Just found out a movie is being made about my units most recent deployment to Afghanistan

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST

A father son video journalistic team, where in bedded with my unit (specifically my company in a lot of parts) during it's last deployment to Afghanistan. The footage was originally used in a special for ABC news during the new years eve of 2011. From what I've heard, it was supposed to be released last christmas but with news of osama bin ladens death, they decided to wait. My guess is that they didn't want to compete with the media coverage surrounding seal team 6. I came to the unit while this was being shot; so I really won't be able to answer very many questions surrounding events that took place (I don't want to use speculation regarding the heroic events of other men). And with an upcoming deployment just around the bend, I probably wont be able to answer many questions regarding the unit or its current affairs (operational security reasons). I just thought this was really cool and that my fellow redditors might enjoy it also. CHEERS! EDIT: I don't know why the link didn't post http://thehornetsnestmovie.com/trailer

How is it do you think the Coen brothers get such eccentric performances from the bit parts in their films?

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 10:03 AM PST

Fargo and The Big Lebowski are chuck-full of memorable one-scene characters. Do you think it's in the casting? In the writing? Anyone any ideas in their directing techniques in regards to this?

EDIT: side question - Favourite bit-part character in a Coen film? Mine would be the "you're a fucking liar" guy in Fargo.

Movies that get you right in the feels? (Watched 500 days of summer last night and cried for the first time in YEARS)

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 11:11 AM PST

Watched 500 days of summer last night and cried for the first time in YEARS. That movie was wonderful but hard to watch - it really brings up the feels associated with every sort of relationship/breakup/heartache.

It was a bit cathartic for me even though I don't have anything terrible going on in my life right now; I guess it just made me feel. What are some other movies that elicit a lot of emotion? I'm not talking about super depressing movies or something like that, just movies that make really bring out emotion and connect with the viewer.

Just saw Rise of the Guardians at the premier last night...

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 10:58 AM PST

Somehow I ended up scoring two tickets to ROTG premier last night at the Ziegfeld theater. I knew almost nothing about the film--I saw the trailer and thought my kid will love it and I'll be his hero and maybe I'll get in a nice 90 minute nap.

Well, my son really liked the movie, and I fricking loved it. After seeing countless visually assaulting "kids" movies with the odd inside gag for the parents to keep them interested, this movie was so refreshingly....dark...and smart...and it actually told a goddamn story (a great one at that.)

I am a long-time redditor and have absolutely nothing to do with this film. I don't believe I've ever even posted to /r/movies before. I just feel like I saw something VERY special in this film and want to be the first to tell everyone who likes quality movies to see this.

Almost exactly a year ago, Spinner broke the news that acclaimed Canadian punk band Fucked Up would be taking a hiatus from touring because singer Damian Abraham needed time to focus on his family.

Following Fucked Up's typically sweaty, bruising set at Los Angeles' Fuck Yeah Fest, a festival which also featured reunited hardcore legends Quicksand, American Nightmare, Refused and an appearance by the Octomom, we sat down with Abraham again to address the band's potential break up.

"I admit that when I said it [that Fucked Up was breaking up], I was at a very low point," Abraham tells Spinner. "Finishing writing the record, you don't know how it's going to go. But I think we have one more record in us."
