RealD Announces the Luxe: A RealD Experience Large Format Initiative

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 10:05 AM PDT

RealD announces Luxe: A RealD Experience

At a special presentation to European cinema exhibitors at CineEurope, RealD Inc. today introduced LUXE: A RealD Experience, a premium large format (PLF) initiative aimed at unifying the exhibition community under a single brand with a goal of becoming synonymous with the ultimate out of home entertainment experience. Minimum standards will assure all LUXE: A RealD Experience auditoriums feature massive screens, ultra bright 2D and 3D, enveloping audio and luxury seating for a premium movie-going experience. LUXE: A RealD Experience auditoriums will provide full flexibility with content, allowing exhibitors to show any movie at any time for optimized profitability.

RealD's Worldwide Cinema President released the following statement about this new format.

"Disparate premium large format brands have limited the potential of today's high-end cinema offerings. With an alphabet soup of brands and differing amenities in each auditorium, moviegoers have been left unable to truly equate their PLF experience with a single offering. LUXE: A RealD Experience intends to solve this puzzle by unifying the exhibition community under one brand with one set of industry leading technology standards for an exceptional entertainment experience moviegoers will seek out for years to come."

LUXE: A RealD Experience auditoriums are expected to launch this winter beginning in Europe and will include the rebranding of existing PLF locations as well as new auditoriums upgraded to minimum technology specifications. Exclusively available to RealD licensees, the LUXE: A RealD Experience brand is projected to expand into other territories around the world thereafter. Additional details on participating exhibitors and availability are to be announced.

Robert Mayson, Managing Director of RealD Europe, also released the following statement.

"The studio and exhibition communities have long called for a PLF unification strategy to best capitalize on the profit potential of this fast growing premium cinema segment. RealD is uniquely positioned at the intersection of content, exhibition and technology, allowing us to best serve the industry and moviegoers alike with a singular premium cinema experience we believe will become synonymous with out of home entertainment at its finest."

Paul Heth, CEO of Karo Film, who anticipates installing multiple "LUXE: A RealD Experience" auditoriums across his circuit added the following statement.

"One of the first major changes I made after acquiring Karo Film, one of Russia's leading cinema circuits, was to greatly upgrade our 3D technology by using only RealD for our 3D screenings. Audiences that are paying premium prices deserve a premium experience. We are investing substantial resources and capital to ensure our millions of patrons have the very best movie-going experience. For Karo Film's larger state-of-the-art auditoriums we plan to use LUXE: A RealD Experience to even further segment and improve our 2D and 3D premium offering. This initiative from our company and RealD is important because we have the chance to present a unique, quality experience under a global brand and be able to program those screens as we need. Having a universal standard coupled with our market leading cinemas will be the quality assurance consumers need to know they are experiencing a true luxury cinema experience."

All LUXE: A RealD Experience auditoriums will meet minimum technology specifications to assure a premium cinema experience, such as: usage of RealD 3D, the industry's brightest 3D projection technology; wall-to-wall/floor-to-ceiling screens of at least 16 meters in width; 3D sound; auditorium rakes to optimize patron's views and more. Additional exclusive new technologies to be announced are expected to be incorporated into LUXE: A RealD Experience auditoriums.

Stefan Minchev, CEO of Arena Cinema, added his own statement.

"Arena adopted RealD during 2012 as our 3D technology of choice. We have been delighted with the premium quality of our offering and our customers echo that. We have been looking for a brand to promote our new Premium Large Format screens. We plan to use LUXE: A RealD Experience initially in 7 of our largest auditoriums and then expect to add another 6 screens as they open over the next year or so. Having the power of a global brand is very exciting to us here in Bulgaria."

Motion picture studios have helped drive the LUXE: A RealD Experience unification strategy as the singular platform to best drive moviegoers to a more profitable large format offering where moviegoers can be assured of an entertainment experience that delivers the true intent of the filmmaker.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation CEO offered his own statement.

"RealD is a great partner dedicated to delivering the highest quality movie-going experience to consumers and to that end we are wholly supportive of their new Jeffrey Katzenberg premium large format brand."

Paramount Pictures International president Anthony Marcoly added this statement about the LUXE: A RealD Experience.

"With premium large format box office figures growing double digits year on year, it's clear that a greater number of moviegoers are demanding a premium cinema experience. RealD's new initiative, LUXE: A RealD Experience, delivers the ever increasing quality expected in the evolving PLF market for premium viewing of 2D and 3D content alike."

RealD is the world's most widely used 3D cinema technology with approximately 22,700 screens equipped with RealD 3D by approximately 1,000 exhibitors in 68 countries around the world (as of March 31, 2013).

Pacific Rim IMAX Fanfix Poster

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 10:43 AM PDT

On July 12, IMAX will continue its long tradition of servicing fans with its latest IMAX Fanfix poster. Artist Sergio Grisanti created this Pacific Rim one-sheet, which captures the visual energy and singular take that director Guillermo del Toro has stamped on the genre. It will be available for free to those first in line to see the movie in IMAX.

Director Guillermo del Toro had this to say about the creation of this particular poster for the film.

"I am thrilled to introduce Sergio Grisanti to the world. For years he has been a highly respected commercial artist. When I was first exposed to his art for Pacific Rim, I knew instantly that he was a powerhouse of talent. He created the Jaeger posters/card art we used at WonderCon. Without any hesitation I asked him to create this new Imax Fanfix art. Look at it closely - with a magnifying glass! So much going on! Such power! Such beauty! Sergio loves his Kaijus and his Mecha, and it shows. The poster, like my film, is a tribute to well-loved things. I wish all the fans the best time at the first Imax screenings of Pacific Rim. Enjoy!"

