'The Hunger Games' Scores $155 Million in the Box Office Arena

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 09:13 AM PDT

The smash hit "The Hunger Games" isn't starving for money.

The film -- starring Jennifer Lawrence as a girl forced to fight an annual event which pits teenagers against one another in a battle to the death -- grossed a historic $155 million in its opening-weekend debut, says studio estimates.

The Friday-Sunday take is the third biggest in Hollywood history, behind only the $169.2-million opening for the final "Harry Potter" installment and the $158.4-million launch of "The Dark Knight." That means "The Hunger Games" also grossed more on its opening weekend than any other non-sequel.

Rock It Promo

The 12th annual SiriusXM Indie Awards marked the end of another year of Canadian Music Week (CMW) in Toronto last night. Saskatoon's Sheepdogs emerged as the big winners of the night, picking up four awards -- Group of the Year, Favourite Single of the Year (for "I Don't Know"), Favourite Live Artist and Favourite Rock Artist -- but the real surprise was their performance during the ceremony, which featured special guest Paul Rodgers.

The legendary Free and Bad Company frontman, who was in town for a CMW conference, joined the Sheepdogs at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel for three songs: "I'll Be Creepin,'" "I'm a Mover" and the classic "All Right Now".

"This has been a dream of ours," Sheepdogs singer Ewan Currie told the audience. Rodgers returned the compliment, exclaiming, "Man! These guys rock!"

EXCLUSIVE: Producer Gale Anne Hurd Talks The Walking Dead Season 2 Finale And The Pacing Of Season 3

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 08:31 AM PDT

Recently, I had the chance to speak to producer Gale Anne Hurd as we did a light retrospective on her career. Most people these days, probably know her best for The Walking Dead but her success story goes much farther back to The Terminator, Aliens, Tremors, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and even a few comic book movies such as The Incredible Hulk and The Punisher. In looking at her career, we talked about her exposure to comics at an early age [she's a Marvel girl], her start under the legendary Roger Corman and I even had a little fun asking her about who would direct and star in a Gale Anne Hurd Wonder Woman movie. We also spoke about her production company, Valhalla Entertainment and the plethora of projects they currently have in development. The majority of the interview is still in the editing bay but

Jennifer Lawrence was a great choice to play Katniss

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 08:29 AM PDT

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't think she's attractive (at least not Hollywood actress level attractive) which contributes to what I think was a marvelous choice for Katniss. Personally, I think she was the perfect choice and is near exactly how I pictured Katniss as I read the books--not gorgeous, but physically fit and semi-attractive. Just my opinion-perhaps most people consider her gorgeous. Nonetheless, this is an excellent example of how to do the book-to-movie translation. EDIT: Oh damn! I stand corrected, courtesy of DanielOnFilm.
