Posted: 26 May 2012 08:21 AM PDT My daughter watches "My Neighbour Totoro" incessantly, so I've seen it heaps of times in bits and pieces, and straight through a few times. The basic plot is that the young Mei and her older sister Satsuki move to a new house in the country with their Dad, while their mother is in hospital with some illness. Mei meets this large creature "Totoro" (and small friends) in the bush, falls asleep, and when she wakes up and tries to show Satsuki and her Dad, she can't find any proof. Later, Satsuki and Mei are waiting for the bus and both girls see Totoro. They get a telegram that their Mum has gotten worse. Satsuki telephones the Dad who's at work, and who goes from there to the hospital. Meanwhile Mei tries to walk to the hospital, gets lost, and is found by Satsuki who had enlisted the help of Totoro and a magic cat bus. They watch from outside the hospital as their parents discuss how the Mum's health is actually fine, and it was a false alarm. The parents find a piece of corn with the kids' writing on it, and sense the kids were nearby. The end. One way to look at this movie is that it's set in a mystical world, where the magical creatures exist, but only the kids can see them. The events you see are therefore what actually happened... The other alternative is that it's the real world, and all the magical stuff is just going on in the kid's imaginations. One reason I think it might be the kids' imagination is that in the scene at the bus-stop, you see a frog wander up to the kids just before Totoro appears, and then croak after Totoro disappears. It seems like it's showing the kids are imagining the frog is Totoro. The main reason for my question is that if it really is all in the kids imagination, then the final part of the movie takes on a different meaning. The kids are worried about their Mum being sick, and possibly having taken a bad turn. If Totoro isn't real, and they're imagining hearing that their Mum is fine, then the ending of the movie is actually sad, and shows that the kids made up Totoro so that they can live in denial that their Mum is actually dying, and probably dead by the end of the movie. Am I reading too much into it? Not enough? I'd be really interested to hear if Miyazaki ever commented on any meaning behind the movie. [link] [5 comments] |