Pacific Rim comes to theaters July 12th, 2013 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Diego Klattenhoff, Burn Gorman, Robert Kazinsky. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro.

The Wolverine Jean Grey Character Poster

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 10:15 AM PDT

The latest watercolor painted one-sheet for The Wolverine carries on the tradition of the sumi-e ink campaign created by Fox's Chief Creative Officer Tony Sella. Here, we see Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen, whose ghost will guide Logan (Hugh Jackman) on his journey through Japan. Check it out, and then read on for comments from director James Mangold, who reassures comic book fans that this adventure is purely a standalone story with no ties to the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. And like a proper one-off, it has a beginning, middle, and definitive ending.

The Wolverine Jean Gray Photo

The Wolverine has long been rumored to contain a post-credit stinger that reveals Patrick Stewart as Professor X coming to retrieve Logan at the airport, which will lead directly into the release of next summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past. While director James Mangold doesn't deny this, he wants to make it clear to fans who might be disappointed come opening night that the two films have nothing in common, and are not tied together in any way. As stated before, The Wolverine takes place years after every movie in the franchise, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, at a time when all of the Mutants we now know are dead and buried.

"[X-Men: Days of Future Past Director] Bryan [Singer] and I have talked and he's seen what we've done. Clearly the reality is that we are all trying to work together and make things groove together. But the trick is we were making our movie before Bryan came on and before I knew what they were up to in that film. Our agenda was always our agenda and our movie stands alone, so the journey we take Logan on in The Wolverine, we bring to a close."

That said, its likely that there will still be a post credit stinger. It's just that the two films will not be tied together within their story structure, and like we see with some of the Jean Grey footage, this rumored cookie will serve as a flashback.

The Wolverine comes to theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima. The film is directed by James Mangold.

The triumphant third season of Game of Thrones is set to be released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on February 18, 2014. The box set will feature the beautiful dragon shadow image however; the fate of the exclusive Best Buy packaging is in the hands of fans. Over the past two years, the sigil box art sold at the nationwide retailer has become a favorite among fans who have taken to message boards and social platforms to speculate over which images will be featured then struggle over which one to purchase. Now they can decide!

Via a social media poll, Game of Thrones devotees will pick the Season 3 exclusive covers. There are three stylish options: a "Character Edition" featuring third season poster art of Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke; "Season 3 New Sigils" featuring the sigils of Houses Tyrell, Tully and Stannis Baratheon who were prominent this season; or "Bring Back Your Favorite Sigil" with Houses Stark and Targaryen (Season 1) and Lannister (Season 2).

Here's what HBO Home Entertainment Marketing VP Meredith Vincent had to say in a statement.

"We love that Game of Thrones fans are so passionate and vocal about our home entertainment products and the reaction to the Best Buy exclusive packaging has been fantastic for two years running. This is a fun and exciting way to reward fans and give them a direct voice into what is created for the next release."

The polling begins Monday, June 24th on the Game of Thrones and Best Buy (US) Facebook pages. Each page will host a gallery of the exclusive packaging options and fans can cast their single vote by "liking" the appropriate image. The votes will be tallied in real-time so fans can keep track of which option is gaining the most support. Voting ends on Sunday, July 21st and the winning art will be revealed on both Facebook pages, and available for pre-order, on Friday, August 2nd.

The Best Buy exclusive packaging will be available in all retail locations nationwide as well as Future Shop in Canada and additional international stores to be confirmed at a later date. Information on the BD/DVD bonus features will be announced by the end of year.

Original General Zod Terence Stamp Interrupts MAN OF STEEL Discussion In Cinema Toilet

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 10:08 AM PDT

We love a bit of "Stampage" here on CBM. The actor is something of a Brit icon, having appeared in the likes of Young Guns, Far from the Madding Crowd, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert and of course, Superman 2 as the villainous General Zod. He is also very spiritual, funny, forthcoming, and what you might call...eccentric. We've covered quite a few of his very interesting (often bizarre) anecdotes about starring in not only Superman but Star Wars too, and his latest account to the audience at the LA Landmark Theatre on running into a group of fans discussing Man Of Steel is a good one indeed. "I spent an hour and a half driving down here from Ojai, and the first thing I wanted to do when I got out was take a leak. I go into the men's bathroom and there's a whole load of guys – obviously, 'Man Of

Nelson Mandela in Critical Condition, South African Govt. Issues Statement

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 10:13 AM PDT

Former South African President Nelson Mandela's health has not improved after being admitted on June 8 for a recurring lung infection, and he is now in critical condition.

The current president, Jacob Zuma, who visited the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital on Sunday, said in a statement, "The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba," using Mandela's clan name, "is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands."

Zuma also discussed the incident in which the ambulance carrying Mandela to the Pretoria hospital two weeks ago had engine trouble, requiring a transfer of the frail Mandela to another ambulance. There is speculation that Mandela suffered cardiac arrest in the process.

The South African president stated, "There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care. The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report."

Mandela's family, including wife Graca Machel, have been seen visiting the beloved figure at the hospital.

Many around the world see Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, as a symbol of reconciliation. He was jailed for 27 years under apartheid rule and released in 1990. He then was a key player in ending the apartheid era, becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been found guilty of having sex with an underage prostitute, The Associated Press reports. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and is barred from holding any public office for the rest of life.

The charges against Berlusconi, 76, stem from a 2010 party where prosecutors said he had sex with Karima el-Mahroug, known as Ruby, who was 17 at the time. Both parties denied the allegations, but in  a different trial, El-Mahroug testified that after each party, Berlusconi gave her up to 3,000 euros. El-Mahroug failed to show up for her testimony in Berlusconi's trial and was eventually dropped as a witness.
