Michael Fassbender enters Trance

It was reported on Wednesday that Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle will be returning to form with the new heist thriller Trance, set in the high stakes world of Art. Michael Fassbender is now the first actor to become attached to the project.

Danny Boyle and his 127 Hours producing partner Christian Colson are currently in talks with Fox Searchlight and Pathe for distribution rights. Boyle hopes to have the film in theaters by 2013.

Trance comes to theaters February 2013 and stars Michael Fassbender. The film is directed by Danny Boyle.

What movies do you feel have deeper meanings that everyone around you seems to write off?

Posted: 07 May 2011 10:37 AM PDT

Whenever I get talking about this, my go to example is The Ring. Sure it was a creepy horror movie, but I can also argue that it was a statement about the television industry. My reasoning runs thus:

First words of the movie: "I hate television, it gives me headaches." This statement stuck out to me because it's odd. I myself am one of the few people I know who gets headaches from television. It's rare, and not something a large audience would relate with, so why say it, if there wasn't a purpose?

Plot line: Movie is discovered. Movie is short and consists of random, creepy images and ideas (much like tv). You have seven days to pass it on or a girl emerges from the television to kill you. So, essentially, the tv kills you (symbolically similar to someone wasting their life watching tv, to the point where your personality is completely formed by what you have been shown. Note also that the victims of this girl are left horribly disfigured with many attributes resembling the girl herself). If you share the movie with others, however, death passes you by and the cycle is continued. You eventually wind up with a large population who have all seen the same material and can relate. Again, much like how the spread of cultural references via tv actually occurs in the real world.

Hendrix Family Raising $2M for Park Memorial

A park adjacent to the Northwest African American Museum in Seattle's central district is set to be re-named the Jimi Hendrix Park, and will be renovated in his honor.

A brochure from the foundation website describes potential features which include a live music platform and walkways inscribed with his lyrics. The project moved forward this week when the Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation selected Murase Associates as the design team from a batch of 11 applicants, according to Central District News.

The project still needs to raise the remainder of the estimated $2m (£1.2m) cost of building the park. A recent donation of $20,000 (£12,132) from Janie Hendrix -- Jimi's step-sister, and co-manager of his estate -- brings the current funding total to $640,640 (£390,383), still 67% short of their total. The foundation aim to raise the full amount in time for what would have been Jimi's 70th birthday in 2012.

Has anyone seen an Australian film called Animal Kingdom?

Posted: 07 May 2011 06:42 AM PDT

If not everyone should check it out. What a spectacular crime film. Its probably the best film about the criminal underworld Ive seen since The Departed. Whats so great about it is it surprises you with almost every decision it makes. When you think its going to go one direction with a scene, it goes a completely different one and freaks you out intentionally. By the end of the film your mind is so fucked by the tension that its almost unbearable. On top of that you have fantastic performances by Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton, and especially Jacki Weaver (wow... just wow). I could not believe how awesome this film was.

Has anyone else had a chance to check this out?

Nerd-think while watching Thor

I was studying for a philosophy final and found this. If only this were a real ethical principle.

Which movie have you been unable to enjoy because of an unforgivable plot hole?

Posted: 07 May 2011 08:18 AM PDT

Here is mine: Spiderman 2. Doctor Octopus wants to kill Spiderman, at the request of Harry Osborn. OK fair enough. But he has no idea where to find him. So Harry tells him, ask Peter Parker, he seems to be very close to Spidey. Oh and btw Ock, don't kill Peter.

So what does Doc Ock do? He finds Peter Parker chilling in a cafe with MJ Watson, and he THROWS A FUCKING CAR AT HIM. Not only did he disregard Harry's request to not kill Peter, he also actively tries to murder the only guy he's aware of that can lead him to Spiderman! He had no idea that Peter Parker had spider sense, and this reckless car flinging would have certainly killed Peter if he didn't have it. If you're trying to extract information from someone you DON'T kill them before you actually have extracted it! Duh.

Dumb, dumb dumb screenwriting. All because they thought it makes for good action.

I was lucky enough to snag an internship with a company (The American Pavilion) that works the festival. I'm currently sitting the airport waiting for my flight to Nice. I am INCREDIBLY excited.

Anyone else going to be at the Festival this year?
