Mister Heavenly's Honus Honus Speaks on Michael Cera, Elvis Costello at SXSW

One of the most promising acts at SXSW this year was Mister Heavenly, the indie rock mashup band fronted by Joe "the Plummer" of Modest Mouse on guitar/vocals, Honus Honus of Man Man on keyboards/vocals, Nick Thorburn of the Unicorns on drums, and Hollywood actor Michael Cera on bass.

Although it was Cera's celebrity that drew the crowds, it was the dark undertones of Modest Mouse and deep, soulful rumblings of Honus Honus that brought down the house. Spinner had a chance to sit down with Philly native
Ryan Kattner (aka Honus Honus) backstage at the St. Pat's BAMM.tv Pop Montreal party at Beauty Bar.

Read on as the keyboardist reveals the story behind Mister Heavenly's name, why he hates when people scream "Michael" and his thoughts on Elvis Costello.

How would you describe the band's sound?

UFC Fighter Jon 'Bones' Jones Takes Down a Robber

Posted: 20 Mar 2011 10:41 AM PDT

UFC fighter Jon "Bones" Jones captured a robber at a park in New Jersey hours before his big fight! Jones was meditating near a waterfall with his coaches when they came across a distressed elderly couple who explained a man had just broken into their car and stole items from inside it before taking off running.

Jones, 23, began chasing the assailant through the park for a good distance before the robber tripped and fell. According to Yahoo Sports, Jon recalled, "I'm like 20 yards away and the guy, you could tell he was starting to get winded. He looks back at me, 6-4, and Greg and Wink are behind me and I'm just running. The guy tripped over his own foot and I got so scared because I didn't know what I was going to do when I actually caught up with him. I actually started barking at him!" His coaches held him down while they waited for police to arrive. Jones also tweeted about it and wrote, "I caught him... Coach Jackson finished him... It feels so good to help others. It gives me power and energy." The heroic fighter went on to win his UFC match later on that evening against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the third round.

Awesome New Republic Crashes Ethiopian Restaurant at SXSW

Awesome New Republic SXSW 2011Mark Collins for AOL

Crowds of festival goers swarmed the streets of Austin as SXSW quickly started to stand for "South by South-Wait." But there was shelter in the storm at small venues with good bands and no lines -- such as Karibu Ethiopian restaurant where the sheltered patio offered space for Awesome New Republic (ANR) to play a set for dedicated fans at 4 p.m. on Saturday (March 19) afternoon.

Kicking off with the smash single 'Stay Kids,' ANR immediately drew in the small, but dedicated, crowd. The dueling piano keys provided the percussion for the track that felt full-bodied with only two speakers on a makeshift stage. The band played 'Big Problem' before slowing things down with 'The Endless Field of Mercury.' Deep, enchanting lyrics filled the space and spilled out onto Seventh Street, especially during 'Year of Solitude Pays Off,' a sprawling, dramatic ballad that really takes off at the end with a multitude of layers.

For Spinner's SXSW Road Report we wanted to find a band that wasn't afraid to get down and dirty, and, of course, tell us all about it, which is why we've teamed up with Toronto's Small Sins. No stranger to the madhouse that is Austin mid-March, the enterprising indie rockers are seasoned pros at making the most of the five-day blitz (March 16-20), taking in the sights and sounds and BBQ of SXSW at all hours (and we do mean ALL hours). Stay tuned for faithful updates from keyboardist Kevin Hilliard as he details Small Sins adventures (and misadventures) while in the good ol' Lone Star State this week.

Amanda Shires Showcases a Wealth of Emotions During SXSW Set

While the rest of Austin lurched noisily into the last night of SXSW, Amanda Shires set about quietly breaking hearts Saturday (March 19) during her performance at Creekside in the Hilton Garden Inn.

The Lubbock, Texas, native spent her 40 minutes on stage giving a performance that was often outright devastating, singing in a dusty voice made more so by the fact that the gig was her 14th performance during the festival (though some came playing with Jason Isbell).

