M for Montreal: How La Belle Ville Survived 'Next Seattle' Status to Maintain its Music Scene's Fire

'Yamantaka // Sonic Titan M for MontrealMaude Perrin

In the early- to mid-2000s, propelled by the global successes of Arcade Fire, The Dears, Stars and The Stills, Montreal became considered among the world's most important music metropolises. It remains one today, in spite of those initial declarations that the Quebec city was yet another "Next Seattle," the music scene equivalent of the Madden Curse.

Proclamations of this sort regarding Montreal's scene were as ubiquitous as they were subtly damning, and most of the writers who bestowed such titles weren't based in Montreal.

The most well-known article of this strain was written by Spin's Rodrigo Perez in 2005; it sought to put Montreal on the map as "The Next Big Scene." This, despite the fact that Montreal had already been musically relevant for years (and on the map since, oh, 1642). People in Montreal still talk about that article, and sneer when they note that the article's illustration of St. Laurent Boulevard placed bars like Biftek and Le Pistol where they weren't located, or how Perez made the audacious claim that the Montreal scene as he saw it was birthed by the "No" vote in Quebec's 1995 sovereignty referendum.

Syfy brings 2012 to a close with a Star Trek movie marathon and the Doctor Who spin-off K-9

Syfy will close out 2012 with a holiday programming festival featuring an End of the World movie marathon - in case the Mayan apocalyptic prediction proves false - along with a Star Trek film extravaganza, the Doctor Who spinoff K-9 and, of course, the annual Twilight Zone New Year's Eve journey into the Fifth Dimension.

The holiday festivities kick off on Thursday, December 20 at 8 PM with the End of the World festival, concluding Friday, December 21 at 3 AM, highlighted by the Thursday night specials Countdown to Doomsday (12 AM) and 2012: Startling New Secrets (2 AM).

The continuing adventures of the Starship Enterprise journeys from 10:30 AM to 2 AM on Saturday, December 22, and 11 AM to 11:30 PM on Sunday, December 23.

Making its U.S. television premiere, K-9, a comedy/adventure series focusing on the adventures of the robot dog K-9 from the iconic series Doctor Who, blending computer animation and live action, airs on Christmas Day Tuesday, December 25 from 10 AM to 11 PM, with a marathon of all episodes in the series.

The Twilight Zone annual New Year's holiday marathon ushers in 2013 Monday, December 31 from 8 AM to 4:30 AM, and on Tuesday, January 1 from 6 AM to 5 AM.

G.I. Joe Retaliation 3D International Poster

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 09:55 AM PST

G.I. Joe Retaliation was barging full-steam towards its summer 2012 release date when Paramount Pictures pulled the plug, deciding that this anticipated sequel would fare better in 3D. At the time, plenty of posters and photos had already been released, and the toys had even found their way into a few stores. Now, with a March release date looming, Paramount has to kick start it's promotional run all over-again. And it doesn't look much different than the first time around, with the film being rebranded as G.I. Joe Retaliation 3D, and Channing Tatum taking a more prominent role at the forefront of the action. We'll forgive you if you get a sense of d&#233j&#224 vu looking at this latest international one-sheet, or if you were under the impression that this sequel came and went without much fanfare.

G.I. Joe Retaliation 3D comes to theaters March 29th, 2013 and stars Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Joseph Mazzello, Ray Park, Walton Goggins. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu.

Television producer Gavin Polone is not keeping quiet about his feelings towards new CNN President Jeff Zucker.

"I have specific reasons to dislike the guy, and his ignominious de-jobbing at the end of a bad run of failure at NBCUniversal was a happy event for me," Polone writes in an open letter featured in The Hollywood Reporter. "Given that, you can guess how displeased I was upon hearing that my nemesis had been chosen to lead CNN."

