As a response to the 'perfectly cast actors' thread

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 10:29 AM PST

Tell me the actors that should have been cast for a role instead of the actor that ended up playing the role.

My current favourite is Tim Roth should have played Constantine instead of Keanu

The best "OH SHIT" moments in movies

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 07:25 AM PST

What's an "OH SHIT" moment? Well it's kind of similar to a "shit just got real" moment. There are overlaps and differences, though.

When shit gets real, it's a major turning point, a moment of no return. Often this means that a situation that looked like it was relatively under control or OK turns bad and things get personal for the protagonist.

An OH SHIT moment can be a subset of shit getting real, but it can also be a very different thing. An OH SHIT moment is when the viewer and the protagonist realize that they are in over their heads, well and truly screwed.

I'll provide one of my favourite examples to show you what I mean: Aliens. Apologies for the lack of clips; couldn't find them on YouTube.

The marines are investigating the colony of Hadley's Hope, looking for survivors after what appears to have been some kind of battle. They find all the colonists' radio tags in the reactor and head down to investigate. Now, in a horror movie what you expect to see is characters being picked off one by one. That's not what happens here.

The aliens ambush the marines and utterly massacre them. The highly-trained combat veterans panic and run and scream like children. Only a handful of them make it out alive. SHIT JUST GOT REAL. However, please note that this also an OH SHIT moment.

Here's where the distinction comes in. The surviving marines escape the colony and call for a pickup to return to their ship, planning to nuke the site from orbit (it's the only way to be sure). But when the shuttle is about to land, we realize an alien managed to sneak aboard. It kills the pilot and the shuttle crashes and burns. Now the handful of marines with almost no remaining gear is stuck on a planet infested with hundreds or even thousands of ruthless killing machines.

OH SHIT.

Note that this is not a shit just got real moment. Shit is already very real. Shit got real when the marines were attacked. The shuttle exploding is a different kind of moment - the OH SHIT moment.

So with all that explained, what are your favourite OH SHIT moments in movies?

Canadian electro-pop star Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) was recently forced to cancel her tour. "Hey guys, so sorry 4 the cancelled shows. im having trouble w hearing loss, tinnitus & am trying 2 stay away from loud music 4 a bit," she tweeted after cancelling a string of Canadian dates. A few days later she scrapped her entire European tour. "It's depressing to cancel more shows, but we have to cancel all Grimes dates in Europe due to health issues :( im having hearing problems and im supposed to limit my exposure to loud noise for as long as possible."

Grimes is 24.

Hearing loss is something that unfortunately can't be healed over any period of time and is a risk that musicians and concertgoers alike take every time they attend a show, record an album or even just listen to music.

COMICS: Marvel Launches All Female Team Book 'Fearless Defenders'

Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:22 AM PST

When the teaser for Fearless hit the web many folks (like me) were scared that Mark Waid was being pulled off Daredevil. It turns out that the teaser was for Fearless Defenders, a new ongoing series from Cullen Bunn and Marvel newcomer Will Sliney. It's a team book, with only the two co-leads revealed as part of the roster so far, Misty Knight and Valkyrie. Said Bunn on the basic premise of the book--- "The basic idea of the book is that Valkyrie is choosing a new team of Valkyrior, and she's been asked to choose all these women from the heroes of Midgard, instead of from Asgard. She has completely failed in this task. [Laughs.] Valkyrie has been unable to choose anyone that she feels is worthy to be one of the hosts of the shield maidens. So she just hasn't done it. She's dropped the ball. Because
