Zola Jesus Feeling 'Overwhelmed' With Ideas for New Material

Earlier this month, Nika Roza Danilova, better known as goth-pop enchantress Zola Jesus, played natural history museums in New York City and Los Angeles. This week, she does SXSW, and later this month, she heads to Europe for a tour that runs through the end of April.

All the travel has kept her out of the studio, and 2012 could mark the first year since 2009 -- when the Wisconsin-raised drama queen dropped her debut, 'The Spoils' -- that she hasn't released new material.

"I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed with ideas," Zola tells Spinner. "It's been getting a little stressful knowing I still have so much touring to do when I feel my ideas are starting to fill me up."

She's not talking about words or music, per se, but something more abstract and ethereal -- a multimedia cloud of inspiration she somehow draws from and turns into her frosty synth-pop epics.

J.Lo Dishes on Younger Beau Casper Smart, Mgr. Benny Medina Weighs In

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 10:56 AM PDT

Hollywood superstar Jennifer Lopez is red-hot on the cover of Vogue's April issue, its first digital edition, and gushed about her latest romance with 24-year-old backup dancer Casper Smart, saying, "He's adorable. He's a good egg. I don't want to talk about it too much. It's my private thing."

Lopez's longtime manager, Benny Medina, expressed his thoughts on J.Lo's love history, saying, "She's not oblivious to her own reality right now, as in, 'Damn, I'm 42 with a 24-year-old.' She was just like, 'It's not even the age, Benny. It's that I just came out of a relationship where I felt like I was kind of not getting what I needed. And I'm open! So somebody who steps in right now and is actually touching me in a way.' It's very fertile ground."

jennifer-lopez-reddress.jpg

Medina pointed out, "The thing that I always sort of wished is that she would give herself time to just naturally meet someone, instead of having obsessive guys pursue her," said Medina. He has seen Lopez through her previous relationships, including Ojani Noa, Diddy, Chris Judd, Ben Affleck and Marc Anthony.

Benny continued, "The ease with which that obsession becomes a relationship I think sometimes works against her ability to have a real meaningful relationship."

Lopez wore a ring on her finger that says, "I love me," and explained, "That may sound conceited, but it's not. If you don't love yourself, you can't love anybody else. And I think as women, we really forget that. All we want is to feel happy, to feel secure, to feel understood. But you can't look for somebody else to do that for you."

Being Flynn is the new dramatic feature from Academy Award-nominated writer/director Paul Weitz (About a Boy). Adapted from Nick Flynn's 2004 memoir Another Bulls-t Night in Suck City, the movie explores bonds both unbreakable and fragile between parent and child.

Nick Flynn (portrayed in the film by Paul Dano of Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood) is a young writer seeking to define himself. He misses his late mother, Jody (four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore), and her loving nature. But his father, Jonathan, is not even a memory, as Nick has not seen the man in 18 years.

Jonathan Flynn (two-time Academy Award winner Robert De Niro) has long defined himself as a great writer, "a master storyteller." After abandoning his wife and child, Jonathan scrapes through life on his own terms, and ends up serving time in prison for cashing forged checks. After prison, he drives a cab for a number of years, but with his drinking and eccentricities now accelerating, he loses his job. Despite the occasional grandiose letter to his son, he has remained absent from Nick's life.

Suddenly facing eviction from his apartment, Jonathan impulsively reaches out to Nick and the two come face-to-face. The older man is eloquent and formidable; overwhelmed, Nick nonetheless prepares to integrate his father into his own life. But, as quickly as he materialized, Jonathan flits away again.

Moving on, Nick takes a job at a homeless shelter, where he learns from Captain (Wes Studi) and Joy (Lili Taylor) how to relate to the guests who arrive night after night. Seeing the homeless - some permanently, some temporarily so - and hearing their stories, Nick finds purpose in his own life and work. He also sustains a romance with a co-worker, Denise (Olivia Thirlby). Then one night, Jonathan arrives, seeking a bed, and Nick's senses of self and compassion falter. To give the two of them a shot at a real future, Nick will have to decide whom to seek redemption for first.

Evocatively told, ruefully funny, and moving in its depiction of the ties that bind, Being Flynn tells a story that reveals universal truths.

Being Flynn was released March 2nd, 2012 and stars Robert De Niro, Paul Dano, Julianne Moore, Olivia Thirlby, Eddie Rouse, Steve Cirbus, Lili Taylor, Victor Rasuk. The film is directed by Paul Weitz.

The Mortal Instruments Adds Lily Collins as Clary Fray

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 10:15 AM PDT

Lily Collins will play Clary Fray in The Mortal Instruments

Putting to rest weeks of rampant speculation about director and cast, Constantin Film and Unique Features announced today that Harald Zwart will direct actress Lily Collins in the hotly anticipated film adaptation of Cassandra Clare's #1 best-selling book series The Mortal Instruments.

In the series' first book "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones", set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Lily Collins, star of the upcoming Mirror Mirror, will play the lead role of Clary. Principal photography is expected to begin August 15 in Toronto. Harald Zwart, whose recent film The Karate Kid grossed over $350 million worldwide, will direct from a screenplay by Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King, with Robert Kulzer producing for Constantin Film and Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne producing for Unique Features. Martin Moszkowicz, Constantin Film's head of Film & TV, is executive producing.

Fans and the filmmakers agree: "Lily Collins is the perfect Clary," says producer Robert Kulzer. "Harald Zwart really understands the visuals and heart of The Mortal Instruments. That was crucial to us. Of course, having Cassandra Clare's support throughout and collaborating with her on this project has been especially rewarding."

Lily Collins is repped by CAA. Harald Zwart is repped by ICM. Cassandra Clare is repped by The Gotham Group, which also reps Jessica Postigo. Both Postigo and I. Marlene King are repped by Gersh.

The Mortal Instruments comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower. The film is directed by Harald Zwart.

SXSW 2012: Temper Trap, Kaiser Chiefs, Girls & More Invade Spinner Showcase

Spinner isn't just covering shows at the South by Southwest Music Festival, we're presenting them as well, with Milo Greene, Dry the River, Girls, Kaiser Chiefs and the Temper Trap rocking SXSW Thursday night at Stubb's, one of the biggest clubs in Austin.

After impressive opening sets from Milo and Dry the River, the casually dressed Girls took the stage at 10PM. Lead singer Christopher Owens had an acoustic guitar while Chet White (the band's other official member and producer) played bass and the rest of the lineup was filled with electric guitar, drums, keyboards and a female backing singer.

There was a bit of a rootsy edge through the first three songs before Owens strapped on an electric guitar and upped the ante for the rest of the set, nowhere more so than on an extended version of the dynamic 'Honey Bunny,' which shifted moods and tempos. The large crowd was on side with Girls and the amount of dancing seemed to jump a bit when the keyboards were kicked up to a higher level.
