Ridley Scott Wants Harrison Ford To Appear In BLADE RUNNER Sequel Posted: 27 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT Recently, news broke that Hampton Fancher (who wrote the script for the original Blade Runner) will return to write another installment. It appears that he and director Riddley Scott have agreed that the movie should be a sequel, instead of a rumored prequel. The director confirmed this info in a recent interview with The Independent. Fancher may not have begun writing a script yet, but it sounds like he and Scott know which direction the story should go. Scott also says that he would like Harrison Ford (who played Deckard in the first movie) to appear in the sequel, but he won't be the main focus. "I don't think it'll be Harrison [starring]. But I've got to have him in it somewhere. That'd be amusing," Scott said. Recently, Scott revealed that the protagonist of the new film will be a female. Riddley Scott is currently promoting Prometheus, and he will begin |

"Shame" is an interesting but not great film Posted: 27 May 2012 07:48 AM PDT Finally saw Shame (2011) after hearing people rave about it for some time. Lots of folks seemed upset that it was passed over for Oscar consideration last year. It is an interesting but not great film and I'm not surprised it didn't do better during the awards season. Interesting pieces: The camera work, production, lighting, is all hugely engrossing. The film LOOKS gorgeous. Some of the long takes were really impressive. The acting is also top-notch. Fassbender and Mulligan are always believable in the moment and compulsively watchable. The IDEA of the film is also really great, too: an unflinching look at the life of a sex addict, warts and all. There's also many details that the film gets right: The wake of porned-up computers and materials left behind the sex addict, the lack of interest in others, the inability to manage one's time, the visiting prostitutes and even a visit to a gay bathhouse to satiate the sexual urges. This all rang very true. The not-great: Fassbender's character does not make sense and the story itself is muddled and meandering. Fassbender's character, we are led to believe, leads a cloistered existence where he compulsively views porn, shows up late for work, masturbates, and hires hookers. This all makes sense. But we're also meant to believe he is a masterful pickup artist, endlessly confident with women, and a neat-freak. I found this combination hard to buy in the extreme. If he's spending all his time jerking off, watching porn, and nailing hookers, the guy's apartment would be a wreck and he'd be terrible with women because he'd have never spent the time learning how to pick them up. It beggared belief that he was organized, endlessly attractive to women AND hopelessly addicted to pornography. The story also doesn't add up to more than the sum of its parts. The intro sequence is incredible in dramatizing a subway seduction (a seduction which later seems confusing given how hooked he is on porn). The montage where he hires hookers and goes to the gay bath house is really well shot. The dinner conversation with his co-worker does a nice job of showing how boring life can be. It's neat seeing Fassbender run uninterrupted. But because his character is so unbelievable, I found myself unable to really care about what was happening on screen as the film moved along. False notes: There's also quite a bit that just jarred me out of the film completely.
So I found it very very interesting as a film, but not great. The main problem is the film choosing to combine two strains of sex addict into an unbelievable whole. There are compulsive pick up artists who have beautifully constructed lives and lots of one-night stands with strange women. And there are porn addicts who masturbate at work, have porn on all their computers, and are unable to do anything but think about getting their next dopamine hit. But these are two different people. Combining them into one character was something I just couldn't buy, and so I could never figure out why his character was doing the things he was doing. What'd everyone else think?
