Fox has reduced the order of its midseason comedy The Goodwin Games from 13 episodes to seven, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

A lack of room on Fox's Tuesday comedy block is the reason for the change, according to a network rep. Fox recently ordered 24 episodes of Raising Hope, New Girl and The Mindy Project, along with 19 episodes of Ben and Kate. The seven Goodwin Games episodes will air sometime in the spring.

The single-camera comedy, from How I Met Your Mother executive producers Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris, stars Becki Newton, Scott Foley and TJ Miller as estranged siblings who reconnect when they stand to inherit a fortune after their father's death.

Saoirse Ronan is moving into the world of comedy, signing on for the lead role in director Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Wes Anderson is directing from his own original screenplay. He will also produce alongside Scott Rudin and Indian Paintbrush's Steven M. Rales. Production is scheduled to begin next year in Germany.

Saoirse Ronan will next be seen in The Host, an adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's new novel.

Attention, artists: If Bruce Springsteen ever offers to write a song for you, don't get too excited -- especially if it winds up being a really good one. Because while the Boss has written several songs for other performers, he's been known to both giveth and taketh away.

He's not the only one to flip-flop on song destinations. Here are several hit songs that were intended for other artists but wound up with their makers.

"The Long and Winding Road," The Beatles

After meeting Paul McCartney in a club, hip-swinging Tom Jones asked the Beatle if he would write a song for him. A week later, McCartney sent one over -- with the requirement that Jones release it as his next single. Jones was all in favor, but his management wanted to stick to previous plans of releasing his song "Without Love (There is Nothing)" next. While "Without Love" became a Top 10 hit, "The Long and Winding Road" was the Fab Four's last single before breaking up. Jones said he spent years regretting the decision. "I was kicking myself," he told Wales Online in 2012.

Jon Favreau's Jersey Boys Goes Into Turnaround at Warner Bros.

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 09:04 AM PDT

Jersey Boys put into turnaround at Warner Bros.

Just under two months since Warner Bros. picked up Jersey Boys, the studio has now put the project in turnaround. GK Films is currently seeking a new studio home for this adaptation of the stage musical, shopping the project to both 20th Century Fox and Paramount.

We reported in June that Jon Favreau is directing this musical from a screenplay by John Logan (Skyfall), based on the Broadway play by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The story follows Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and their rise to fame throughout the 1960s.

Producers Graham King and Tim Headington previously developed the project at Sony, but took it to Warner Bros. after signing an exclusive first-look deal. Production was initially slated to begin in January for a Christmas 2013 release date.

Jersey Boys comes to theaters in 2014.

I've never seen a James Bond film. Where should I start?

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 08:52 AM PDT

So, yeah. I've never seen a single minute of a James Bond film, other than trailers and TV ads. No real reason, I've just never seen them. With Skyfall coming out soon, I want this to be my Season of Bond. Should I watch them in order? What's the best way to get started?

My thoughts on character representations through Cloud Atlas (FULL SPOILERS)

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 08:51 AM PDT

I've noticed many people are referencing the book, in which one soul is transmitted through six different people in six different times, and finding fault with the movie by the way the same actors appear in nearly every timeline. Confusion arises, for instance, regarding the Tom Hanks character, who seemingly goes from bad to sniveling to good to bad to good again. Well.... I have thoughts on that, and the other characters.

TOM HANKS

(I'll go into a bit extra detail with him, as he causes the most confusion)

He represents the conflict of what man should do and wants to do, constantly teetering on the edge - and perhaps more importantly, directly in control of someone else's destiny, and as such, all of humanity's.

In the beginning, he's a doctor who allows greed to take him over, poisoning instead of healing the lawyer. In the small cameo appearance in the 1936 segment, he's once again in control of the destiny of the musician protagonist. Should he report him to the police? Should he allow him to live there without questions? At this point, the Hanks character has reached a middle ground and extorts him while allowing him to stay.

In the 70s he's working for a vile corporation under a corrupt man, but upon meeting Halle Berry decides to - for the first time - do what he should do. He helps her out, but dies. 30 years later, he's now a convict trying to redeem himself via a novel. At the party thrown for his novel, he connects with Halle Berry again, but doesn't follow through. Halle - who I'll get to later - is always the teetering point for him. In this case, he misses the opportunity to talk to her, winds up taking the dark path again, and kills the critic. It is, in some ways, the opposite of what happened in the 70s.

When we get to the post-apocalyptic story, this is all pretty clear cut. He's torn by the rituals of his tribe and the hope and science brought by Halle and her people. Much like in the 70s story, she is able to "turn him good" for lack of a better phrase, and this time - finally - they live happily ever after.

