parker has to pull out all the stops.

  2. This one ends in uncertainty. Venom's been defeated, Eddie learns a lesson, and all the loose ties are tied off.

Some things to think about: Do you think this story arc can survive three films? By making it peripheral to the other villains I'm hoping it can be drawn across three films and be brought into greater importance until the final film, where it becomes the main focus.

Who do you think can play Eddie Brock? We saw a very sniveling and sarcastic Eddie in Topher Grace's performance, but I think we need to see a more complex and large Eddie. Maybe one that is superficially a big nice guy, but inside a man with a bruised ego who thinks he can be better than Peter by being physically stronger, if he fails at everything else. I'm thinking, and hear me out, Channing Tatum.

It's a casting suggestion based on a recent attempt at rumor-starting by someone else, but after laughing I thought seriously about it, and honestly, it's a good option. Channing is usually cast in comedic fare where he plays a pretty jock sort of character, but he's an actor, not a model. I want to see him cut loose and go on an ego trip and hurt people, not just be a nice guy.

A question I'm seeing often here is: Why not Carnage in the third film?

The reason is this. If we focus on one guy in a symbiote suit for the second film, then the third film focus on ANOTHER guy in a symbiote suit, it will seem redundant to audiences. Comic fans would be fine, but for non-comic fans, it could feel like they are "running out of ideas".

TL;DR: I want the story of venom to be handled as a trilogy after the current one, with Peter being reintroduced to Eddie Brock after years apart, and then getting the suit at the end, spending the whole second film in the suit until then end, and then Eddie becomes Venom in a cliffhanger at the end of the second film, then the third film has Venom as the main villain. Oh, and Channing Tatum would be a good Eddie Brock.

Question about scene in "Trading Places." How were the Dukes able to get updated stock prices in their car without the Internet?

Last night I watched "Trading Places" on Netflix. Love this movie. Does anyone know how the Duke brothers were able to get updated by the second stock prices in their car without the Internet? The movie was made in 1983, did the extremely rich have access to a basic type of Internet connection or is this scene totally unrealistic?
