Karl Urban Wishes 2000AD A Happy Birthday...As DREDD!

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 10:11 AM PST

Simon Pegg and Karl Urban will reprise their roles as Scotty and Dr McCoy in J.J Abrams' Star Trek sequel, and from the set they send out birthday greetings to 2000AD which turns 35 today. Pegg runs through his favorite strips from the mag and then Urban puts on the "Dredd face" and gives em a "Happy Birthday..creeps". Even if it's not exactly how he will sound as Judge Dredd in the upcoming movie, it's still pretty cool!.. And courtesy of Live For Films here is a look at the cover of the 35th anniversary issue..

What's your favorite out-of-character role by a type-cast actor or actress?

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 07:20 AM PST

There have been some truly awful characters portrayed by actors who were desperate to break the mold of predictability, but there are some really special roles created by actors who seemed to flourish in a different setting or under a talented director. So who shocked you the most with their previously-undiscovered skill? Or what characters stuck with you that you didn't think would?

I always saw Rodney Dangerfield as a bit of a clown. Someone who could make me laugh, to be sure, but someone whose work was mostly escapism that wouldn't really stick with me. That was until I saw Natural Born Killers. The shock of seeing him as a drunk, out-of-work rapist (of his own daughter, no less) put me on edge for days afterward. The way that the laugh track was used over the scene was also a stroke of genius. A normal director's choice of sound over that scene probably would have been dark, synthy music to show Mallory's pain and anguish, but to set that content against the backdrop of a cheesy TV sitcom made it all the more disturbing.

In a completely different vein, Jason Bateman's role in Arrested Development will probably see to it that the rest of his career will be filled with offers to play the nice guy that gets walked over by stronger personalities. We've already seen him play the same role in Extract. But his character in Dodgeball is one of the highlights of the entire movie for me. It's like he was doing his best impression of a stoned snowboarder for half the movie and it was hilarious.

BLEACH Anime Series To End March 27th, Manga Starts It's Final Arc

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 10:10 AM PST

Just yesterday, I had the pleasure of reporting that Warner Bros. has finally decided to begin the process of making a live-action Bleach movie. However, it's with mixed feelings that toady, I report that the anime will air it's final episode in Japan on March 27th. The manga will continue on but it's also been confirmed that Tite Kubo is entering the final arc of the series. Hopefully it will receive the send-off it deserves as both the anime and manga have enjoyed a LONG run atop the best-seller's chart. Most anime fans would agree that the series peaked during the Soul Society arc and has been locked in a meandering waltz ever since; however, Bleach remains profitable and popular and will go out as one of the top 3 anime/manga's alongside Naruto and One Piece. Of course, it's bittersweet that the anime and manga are wrapping up

Video! Was Star Jones 'Ambushed' on 'The View'?

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 11:04 AM PST

The day after correspondent Star Jones visited her old stomping ground at "The View," answering questions about her abrupt departure in 2006, her "Today" show co-panelist, Donny Deutsch, said he felt like she was "ambushed."

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

On Wednesday, "View" host Barbara Walters wasted no time in bringing up Jones' exit from the show, which came as a shock to Walters and the other hosts at the time.

"What had happened was your contract was not renewed.... You surprised us on the air," said Walters.

Jones seemed taken aback that this was the first topic of conversation, but noted, "Everything was ugly," saying that "it was a bad emotional time" for her. "I made the decision that I wanted to go out on my own terms."

Deutsch said Thursday on "Today's Professionals" that the segment was like "watching the mean girls in the seventh-grade cafeteria take on a vulnerable girl."

Jones was appreciative of her colleague's sentiments, gesturing around the studio, "This is family."

CBM Fight Club RULES!!! -NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST. In choosing a winner base your vote on the most iconic interpretation of the character. The comment section is a great place for you to present why you think that character would win the fight. -The fights are first meeting chance encounters - no prep time. -The fights does not need to be deathmatches, incapacitating the other character can be considered a win. -Lopsided matches may occur (which also happens regularly in the comics and movies) but before you write out the "weaker" character try to think of possible ways this character can beat the more "powerful" opponent. Again the comment section will be helpful in this. -Eligible fighters are characters who have both been given life in comics AND movies. THE POLLS WILL RUN FOR A WHOLE MONTH BEFORE THE RESULTS WILL

Famed singer-songwriter and musician Billy Strange passed away Wednesday (Feb. 22) in Nashville at the age of 81, the Tennessean reports (via our counterparts over at The Boot). His cause of death is unknown at this time.

A member of the Musicians Hall of Fame, Strange played with Willie Nelson, Bob Willis, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin, among others. In the 1960s, he was a member of the "Wrecking Crew," a group of Los Angeles-based session musicians who played on albums including the Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' and Nancy Sinatra's 'Boots.' On the latter project, Strange helped songwriter Lee Hazlewood with the musical arrangement for the album's now-classic hit, 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'.' He also teamed with Mac Davis to co-write 'A Little Less Conversation and 'Memories' for Elvis Presley.

SkyFall Becomes First James Bond Adventure Presented in IMAX

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 09:21 AM PST

Skyfall to be 007's first adventure in IMAX

IMAX Corporation, Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced that the long-awaited next chapter in the famed James Bond franchise, Skyfall, will be released in IMAX theatres simultaneously with the film's international release on Oct. 26, and its domestic release on Nov. 9, 2012. This is the first IMAX installment of the iconic Bond film franchise.

In Skyfall, Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Skyfall marks the return of Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming's James Bond 007, as well as Judi Dench reprising her role as M. The film also stars franchise newcomers Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris. The film is directed by Sam Mendes from a screenplay written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and John Logan. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producers.

"Skyfall will be the cool, must-see event release of the fall, and releasing the film in IMAX only reinforces that," said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution.

"It is fitting that with Skyfall marking the 50th Anniversary of the James Bond franchise, we celebrate in epic style and what could be more larger-than-life than IMAX joining the festivities," said Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers of MGM.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this legendary franchise, whose iconic characters and electrifying action will only be amplified in the IMAX format," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We are excited to rejoin forces with our friends at Sony Pictures Entertainment and MGM and so pleased to work with Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, and Sam Mendes to bring their vision to IMAX and Bond fans around the world."

The IMAX release of Skyfall will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience&#174 with proprietary IMAX DMR&#174 (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Skyfall comes to theaters November 9th, 2012 and stars Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench, Simon Russell Beale, Rhys Ifans, Helen McCrory. The film is directed by Sam Mendes.
