Akira Would Have Made Kaneda and Tetsuo Brothers Says Toby Kebbell

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 08:44 AM PDT

Warner Bros.' live-action Akira remake would have made Kaneda and Tetsuo brothers

Even though production was shut down in January, more information keeps coming in about Warner Bros.' proposed Akira remake. On the heels of last week's storyboards, today Toby Kebbell shed some more light on this live-action manga remake. The actor was one of the top contenders to play Tetsuo, but now that the project has been shelved, he revealed the studio wanted to make Kaneda and Tetsuo brothers.

"I was desperate to play Tetsuo, but Tetsuo in the comic and annual form. He's brilliant in the anime, but if you know anything about the comics, they cut so much of the story out. You care about him, because it's brilliantly done, but you don't really care about Kaneda, who isn't. The other thing they wanted to do was make [Tetsuo and Kaneda] brothers. I was like, 'The point is that Tetsuo can't comprehend how someone who isn't his brother could love him so much - and that's where his wrath and his rage come from. Do you not see that? Why have you made them brothers? What the fuck are you doing?'"

He also pitched the studio a take on the project, dividing the six annuals into three movies, although Warner Bros. didn't quite agree with that prospect.

"I'm probably never going to get an opportunity again to do [Akira]. They were like, 'This is going to be a big franchise!' So I said, 'Then in that case, understand that I've read the comics, and I've read the comics that got turned into the annuals, and then the annuals that got turned into the one-off anime. So if you really want to do it, then why don't you look at the six comics and just put two into each film?' That way my character, Tetsuo, is not the lead. He's not the second lead, and he's not the third or the fourth lead, because there are eight major characters there. You've got great young actors, and you could get them in there. That's the way to do it if you want to do sequels. They were like, 'Welllll...' So I told them, 'Then this is a remake [of the animated movie], and I don't want to do a live-action remake of the cartoon, because [the cartoon] is perfect and you're not going to do it dark enough - so therefore, I don't want to do it.'"

Akira was shut down so the studio could bring the $90 million budget down to a more manageable figure. There hasn't been any movement on this project since January, and it isn't clear if this will ever get off the ground.

Akira comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

Sir Ridley Scott Discusses The 3D Effects In PROMETHEUS

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 10:17 AM PDT

More often that not, 3D conversions are pretty bad. That's more than likely why many fans breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing that Sir Ridley Scott would be shooting Prometheus in 3D (meaning we end up with a film which looks more like Avatar rather than Clash of the Titans). Talking to Total Film recently, the director had this to say about shooting in 3D and just how immersive an experience it will be for the audience. "I'm kind of naturally visual anyway, that's where I come from. And you're working off superb 3D screens, which are on the floor, and are really big. It was just wonderful. I was shooting on 3D, then seeing it on the floor. It was easy, I must say. You only want to push it so far, before it becomes arrows popping out of the screen and stabbing you in the eye. You use

What are some other instances of fans overreacting about the ethnicity of a character in a movie adaptation (ala Rue in the Hunger Games)?

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 10:05 AM PDT

Most of you have probably heard about the stream of racist Twitter comments regarding the casting of a young, black actress as Rue in the Hunger Games movie. While it probably took quite a few people by surprise when they saw that Rue was being depicted as a black character on-screen, the tweets in question were just blatantly racist overreactions to the casting.

I'm sure this has happened before, but I can't think of any examples. Can you all help me think of other times when a character's ethnicity has been interpreted in a film adaptation in such a way that it causes a vocal outrage among fans?

I find this phenomenon interesting for a couple of reasons. A) It reveals a lot about how some people evaluate race and make assumptions with respect to ethnicity, and B) it demonstrates how we imagine characters in text that are otherwise unspecified with it comes to ethnicity to fit into our own, familiar world-view. For example, I'm a white male, and I pictured every single character in the Hunger Games to be white or tan without even realizing it. Since no characters were ever specifically described as being otherwise (dark does not equal black), that's just how my mind filled in the blanks.

Protesters Mock Donald Trump with 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and Puppetry

A group of Scottish protesters posted a video yesterday using Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a spoof against billionaire Donald Trump and a planned golf course development in the country. And it was done with Queen guitarist Brian May's blessing.

According to the Scotsman, May gave his approval after people from the Tripping Up Trump campaign approached him last year. The campaign is bringing attention to Trump's plan to build a golf resort on the Aberdeenshire coast.

"I will do what I can to bring it a little more out in the open," May said. "I'm happy to secure you permission to try this yourself."

A nearly seven-minute video titled "Donald Trump Does Bohemian Rhapsody" opens with a Star Wars-like introduction. "This is a story of destruction and greed, a story of lies and treachery, of how one man has used power and money to diminish the TRUTH," the caption reads. "Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Donald Trump sings a song of relentless determination and unparalleled ego in his battle for the 'The Great Dunes of Scotland.'"

Ninja Turtles Title Confirmed by Michael Bay

Ninja Turtles confirmed as title of Michael Bay's TMNT reboot

It's official. Ninja Turtles is the title of the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake. Fan outcry over the suspected title change this past weekend has brought producer Michael Bay back to his official forums, once again defending the decision and standing by his director Jonathan Liebesman (who brings us this weekend's Wrath of the Titans; of which the verdict is still out).

Here is Michael Bay's latest statement on Ninja Turtles.

Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE'S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.
