Phillip Seymour Hoffman Joins Upstate

Philip Seymour Hoffman to executive produce the HBO series Upstate

Philip Seymour Hoffman is on board to produce the new TV drama Upstate, a project we exclusively broke the news on in January. While Philip Seymour Hoffman will executive produce the new HBO series, it isn't clear if he will star in the project.

The story centers on a prison guard named Roy who lands a new job, relocating his family to a town that has been built around a for-profit prison facility. Robert Glaudini and Brett C. Leonard (Hung) wrote the pilot script. Emily Ziff will also serve as executive producer alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert Glaudini, and Brett C. Leonard.

Philip Seymour Hoffman will reunite with Robert Glaudini once again on this project. Robert Glaudini wrote the stage play for Jack Goes Boating and the screenplay for the movie version, both of which featured Philip Seymour Hoffman as the title character. Philip Seymour Hoffman also made his directorial debut with the movie version of Jack Goes Boating.

We spoke with Robert Glaudini back in January, when he was promoting the Blu-ray and DVD release of Jack Goes Boating. Here's what he had to say about Upstate back then.

"Upstate is the story of the community that develops around a private prison, which is run for profit. In other words, the prison is built and as people work there and as the economy improves in that immediate area, a suburban community develops around this industry. It will not be an upstairs-downstairs story. The main characters are a correctional officer, his wife and his two kids. It will be about how the job impacts his family and other families in the community. We're kind of excited about it. We think it could make a great story."

No production schedule was given for Upstate at this time.

These days, Bob Geldof is better known as a political rabble-rouser, founder of Live Aid
and the father of celebutante Peaches Geldof than he is as the one-time frontman of the Boomtown Rats. But that hasn't curbed his desire to write songs.

The droll, notably profane singer is set to kick off the American release of his first solo album in nearly a decade, 'How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell,' by delivering the keynote speech at SXSW tomorrow (March 17). Spinner spoke to Geldof about losing his 'Captain Grumpy' persona, turning gray and the story behind 'The Great Song of Indifference.'

Christina Aguilera: 'Everything That's Happened to Me, I Thank God'

Singer Christina Aguilera sat down with "Extra's" Terri Seymour to talk about joining the cast of mentors on the new reality competition show, "The Voice."

Christina and Boyfriend Arrested

The show has a slight twist -- the auditions are based purely on the voice, without seeing the potential contestant perform. Aguilera revealed she was drawn in by the concept. "It's so easy to judge people on how they look or walk or talk and this one is specifically about the voice."

Christina Through the Years

Christina also experienced her share of judgments based on her rough start in 2011 with her Super Bowl flub, Grammy stumble, and arrest earlier this month, but the singer says she remains grateful. "All of my experiences in the past year, and everything that's happened to me, I thank God for it."

The singer's 3-year-old son, Max, also joined his mother on "The Voice" set. " He's got a thing for it. He definitely wanted to come to work with mommy."

Other coaches include Maroon 5's Adam Levine, country music artist Blake Sheldon, and Grammy winner Cee Lo Green. Aguilera recalled Cee Lo's flamboyant Grammy outfit and exclaimed, "Oh my God, Cee Lo is amazing!"

The show's creator Mark Burnett chimed in and raved about his new panel of coaches on the show. "I am so blessed and so grateful. On a level of capability they're all very experienced, they're all stars, and all have a ton of fans."

"The Voice" premieres on NBC April 26.
