Liev Schreiber: ‘I Have the Kind of Face That People Want to Punch’

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 11:06 AM PDT

With a range of roles spanning nearly two decades, Liev Schreiber is ready for a change, but it's not what he initially had in mind. The actor sat down with New York Magazine to discuss his newfound appreciation for working in television, how his kids make him selfless, and why when you first meet him, you may want to punch him.

The Tony Award winner never saw a future in television, but knew that he wanted to do something different, saying that while theater stays the same, after "three months I go mad." Picking up the role of "Ray Donovan" in Showtime's new drama, Schreiber said that he never considered acting in a TV show because, "I hate doing the same thing over and over again… but what's interesting about series television is that it is not infinite like a play. It is unknown and unfolds in the way that life does."

Paris Jackson Transferred to Same Hospital Where Michael Jackson Died

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 10:51 AM PDT

Troubled teen Paris Jackson was transferred to UCLA Medical Center on Sunday, ending her 72-hour psychiatric hold. The center, ironically, is the same place where her dad, Michael Jackson, died of cardiac arrest in 2009.

TMZ spotted Paris and her bodyguards being wheeled into the hospital.

As for Paris' recovery, TMZ also reports that L.A. Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff, who is overseeing the guardianship of Michael Jackson's three children, has ordered an investigator to "prepare a written report and include therein any recommendations relating to the minor child's health, education and welfare."

Best American history movies for a teacher in need?

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 09:10 AM PDT

I'm an 8th grade U.S. history teacher and my hope is that next year once a week after school I will be able to show a movie that will in some way supplement what we are learning. I'm trying to show the kids movies that will help them empathize with the people of the time and also help them contextualize historical events, as well as introduce them to great movies.

We study from 1492 to the present (though there is some content that deals with Native American life before the Europeans and the development of the Magna Carta). I have a short list so far that is divided thematically/ chronologically, but I need input. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I need the most help with early settlement/ colonial era, the gap between the revolution and the civil war (any good movies about the trail of tears?), reconstruction/ gilded age/ progressive era, WWI, and the cultural 1970's.

Here's my list so far (it has more movies on it than I could ever show, but I figure it's easy to pare down):

Settlement (1492-1700) • A New World (I actually hated this movie and I really don't want to show it to the kids) • The Crucible

Colonial Era (1700-1770) • Last of the Mohicans

Revolution (1770-1790) • Patriot • 1776 • John Adams

Nation Building (1790-1830)

States' Rights, a Young Country, Expansionism (1830-1860) • Amistad • Gangs of New York (I need something about immigrants in the new world, but this is too violent)

Civil War (1861-1865) • Gone With the Wind • Gettysburg • Glory • Lincoln

Reconstruction (1865-1890) • Tombstone • Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee • The Color Purple

Gilded Age/ Progressive Era (1890-1920-ish) • Showboat • Iron Jawed Angels

WWI (1915-1920) • All Quiet on the Western Front • A Farewell to Arms • East of Eden

1920's • Singin' in the Rain • The Untouchables • Citizen Kane • Great Gatsby • Modern Times • Chicago

Great Depression • Grapes of Wrath • It's a Wonderful Life • To Kill a Mockingbird • Paper Moon • Bonnie and Clyde • Cinderella Man

WWII • The Best Years of Our Lives • Band of Brothers • Casablanca • Hiroshima, Mon Amour

1950's (Americanism, Communism, and the Civil War) • Death of a Salesman • MASH • Good Night and Good Luck • Last Picture Show • Manchurian Candidate

Civil Rights Movement • Malcolm X • Mississippi Burning • The Ghosts of Mississippi

Vietnam • Apocalypse Now (probably won't get administrative approval) • Good Morning Vietnam

1960's • Dr. Strangelove • 13 Days • Across the Universe

1970's at home • Milk • Norma Rae

1980's • Wall Street • Angels in America

1990's

Present

Notes: a little cursing and historically-relevant violence are fine (they have permission slips) but please, no nudity or gratuitous violence.
