Shad Feels No Pressure in Going Up Against Drake at Juno Awards

In the course of his short career, Vancouver-based rapper Shad has received an impressive list of industry award nominations. He's twice been shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and received two nominations each at the Much Music Video Awards and the Indie Awards (where he won for Favourite Urban Artist). This weekend, he'll get a second chance to score a Juno when his excellent third album, 'TSOL,' is up for Best Rap Recording.

The Canadian music industry likes to celebrate its artists, but Shad says that the number of annual industry awards celebrations, at times, seems excessive.

"Wow, we have a lot of awards in music," he tells Spinner. "It's always nice when people recognize the work you've done, but really, shouldn't [we] be rewarding nurses or doctors -- people that save lives?"

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Tones Down Sex and Violence for PG-13

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 10:41 AM PDT

Breaking Dawn will tone down sex and violence for PG-13

There is a scene in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 where Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) chews through his pregnant wife's (Kristen Stewart) belly with his sharp vampire teeth to unleash the Hell spawn hiding within. Her spine shattered, he then proceeds to gnash his way through the umbilical cord, which is as strong as Kal-El's hair strand from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. This is but one of far too many graphic, adult themed moments in the two-part series ending climax of this popular young adult series aimed at teenage girls.

While recently promoting Water for Elephants, Robert Pattinson confirmed that he had shot the scene mentioned above, and that it was as gruesome and gnarly as most imaged while reading the book. He assured fans that director Bill Condon was staying slavishly close to the source material, and this would not be a white wash of Stephenie Meyer sexually deviant prose. Which, if true, would solidify a solid R rating for both The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

Today, a Rep for Summit Entertainment, home of the Twilight saga, has come forward to clarify Robert Pattinson's statements. Neither movie is going to be restricted to an audience of 18 years or older.

"Breaking Dawn will be a PG-13. It will not be rated R.""

So, when these two back-to-back sequels arrive in theaters, they will be neutered from an artistic standpoint, but it makes sense. It's a series aimed at young girls. Nothing to get hung up about. Strawberry Fields forever, and all that shit. But the real question begging to be answered is: Will older fans get to see the complete, uncut The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 when this series comes to a close on Blu-ray and DVD? Twilight has just as many adult fans as it does teenagers, and those teenagers are going to grow up quick.

Let's hope Bill Condon reedits this truly weird, sexual experience back into its true form at some point down the line. Its what the fans really want, and it would make a killing on the home video circuit. I am guessing they will save the Uncut Saga for that defining moment when it looks like no more money can be drained from this franchise.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 comes to theaters November 18th, 2011 and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Anna Kendrick, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli. The film is directed by Bill Condon.

Child's Play Remake Finally Moves Forward at MGM

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 10:46 AM PDT

Chucky will return with a new Child's Play remake from MGM

MGM is finally in a position to bring Chucky back to life, with the horror reboot Child's Play heading into production. Child's Play first hit theaters in 1988, spawning the sequels Child's Play 2, Child's Play 3, Bride Of Chucky, and Seed of Chucky.

The remake had been in development for several years, with a script already written by Don Mancini, who also wrote all the previous movies in the Chucky franchise. The hold-up on the remake was apparently due to rights issues by MGM and Universal. MGM has the rights to the original Child's Play, while Universal retained rights to the sequels. Apparently, a deal has been made between the two studios.

Production is said to begin on the remake sometime later this year, with Brad Dourif returning to voice Chucky. This new project is said to be more of a reboot, with a darker tone and less comedic elements (what's more funny than a Cabbage Patch doll trying to kill a kid, though?). However, none of this has been confirmed at this time.

Way back in September 2008, I spoke with writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner about the 20th Anniversay DVD release of Child's Play. Here's what David Kirschner had to say about the remake, which was initially Universal's idea.

"Actually, it was Universal. In our discussions of Don and my producing partner, we thought we would go on to the next film, but Universal said to us that they would love to be able to remake the first. I think all of us looked at each other and said, 'We just don't want to make a frame-for-frame exactly the same picture.' That's when Don went away and began to work and when Don began to lay out where he was going. I don't want to give away too much. I've known Don for 22 years. We're dear friends. I know his humor, I know his mind. I was so shocked with where he was taking us with expectations of the first film and pulling the rug out from under us. It was exciting and really frightening and exhilarating to hear, as opposed to just shooting a frame-for-frame, but really subverting audiences expectations."

Don Mancini also revealed back then that he wanted to get away from the comedy and make this a straight-up horror movie.

"That's really our goal with this next movie, bottom-line, was to make it scary again. After having, I think, rather successfully mined the horror-comedy aspects of this concept over the course of Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, the fans are really telling us that they want it to be scary again. Doing the remake just provides us with a really good opportunity to bring it home, so to speak."

Child's Play comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Brad Dourif.

what is the best 'hacker movie' you've ever seen?

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 09:53 AM PDT

I'm researching cyberpunk and hacker movies.

The Net I find incredibly irritating due to it's over-reliance on sheer coincidence and luck to get Sandra Bullock out of every jam.

Hackers is completely silly, a caricature.

War-games was pretty cool but hopelessly out of date (though ludicrous)

I think the best one yet may be "3 Days of the Condor", not sure if it really qualifies though.

Any great ones I'm missing?

Juno Cup Pits Billy Talent, Kathleen Edwards & Other 'Rockers' Against NHLers

Chris Young, CP

There was plenty of gear at Toronto's Ricoh Coliseum, just not the type usually affiliated with Canadian musicians.

The Juno Cup, an annual celebrity hockey game pitting former National Hockey League players (NHL Greats) against a team of Canadian artists (The Rockers), held its practice Thursday afternoon to prepare for the big game tonight. And for Billy Talent bassist Jon Gallant, it's like a temporary dream coming true.

"For me this is the best part of the Junos," Gallant -- playing for the fifth time -- tells Spinner as teammates from Sloan (Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott), the Sadies (Sean Dean and Mike Belitsky) and Hollerado (Menno Versteeg) skate by. "I always wanted to be a hockey player before anything else when I was a kid, and I'm kind of satisfying that to a degree."

The game -- which has seen the NHL side lose only once -- benefits MusiCounts, Canada's music education charity associated with CARAS, The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Gallant says the charity had a big influence on him growing up.
