The Amazing Spider-Man Takes in $7.5 Million at Midnight Screenings

The Amazing Spider-Man takes in $7.5 million from midnight showings

The Amazing Spider-Man finally swung into theaters at midnight last night, taking in an impressive $7.5 million from the 12:01 AM screenings. The tally is on par with the last incarnation of the webbed wonder, Spider-Man 3, which went on to break box office records with a $151 million opening weekend back in May 2007.

Sony Pictures rolled out director Marc Webb's superhero reboot in 3,150 theaters last night, a healthy portion of the 4,318 theaters it opens in starting today. The action-adventure has already made a splash at the international box office, taking in $50.2 million in 13 overseas markets.

Since The Amazing Spider-Man is opening on a Tuesday, it likely won't break any three-day opening weekend records, but it should pull in a healthy total over the holiday weekend.

Be sure to check back Sunday to see how The Amazing Spider-Man fared at the box office.

The Amazing Spider-Man was released July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

Andy Griffith Passes Away at 86

Andy Griffith passes away at 86

Iconic television actor and gospel singer Andy Griffith has passed away at the age of 86. No cause of death has been confirmed, with the actor being laid to rest on Roanoke Island.

UNC President Bill Friday announced the death, which was later confirmed by the local sheriff. Andy Griffith is survived by his wife, Cindi Knight, who issued the following statement

"Andy was a person of incredibly strong Christian faith and was prepared for the day he would be called Home to his Lord. He is the love of my life, my constant companion, my partner, and my best friend. I cannot imagine life without Andy, but I take comfort and strength in God's Grace and in the knowledge that Andy is at peace and with God."

Andy Griffith was a regular on the Ed Sullivan show in the early 50s, but found ever-lasting fame on The Andy Griffith Show, which ran from 1960-1968, and can still be seen in syndication today. The character of small town sheriff Andy Taylor made Andy a household name and a TV icon. He would later parlay that fame into the role of lawyer Ben Matlock on Matlock, which ran from 1986-1995 and spun itself off into a number of stand-alone television movies.

In 2008, Andy Griffith reprised his role of Andy Taylor for a Ron Howard short film at the time of President Barack Obama's election to President of the United States. His last role was in Play the Game, which found a recently single grandpa learning new tricks on the dating field.

Andy Griffith has two children with Barbara Griffith, whom he divorced in 1972.

Andy Griffith passed away today and while we're all mourning the loss of this great guy, we can still revel in a small piece of his wonderful legacy: "The Fishin' Hole," best known as the whistle theme song from "The Andy Griffith Show."

However, instead of just listening to that lovely legato, let's go a step further and layer some Beyonce over it. As Paste Magazine posted a while back, San Francisco's DJ Party Ben spliced "Single Ladies" and Griffith's theme song into a seriously awesome mash-up. Rest in peace, Andy.

New PACIFIC RIM (Low-Res) Still Gives Us Our First Look At Charlie Hunnam

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. Last week, Marvel Studios unveiled the full details for Marvel's The Avengers' Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD release on September 25. One of the bonus features included is the short film Marvel One-Shot: Item 47. Today we have the first photo from this short, featuring star Lizzy Caplan, along with new plot details. Take a look at the photo and read on to learn more about the story.

Lizzy Caplan in Item 47

The actress will play Claire alongside Jesse Bradford, who plays her boyfriend Benny. The story centers on the couple who stumble upon one of the discarded alien guns from the final battle scene in Marvel's The Avengers. The title refers to the actual gun itself, which leads the downtrodden couple to make some, "incredibly bad decisions." Maximiliano Hern&#225ndez (Thor) and Titus Welliver are playing S.H.I.E.L.D. agents sent in to clean up the mess left behind by Benny and Claire. Here's what Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito had to say about the short, which he directed himself.

"The world is topsy-turvy now. There's been an alien invasion, and things are crazy. So when this gun &#173literally fell into their lap, this is a sign: We're going to rob a few banks, we're going to buy a boat, we're going to the Caribbean, and all our problems will be solved."

Marvel One-Shot: Item 47 will be screened in its entirety at San Diego Comic-Con 2012. The studio is also developing new Marvel One-Shot scripts for Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Captain America 2.

Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.
