Joss Whedon Denies Marvel's The Avengers Spider-Man Rumor

Joss Whedon denies The Avengers Spider-Man Rumor

A lot of content from Marvel's The Avengers recent live Twitter chat was overshadowed by the simultaneous release of a teaser from that film's upcoming Super Bowl XLVI TV spot. As we've covered Marvel's The Avengers' The Amazing Spider-Man rumor in some detail, we wanted to make sure we gave you a proper update, as director Joss Whedon did make a statement on this particular aspect of the film.

Of course, Joss Whedon has denied that neither The Amazing Spider-Man nor his alter ego Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) will be showing up at any point during Marvel's The Avengers runtime. Bryan Singer also told us there would be no Wolverine in X-Men: First Class, and we all know how that turned out.

As of now, this is Joss Whedon's official confirmation that Peter Parker never had a trailer set up next to Tony Stark on the set.

"There is no Spider-Man cameo. But the Avengers do turn off the dark!"

He then went onto say that if there were a cameo in the mix, he wouldn't have chosen Spider-Man.

"I'm a fan of the Wasp. She's goofy and stingy."

In related news, it has been confirmed that this Sunday's upcoming Marvel's The Avengers: Super Bowl XLVI TV spot will offer a first look at the alien invaders that this team of superheroes must face down, as hinted at in the teaser released earlier this week.

Marvel's The Avengers comes to theaters May 4th, 2012 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Super Bowl episode 46.1, "Super Bowl XLVI" airs on NBC February 5th, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

Great Scott! Is BACK TO THE FUTURE Coming to Broadway?

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 08:54 AM PST

Says Deadline, "I'm told that Zemeckis is in early talks with his co-writer Bob Gale and the film's composer Alan Silvestri to explore a stage transfer. A stage musical would be an intriguing way to reintroduce a franchise which, over three films, grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide. Zemeckis' ImageMovers would be involved if this goes forward." One would imagine that this is where the Writer's Guild Separation of Rights Clause kicks in, which gives the writers of a movie screenplay the ability to produce a stage version even though a movie studio owns the film rights. Despite this, it isn't hard to believe that "the bobs" would want to work with Universal so that many of the familiar trappings of the film could be incorporated into the stage show.

Jane Goldman To Pen NONPLAYER For WB

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 08:50 AM PST

A while ago we heard that Warner Bros. had acquired the rights to Nate Simpson's comicbook Nonplayer from Image Comics, with a view to setting up a potential tentpole project with producers Roy Lee (The Ring) and David Heyman (the Harry Potter series). Now it seems they have a writer on board to adapt the series, and it's none other than Mrs Jonathan Ross herself, Jane Goldman. She tells The Playlist.. I'm working on a sci-fi project for Warners. It's called Nonplayer, an adaptation of a really wonderful comic that just won the Eisner for Newcomer. It's futuristic, it's incredible. Science fiction is not a genre I'm used to, but it's my favorite. Goldman has quite a bit on her plate now, so her returning to work on the First Class sequel with Mathew Vaughn is by no means a certainty: "That's not certain yet. But I'd like to, and Matthew [Vaughn]

With Leonard Cohen fans poring over his just-released 'Old Ideas' album (which you can stream here), we knew it was just a matter of time before more Cohen covers came in. New York indie darlings Cults were quick on the draw here, too -- though they opted for an older track from the legendary singer-songwriter's expansive catalogue.

The pop-minded duo have revamped Leonard Cohen's 1988 track 'Everybody Knows,' and you can watch them perform it below courtesy of The Guardian. Check out Cults couple Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin tackle the wonderfully cynical song from Cohen's 'I'm Your Man' album, joining the ranks of artists like Rufus Wainwright and Concrete Blonde who've reinterpreted the classic.

Oprah on OWN: 'Harder Than I Thought'

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 10:29 AM PST

"Extra" correspondent AJ Calloway traveled all the way to South Africa to help Oprah Winfrey celebrate the first graduation ceremony of Oprah's Leadership Academy for Girls.

Oprah marveled, "Can you believe it? And not only are 100 percent graduating, 100 percent are also going to college!"

Calloway asked her if she was going to build another academy. The talk show host said, "No, you will not see another... well, maybe you will. Starting from scratch is hard. Whether you're building a network or building a school, starting from scratch is hard."

Speaking of her network, what is the future of OWN? Winfrey explained, "The reason I did OWN was I wanted to continue the platform to speak to people in a way that made them feel inspired. And that's been harder than I thought it would be, but it's also been as exciting as I thought it would be."

Calloway pointed out "Oprah's Next Chapter" is a huge hit. Oprah replied, "Yes, that's nice, a good start. Now I just need 23 more hours a day, but that's a good start. What I know now is you start one show at a time, one night at a time... building your nights instead of trying to do it all at one time.

And Oprah said she's "always looking" for new shows. "Every time I meet somebody now I'm like, 'Do you want a show?' I'm looking for everybody who has great ideas."

Tune in to "Extra" on Thursday for more of our special one-on-one interview with Oprah in South Africa. And check back Friday for more, including a touching tribute from Winfrey's longtime boyfriend, Stedman Graham, and a personal tour of her South African home.

Marion Cotillard's Rust and Bone acquired by Sony Pictures Classics

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all North American, Latin American and Eastern European rights to Jacques Audiard's (A Prophet) Rust and Bone from Hengameh Panahi of Celluloid Dreams. The film recently wrapped production.

The film was co-written by Jacques Audiard and Thomas Bidegain and adapted from the acclaimed book of short stories by Craig Davidson. Just as he did with the prison genre in A Prophet, Jacques Audiard will renew the love story with Rust and Bone, his stirring new film filled with romance and suspense.

Rust and Bone stars Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, Midnight in Paris) and Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead), and is produced by Pascal Caucheteux, who SPC had previously worked with on the features, Of Gods and Men and A Prophet.

"Jacques Audiard is one of Europe's finest directors, and the same goes for producer Pascal Caucheteux. We are thrilled to be working with them, and Hengameh Panahi of Celluloid Dreams, once again," said Sony Pictures Classics.

Rust and Bone comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Bouli Lanners, Céline Sallette, Corinne Masiero. The film is directed by Jacques Audiard.