Films similar to "Mr. Nobody"?

Posted: 20 Mar 2011 09:05 AM PDT

I just watched the movie "Mr. Nobody" and was blown away. It was exactly what I was looking for: an epic, surreal movei with romance.

Anyone else seen this and, if so, recommend a similar movie?

The Hobbit: Filming Begins!

Posted: 19 Mar 2011 04:27 PM PDT

The shire is built, the Hobbits have arrived, and production of one of the biggest films ever to be made in New Zealand is set to begin tomorrow. After a torrid few weeks at the end of last year when a spat between director Sir Peter Jackson and the New Zealand actors' union threatened to drive the film overseas, filming will now start on The Hobbit – the two-part prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The stoush last year resulted in Prime Minister John Key announcing that the government would make concessions to filmmakers Warner Bros, including a change to labour laws clarifying the status of film workers as contractors. Overseas media have described The Hobbit as possibly the biggest movie franchise ever and Key said last year the amount being spent on the films was "off the scale", even for Hollywood. Sets have again been created at a sheep and beef farm

Death From Above 1979 Reunion Show Ends in Riot at SXSW, Band 'Feel Bad'

A riot broke out early Sunday morning at the "secret" Death From Above 1979 reunion show at SXSW in Austin, as frustrated fans who couldn't gain entry to the extremely limited capacity event stormed the tiny Beauty Bar Backyard venue, knocking down a fence and clashing with police.

"I didn't know the police were beating people," singer-drummer Sebastien Grainger -- who initially encouraged the fence-crashers to come in with a hearty "welcome to the party" -- told Spinner shortly after the set.

"Damn, now I feel bad."

The chaos broke out around 1:30AM CT, nearly twenty minutes into the band's set. As hundreds of fans and onlookers outside the fenced off venue jostled for position, those in the front began to smash against the metal barrier, slamming their fists in time to DFA1979's aggressive rock. Noting the unrest, several security officers lined up inside the barrier hoping to encourage order with their presence.

The Dodos Go Big for AOL Pop-Up Show at SXSW

Joseph Llanes for AOL

The last day of SXSW can be a confusing time for participants, as -- four 24-hours days into it -- everyone is a bit torn and frayed. And yet, it's both the weekend and the grand finale, so you want to go big. The Dodos toed the line between both emotions for their AOL Pop-Up Show on Saturday afternoon (March 19) at a beautiful Methodist Church in downtown Austin, Texas. A stone's throw from city hall, the church proved an inspirational setting -- with My Morning Jacket-worthy natural reverb -- for the final AOL-produced show of SXSW 2011.

Talking to Spinner directly before taking the stage, the band admitted that they felt as haggard as anyone, having performed multiple shows a day, seemingly non-stop, since arriving earlier in the week. Add to that, their latest CD, 'No Color,' was released on Tuesday (March 15). With the finish line in sight, the Dodos performed a free 45-minute set in the church for a few hundred, lucky fans.

Some solo artists get precious about performing songs they originally did as part of a group. Big Boi is not one of them.

The Atlanta rapper, still best known as half of the hip-hop duo OutKast, dropped one OutKast jam after another Saturday afternoon (March 19) when he closed out the Mog day party at Mohawk at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

He front-loaded his set with the best-known tunes, including 'Rosa Parks,' 'So Fresh, So Clean,' 'Ms. Jackson' and 'B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad),' the familiar hooks thudding through the venue as Big Boi recited his fast, oh-so-smooth rhymes with help here and there from a hype man.

Wyclef Jean has reportedly been shot at during a trip to his native Haiti.

The former Fugees member was visiting the country to lend his support to presidential candidate Michael Martelly, during Martelly's preparations for the final round of elections against former First Lady Mirlande Manigat.

A car he was riding in was attacked and shot at as he was driving through the capital of Port-au-Prince, accompanied by friend and fellow artist Busta Rhymes and the record executive Jimmy Rosemond. The three traveled to Haiti to take part in a concert to support Martelly's bid for presidency.
