Joe Jackson Steps Out With Iggy Pop, Questlove on Duke Ellington Covers Album

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 01:00 PM PDT

JoeJackson.com

Joe Jackson arrived on the music scene in 1979 and had a hit single right out of the box in the form of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" His debut, Look Sharp! was also the first of three albums he made with his original band: Jackson on keyboards and vocals, Gary Sanford on guitar, Graham Maby on bass and Dave Houghton on drums. They were a tight, talented combo but by 1981, Jackson had disbanded them to make a swing album -- one of many left turns he would take in his lengthy career.

In the three decades since then, Jackson has alternated between rock and roll and other genres -- not only swing but also jazz and classical. He recently called Spinner from Germany, where he now makes his home, to discuss his new album, The Duke. Released earlier this week, the LP is a collection of Duke Ellington covers, only the second time in his career that Jackson has recorded an album of songs he didn't write himself. He is joined by an eclectic list of collaborators on the album, to say the least. Iggy Pop contributes vocals to "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" while Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson drums on "Rockin' in Rhythm." Other guests include jazz violinist Regina Carter, rock guitar god Steve Vai and Euro-Latin trio Zuco 103.

Though Jackson has sometimes had a reputation for being reclusive or snobby, nothing could be further from the truth. In conversation, he is often self-deprecating, open and quick to credit others. And his admiration for Ellington goes beyond the music. "When he was starting out [in] the late 1920s, he was a young, very talented black man in a racist society," says Jackson. "And the way he handled that was with complete and utter dignity. I find Ellington a very inspiring figure even though I'm a white guy from England."

When did you first hear Duke Ellington's music?

I must have been around 15 or 16 years old. I don't remember what the first [song] that I heard was but I was certainly aware of Ellington at that point because that was when I got interested in jazz. Later on, I studied it a bit more. You know, when I was a music student, 18, 19, I got more interested, especially in Ellington's later music. So I've been an Ellington fan for a long time.

The 20,000 square foot, 15 bedroom, 16 bathroom mansion was modeled after the White House and Versailles. Coldwell-Banker agent Sally Forster Jones said Jackson "just walked in and gasped. He heard about it the property, came to view it and loved it, loved every aspect of it."

Three Reasons CBM Fans Should See TED

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 09:26 AM PDT

Seth McFarlane's TED hit theaters last night, and I have to say that it was pretty darn funny. Seth McFarlane is probably best known for creating FAMILY GUY, but he steps up to the plate as co-writer and director. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and FAMILY GUY regular Mila Kunis. Not only does the film feature a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear, but it also make light of child stars, hookers, Boston women, Asians, Jews, Muslims and almost every other race known to man. TED also includes a few things directed specifically to comic book movie fans. Here are the three big ones... There may have been others, but I was too busy laughing to notice. For X-Men Fans the film is narrated by Patrick Stewart, X-Man fans favorite Professor X. You'll definitely hear things that you never thought would come out of Professor X's mouth! It's not made that clear whether the title of this storyline is "Punisher: War Zone" or "Lock and Load", although it seems far more likely that the former will be the new name of the book. In hindsight, the fact that all of the teasers released this week were penciled by regular The Punisher artist Marco Checchetto should have pointed to the vigilante's involvement. Will we see him taking on the Marvel Universe, and if so, why?! Sound off with your

THE WALKING DEAD: Glen Mazzara Says That The Governor Storyline Could Be A 'Longterm Arc'

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 09:59 AM PDT

In a new interview with The Wrap, The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara talked about what we can expect from the upcoming third season, but the more interesting tidbits of this interview are definitely about the show's new human villain, The Governor, played by David Morrissey (Doctor Who), who will apparently have a 'longterm arc storyline' according to Mazzara: How soon before we meet the Governor? He makes a surprising appearance. I don't want to give anything away as to the exact episode, but the audience will certainly be ready for his appearance -- and they won't have to wait too long. The Rise of the Governor, the novel last year by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga, made him a somewhat more sympathetic character than he is in the comics. Do you see him as a person who's not necessarily forgivable, but understandable? We do. I haven't read the novel because I didn't want

Guardians of the Galaxy Eyes 2014 Release Date!

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 10:15 AM PDT

Guardians of the Galaxy may be Marvel's mystery movie slated for May 16, 2014

Last August, Marvel Studios announced that an unspecified superhero adventure will hit theaters May 16, 2014. Speculation has run rampant about which movie that may be ever since the announcement. An unconfirmed report reveals that Guardians of the Galaxy will be that mystery movie in question.

The news follows our report from earlier this week that revealed Disney, which owns Marvel and Marvel Studios, has registered numerous trademarks for several tie-in products related to the title.

Another report claims that Marvel will officially announce Guardians of the Galaxy at their Comic-Con panel in Hall H, and that newcomer Nicole Perlman has written a script which was well-received by Marvel executives. The studio is currently on the hunt for a director.

The comic book was created in 1969, and follows a group of aliens who take refuge on Earth, to defend the planet against another alien race known as the Badoom. It is believed the Guardians will join forces with Marvel's The Avengers, and that this adventure will serve as a lead-in for The Avengers 2 in 2015. Thanos, who was revealed in the end-credit scene of Marvel's The Avengers, will be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy.

We also reported earlier this month that Black Panther may also be the mystery movie slotted for May 16, 2014. However, Guardians of the Galaxy appears to be further along in development, and seems to fit in better with Marvel's wide-ranging cinematic universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy is in development .

Fantastic Fest is excited to announce Walt Disney Pictures' Frankenweenie will have its world premiere on September 20 as the opening night film for the 2012 festival, happening September 20-27 in Austin, Texas at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

"Tim Burton stands as a titan of modern genre cinema. To world premiere the feature adaptation of his early beloved short is a huge honor for me personally and for the festival in general," said Fantastic Fest Co-founder & Creative Director Tim League.

From creative genius Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas) comes Frankenweenie, a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life-with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor's fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new "leash on life" can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D. The talented voice cast includes: Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder.

Presented by Disney, Frankenweenie is directed by Tim Burton, produced by Tim Burton and Allison Abbate, from a screenplay by John August, based on an original idea by Tim Burton. Frankenweenie releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.

Amy Winehouse Death: Father Mitch Winehouse Reveals What Really Happened

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

Shaun Curry, AFP

Almost a year ago today, we lost one of the strongest, most original voices in music. Amy Winehouse passed away in July of 2011, and there's still a chasm in the music world that has yet to be filled.

Her father, Mitch Winehouse, has been attempting to deal with the loss as best he can. Over the past year, he has had fingers pointed at him over Winehouse's death; the media, the public and even some people in the music industry believe he's partially accountable for her passing. In response to her untimely death, and as a kind of coping mechanism, Mitch Winehouse has written and published a book, titled Amy: My Daughter.

In it, he explores Amy's life from birth to death, revealing little-known details, such as her uncanny ability to understand complex math, her deep relationship with her grandmother, and her tumultuous love affair with Blake Fielder-Civil. He also seeks to uncover Amy's true life story, rather than have people piece together incorrect factoids from tabloid articles or celebrity gossip.