Mark Millar Auctioning Off A Character's Name In JUPITER'S CHILDREN For A Good Cause

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 09:06 AM PST

As he did with the majority of his past creator owned characters, Mark Millar is offering one lucky fan the opportunity to have their name featured in next April's Jupiter's Children. The series has been described by the writer as being as epic as Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings and tells the story of a group of superheroes who received their powers under mysterious circumstances in the 1920's and their children who fail to live up to their legacy. The money raised from the auction will be donated to Millar's old school and will pay for the kids who currently go there to see a theatre show this Christmas. "It's something I'd like to do every year and expand into other schemes in the community with a few other ideas I have," Millar says. "Some of the kids had never been to the city before and when I

Zombies are serious business.

Just ask the woman who was shot (non-fatally) by her boyfriend after they got in a fierce argument over the probability of a real-life zombie apocalypse, a conversation sparked by AMC's hit drama The Walking Dead. She thinks it's pure fantasy, but he thinks a "military mishap" could make the ravenous undead a reality. And so he shot her (accidentally, he claims). Jeez, overreact much?

Ender's Game Photo Reveals Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 09:10 AM PST

Ender's Game, an adaptation of Orson Scott Card's popular 1985 novel, is coming to theaters this November, starring Asa Butterfield as the title character Ender and Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff. We have the first photo of the film, courtesy of EW.

Ender's Game Photo

Ender's Game revolves around a futuristic Battle School for teens that is set in space. The picture above finds Ender facing off with Graff over blocked emails from home. Director Gavin Hood explains.

"The relationship between [Harrison] and Asa was very close, but he didn't overly befriend him off the set. He helped Asa by allowing that slight sense of intimidation to be there.

The kids have to attend school for at least three hours of class every day, plus do homework, so you can only shoot with someone like Asa for five hours of your day. There was no time for fooling about or not knowing your lines or being unprepared. Asa being prepared meant that we could focus on the scenes, and these are complicated scenes for a young actor."

The recruits in the movie are actually older than they are presented in the book.

"I discussed this at length with Orson . The decision was made very early on to compress the time period into about a year, so that we could have the same actor from beginning to end... We were trying to hit that sweet spot right around 12, which Asa fits in very nicely. When you sit down for two hours, you're just beginning to bond with an actor, and then he changes and suddenly you're bonding with someone who's meant to be the same person, but you know he's a different actor."

Ender's Game comes to theaters November 1st, 2013 and stars Asa Butterfield, Brendan Meyer, Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld, Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy Pinchak. The film is directed by Gavin Hood.

Rihanna 777 Tour Journal: Opening Act Congorock 'Had a Blast' Despite Journalist Complaints

Rihanna's ill-fated 777 tour has been reported about from a variety of angles, scoring less-than-stellar reviews from many of the 250 or so fans and journalists who claimed to have been virtually held captive aboard the singer's Delta 777 plane, whilst she partied and shopped for lingerie.

The perspective of Rihanna's team, her crew and fellow talent on the tour, however, has been kept under wraps. To that end, her opener, Italian electro-house producer Congorock, sent Spinner RPM a detailed journal of his experience, offering a candid, enthusiastic behind-the-scenes recap and photo gallery.

From afterparties with Diddy and Cassie in Paris, to drinking and bonding with the 777 passengers and crew in New York, Congorock's tour diary paints a vastly different portrait of the supposedly disastrous press junket -- although both share a naked Aussie.

The 777 tour with Rihanna has easily been the most intense tour I've ever done since I started DJing. The plan for this world tour looked as exciting as it did terrifying because of the super-tight flight schedules, but the chance to open with my DJ set for such a big act made me feel ready to face anything on this trip.

We all started at the LAX airport, at a gate I've never seen before, probably reserved for VIPs and private jets. I was so scared to miss the first flight that I arrived at the airport way earlier than I was supposed to, only to realize that everyone else was taking it easy on the 10AM meeting time.

Toy Answers How Batman Escaped at the End of TDKR

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 05:43 PM PST

If that didn't happen, even in Christopher Nolan's "realistic" batman universe, it's possible that superman could have just come by and saved batman because, he might need his help for the problem which may lie ahead. It still does not define the rest of the ending but, at least its worth giving a thought?
