No Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics Posted: 22 May 2012 10:34 AM PDT Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American rights to Pablo Larraín's Cannes Directors' Fortnight sensation, No from financier Participant Media in association with Funny Balloons and Fabula. No stars Gael García Bernal (Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries), Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers, Marcial Tagle, Néstor Cantillana, Jaime Vadell and Pascal Montero. The film is one of the best received films in Cannes with raves from critics following the first screening in Director's Fortnight. Directed by Pablo Larraín (Post Mortem, Tony Manero) from a screenplay by Pedro Peirano (The Maid), No is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín and Daniel Dreifuss and executive produced by Participant's Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King. Based on a true story, when Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, facing international pressure, calls for a referendum on his presidency in 1988, opposition leaders persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. With scant resources and constant scrutiny by the despot's watchmen, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and free their country from oppression. "This movie is a masterfully engaging and energetic drama about politics and power, a tonic for the brain that is also a major entertainment. No establishes Pablo Larraín as a major international director and Gael García Bernal gives his finest performance. We are also delighted to be back in business with our friends at Participant," stated Sony Pictures Classics. "Pablo, Gael and the team made a brave, inspiring film, and we are grateful to the audiences at Cannes for embracing it so warmly," said Participant Media CEO Jim Berk, "Sony Pictures Classics is the perfect partner to introduce this film to American audiences." Jeffrey D. Ivers and Jonathan King of Participant Media negotiated the deal with SPC. No comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Gael García Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Luis Gnecco, Antonia Zegers, Marcial Tagle, Jaime Vadell. The film is directed by Pablo Larraín. |

I can't find an answer about a question I have about the movie Drive. Posted: 22 May 2012 10:20 AM PDT The copy I have has a smooth sounding soundtrack with no skipping/sudden stop and go. The movie part is very jerky and looks like it is skipping. I read about the new way they did the cinematography in the movie and groundbreaking this and that, but I don't think this is what they meant. When you saw the movie, was the movement and filming smooth flowing? If it is meant to be this jerky, I don't think I can sit through it. [link] [5 comments] |

A Final Round-Up Of This Year's Kapow! Comic Convention Posted: 22 May 2012 11:11 AM PDT During the weekend, I was lucky enough to see brand new footage from Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Total Recall and The Amazing Spider-Man. Being able to attend the first ever Cup O' Joe panel was a real treat, as was the one for the Avengers Vs. X-Men event. Not only were they interesting and generally extremely enjoyable, but a damn good laugh. For example, Joe Quesada's tale of a fan submission that was drawn in crayon and featured the Silver Surfer vs. Jesus Christ and had appearances from Planet of the Apes characters. Not to mention Mark Millar's recollection of a comic he wrote about Aunt May's first sexual experience and a free one which saw Peter Parker accosted by a paedophile. The Nick Frost panel was hilarious. Looking back over his career and future plans, he kept the audience entertained with some hilarious stories and wisecracks. During the 45 minute |

Beatles' 'Backwards' Abbey Road Photo Fetches Thousands at Auction Posted: 22 May 2012 01:45 PM PDT Filed under: News A photograph of the Beatles walking "backwards" across the Abbey Road pedestrian crosswalk has just sold for £16,000 (about $25,000 U.S.) at auction. The photo shown above was not used for the band's Abbey Road album cover and was therefore unseen by many until now. Only six shots of the rockers were taken on that sunny London day in 1969 when the late Iain Macmillan was given 10 minutes to photograph the band. Aside from the direction the Beatles are walking, the most notable difference is that Paul McCartney is waering sandles instead of going barefoot, like he did in the picture chosen for the cover. Poppy Walker from Bloomsbury Auctions tells Spinner that after a frenzied bidding session this afternoon, an unnamed winner claimed the photo for £7,000 above asking price. |
