Ray Collins, singer and co-founder of the Mothers of Invention, has died at the age of 74.

According to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin [via Billboard] Collins was admitted to Pomona Valley Hospital in Claremont, Calif. on Dec. 18 after suffering a massive heart attack. Sadly, doctors took him off life support on Saturday, Dec. 22.

Collins started his musical career playing in doo-wop bands, and hired the mustachioed Frank Zappa to play guitar in his band the Soul Giants in 1964. In a short while, the band formed into Mothers of Invention. By 1966, they had signed with Verve records and released the avant-garde full-length Freak Out!.

Favorite CBM moments in 2012

Breaking the Bat - TDKR This moment was one of the most awaited sequence for every comic book fan. If Bane is going to break the Bat or not something everyone was talking around specially. Although this scene was underwhelming, Bane lifts Batman and goes for the backbreaker in the film. It just happened and I felt like it was done just for the sake of it. Opening scene in Dredd 3-D Dredd was surprise of the year. It was rated R like its comic book version and it was worth it. The scene opens and we get the glimpse of Mega city with criminals being skinned off and being tortured in different ways. The opening scene gives you an idea how violent this movie is going to be. Thor vs Hulk – The Avengers Thor vs Hulk is something every comic book fan talks about. No one expected that Thor will try to stop

REVIEW/EDITORIAL: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Disappointment

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 03:04 PM PST

I'd like to preface this article by saying that I am a die-hard fan of everything Lord of the Rings, from Peter Jackson's 'original trilogy' (as we'll probably have to start calling it now, I guess?) to the extended editions which I own, have seen multiple times, and much prefer over the theatrical versions, and of course J.R.R. Tolkien's books which I have also read several times except for the Silmarillion (only read it once...hey can you blame me??). As a result of all this, I knew how different The Hobbit would be from The Lord of the Rings tonally, and I adjusted my expectations accordingly. I was still optimistic that, although I wasn't a huge fan of the decision to split this into three movies, the first movie would be thoroughly enjoyable, if not brilliant. I'm in the camp that the Fellowship of the Ring was the absolute best movie

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield could've opted for a simple cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man," David Bowie's "Space Oddity" or even Nazareth's "This Flight Tonight, but instead the first song ever recorded from the International Space Station was an original.

As posted on YouTube on Christmas Eve, Hadfield recorded "Jewel in the Night" from the Space Station.

"'Jewel In The Night,' first recording from Space Station, ready?" Hadfield says before starting the folksy, singer-songwriter tune.

New PACIFIC RIM Still Featuring Idris Elba And Rinko Kikuchi

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 09:14 AM PST

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. Pacific Rim is set to hit theaters July 12th, 2013. COMICS: Wally West To Make His DCnU Debut After The New Year?

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 09:18 AM PST

Barry Allen has been set up as The Flash in DC's new 52 relaunch. As popular as the silver age Flash has been people have been asking, where is Wally West? DC has been pretty tight lipped about when or if they will be bringing West into the fold. Last we had heard back in October, current Flash writers Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato had a planed on bringing Wally in to the DCnU with Manapul saying, "The pitch is on Dan [DiDio's] desk". However when CBR contacted DC they said they had no plans to develop the character. Well that might all be changing based on a simple Facebook post from Dan Didio, DC's Senior VP and Executive Editor. Via The Inside Pulse: Merry Christmas to Everyone! Even you Wally. maybe I'll see you in the New Year. While obviously this doesn't mean we will definitely see West, it is more hope than fans

Seth Gabel Discusses Playing 'The Count' In ARROW

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 08:50 AM PST

Speaking with Collider while promoting his new movie Allegiance, Seth Gabel (Fringe) discusses his role as the villain 'The Count' in an early 2013 episode of The CW's Arrow. Based on the character Count Vertigo, this incarnation of the DC Comics character is very different from the comic version. "I play The Count, who's based on Count Vertigo of the comic book series. Instead of having superpowers, the powers are manifested in a drug called Vertigo, that I sell on the street. I'm essentially this street thug/drug kingpin, taking over the streets of Starling City. The way I justified being a super-villain, if you will, is that the character cares so much about money and power that he's willing to do whatever it takes to acquire those things. In being totally consumed by money and power, I can completely ignore any questionable ethics, along that process, and just completely throw myself
