We have a photo of this deep impression left in the wet sands of a terrified community. News reports aren't clear at this time what could have left such a mark, but we'll know soon enough when Pacific Rim hits theaters this summer.

BOX OFFICE: OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Closing In On A Worldwide Cume Of $250 Million

Posted: 16 Mar 2013 11:06 AM PDT

Despite facing off against new releases such as The Call and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Oz: The Great And Powerful has managed to hold on to the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend. With some kids out of school this past week, it performed steadily over the past five days, with a current total of $144.9 million (a number which includes $11.4 million on Friday and the projected $42 million for the next two days). It took only six days for The Wizard of Oz prequel to cross $100 million; a result that Disney are very pleased with. "We benefited by the fact that that we were the first big event film which had the halo effect of people talking about it over the weekend and wanting to go see it if they didn't have the chance," said one studio exec. Internationally, the film crossed $100 million

Afghan Whigs, Usher, Palma Violets & More: Every Band I've Seen at SXSW, Part 3

Dan Reilly

There are thousands of artists in Austin for SXSW, and I'll be seeing a lot of them. This year, I decided to challenge myself and write about every band I see, no matter how much of their set I caught, or even if I saw/heard them unintentionally. Most of these "reviews" are pieced together from my illegible notebook scribblings, but that's all I've got.

Enjoy... or something.

Dosh
Any set before 1 p.m. at SXSW can really affect my constitution. Going to the First Avenue party of all Twin Cities acts (you'll remember First Ave. from "Purple Rain" or, if you're my family, my engagement photo) was one of the wisest choices I've made during SXSW. Dosh played a mellow but captivating instrumental set while my wife informed me of his biography: Apparently, his parents were a priest and a nun who fell in love, left the cloth and got married. He's one of those guys who you can just tell works on an enlightened level, at least musically.

Follow along daily as Spinner Editor Sarah takes on SXSW for the very first time.

Day Three: "Friday is when the weekend people come," a person snidely said to me at a show Thursday night. While I wasn't exactly sure what that meant, it didn't sound great, so expectations for my third day at SXSW were pretty low. Boy, did I have a surprise coming to me.

Buddy Holly music scholarship awarded at SXSW 2013PA

Buddy Holly would have dedicated part of his life to helping young musicians if he hadn't perished in a plane crash at age 22 in 1959, according to his widow Maria Elena, and that's what a new prize and scholarship launched by The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation intend to do.

A $5,000 yearly scholarship at the University of North Texas in Denton will enable a promising music student to follow in Holly's footsteps, while the "Learning the Game" prize will be awarded each year at the South by Southwest Music Festival to "the preeminent unsigned band or artist at SXSW who best reflects those qualities that set Buddy apart, including songwriting, performance and production."

The Whistleblower. The Canadian film industry doesn't produce an abundance of quality films it's true. However, The Whistleblower is an important, engaging and very well made movie that everyone should see. It was sorely overlooked upon release. On Netflix.