HUGO WEAVING

He represents the order of things. It's pretty clear cut. He's a slaver, then a German right before World War 2, then an assassin hired to cover up for big business, then a cruel nurse in a retirement home, then the figurehead of an evil corporation, then a "ghost" of sorts representing rituals, customs, and fear in an apocalyptic world.

HUGH GRANT

He is consistently a predatory supervisor. Someone directly, and (unlike Hugo Weaving) personally preying on the weak. The head, corrupt corporation guy, the cruel brother, the boss of the clones, and finally the leader of the cannibals. (His other little bit roles also play into this a bit, but it's so small and fleeting it doesn't really matter either way. Knocking on the door of the gay couple, for instance, we can assume to persecute them.)

JIM STURGESS

Jim consistently plays a man that helps out the weak/innocent/persecuted. This one is quite clear. First, he rescues and befriends a slave. Later, in 2012, he and his friends at the bar defend the four elderly protagonists who are unable to help themselves. In the Neo-Seoul storyline, he's an action hero saving not only a clone, but all of humanity.

DOONA BAE

Her soul is that of the persecuted, disrespected, and discounted person that rises up with help from others to eventually destroy order (aka, Hugo Weaving). She stands up to her abolitionist father and lives her own life. Later, she saves Halle Berry by killing the assassin after he discounts her as a "fucking wetback." In Neo-Seoul, well, it's the plot: she rises up against the evil corporation and changes the world.

JIM BROADBENT

Consistently the aging man dealing with a new, changing world. He struggles with the idea of allowing a black slave stowaway to continue living on his ship, but comes to grips with the idea. Later, he uses a young man's musical talent for his own sake and passively aggressively competes with him for new dog vs old dog supremacy. In his main plotline in the 2000s, he faces dilemmas with a young, abrasive Tom Hanks and his goons, his retirement home prison with courtesy Evil Nurse, and an ex girlfriend who's gone and changed without him (though they end up together.)

JAMES D'ARCY

James is consistently the man left to cope with something dark left by a main protagonist (with the shooting star birthmark), unable to do anything about it. His lover (who has the star birthmark) kills himself as he's a few stories below, and he's unable to save him. He spends the rest of his life reading his letters, wishing he could have done something to prevent it. As this same old man, he once again must try to deal with the implications brought by Hugh Grant's corrupt business. He nearly tells Halle Berry (again, shooting star), but once again fails to do so and is killed shortly after. However, in the Neo-Seoul timeline, he once again is responsible with a heavy burden to bear - the truth revealed by Doona Bae's clone, who also has the star birthmark - but this time does do something about it, leading to her infamy 100s of years later, and tying up his soul's everlasting need to make a move.

HALLE BERRY

She's an interesting one... she starts off as a slave, then a Jew right before World War 2, then a black female reporter in the 70s (still persecuted - Hugh Grant's comments for instance - but better off than the former two), and finally the savior of mankind. Honestly, I think her character is mostly meant to go with Tom Hanks, and it's not so much about her as it is the "power of their love." It starts in the 70s - he's killed but is able to help her. Then in 2012, they see each other but fail to really meet, so their love isn't able to save Tom. Finally, after the apocalypse, their eternal love conquers all and serves as the final shot.

Other characters don't have noteworthy roles in enough plotlines to really delve into, even Ben Whishaw (the gay musician). I'm also admittedly not counting tiny "for the fun of it" apperances like Halle Berry as the male Asian doctor in Neo-Seoul.

I suppose the interesting thing of note is that all of these characters tend to "get their shit together" at the end of their arcs... and yet, had any of them figured things out sooner - or gone better - the rest of the story couldn't happen. Tom and Halle not talking in 2012, for instance, directly lead to the entire ordeal for his publicist, directly leading to the movie that the clone saw a clip of in Neo-Seoul, resulting in that entire plot line, causing the apocalypse. That's one example of many.

So anyway, am I crazy? Onto something? Anyone have thoughts to share? Good lord I'm tired of typing now.

Voodoo Fest Death: Man Dies After One Drop of Synthetic Drug

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:34 PM PDT

This past weekend's Voodoo Music Experience brought acts like Metallica, Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Jack White to New Orleans' City Park. But according to Nola.com, tragedy struck Saturday night (Oct. 27) when a young man died from a new synthetic drug while attending the festival.

Clayton Otwell of Little Rock, Ark. had just helped a stranger find his phone amongst the sweaty bodies at one of Voodoo's many musical showcases. To repay the kind concertgoer, the stranger offered Otwell a dose of 25-I, a new synthetic drug often compared to LSD.
