10 Reasons Why James Gandolfini Was One of the Greatest Actors of Our Time

Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:58 AM PDT

Like many people, when the announcement came through that renowned actor James Gandolfini had died of a massive heart attack at the age of 51, we couldn't believe what we were reading. It was so shocking that other news organizations like CNN thought that it might be a hoax as Gandolfini's name had been linked to such things in the past.

Sadly, this was not the case.

In the ensuing hours after the announcement a lot of things were bandied about. Causes, how the actor lived, what kind person he was... And the one constant that wasn't a surprise to anybody was the fact that James Gandolfini was one helluva an actor. Simply adding him to a movie, in a role big or small, elevated that project.

So it is with complete respect and devotion that we present 10 Reasons Why James Gandolfini Was One of the Greatest Actors of Our Time.

1 Tony Soprano in The Sopranos

Tony Soprano in The Sopranos

As the character of Tony Soprano, James Gandolfini made us all respect the gangster dad from suburbia. He was tough as nails but he was also a vulnerable family man. In a show that spanned 6 seasons we saw this screen legend go through every up and down imaginable. From fighting with kids, separating from his wife, killing his friends, consolidating his power, it was a relentless barrage of the everyman that kept us tuning in. So special was this show that it became one of the first pay TV shows to A) make Sunday night an event on cable and B) make people realize that the best stuff on TV was not being produced by the three biggest networks. In the final episode, we were left wondering what happened to the Soprano clan. Were they killed as they ate that meal? Did they leave unscathed and go about their lives? There was fury by many people who didn't like the absence of closure to that show. Some people say that the ending was brilliant because of that. What it all boils down to is that people loved this show and, like the loss of Gandolfini now, nobody was going to be happy whatever the outcome because Tony Soprano was gone.

2 Winston Baldry in The Mexican

Winston Baldry in The Mexican

James Gandolfini was riding the cusp of all the glory that playing Tony Soprano could give him at the time he made this film. A list actors were begging to work with him. So what does he do? He plays a gay guy in a shoot-em-up romantic comedy with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. This quirky film, directed by Gore Verbinski, is almost a declaration by James Gandolfini. No, the man wasn't coming out of the closet. Rather, it seems like he was saying to fans and non-fans alike, "Just because you think I'm Tony, don't be so quick to understand me." In a film that features some interesting performances from Hollywood's megastars, James Gandolfini as Winston Baldry is clearly the one we most want to spend screen time with.

3 Virgil in True Romance

Virgil in True Romance

In a film that is replete with interesting performances, James Gandolfini shines as the gun toting thug in search of stolen cocaine. Everything about his role here is memorable. From how he shoots his gun, to how he evades bullets, to how he barnstorms the screen with a 'take no prisoners' style. Tony Soprano was always calm until he couldn't hold that countenance. Virgil is a gleeful bull in a china shop and with less screen time, he manages to make just as strong a mark as his other extremely memorable co-stars.

4 C.I.A Director in Zero Dark Thirty

C.I.A. Director in Zero Dark Thirty

James Gandolfini is in this movie for what, 10 minutes? That may be the case, but he's also the person that decides if the main character Maya (Jessica Chastain) gets to prep the Navy Seals that eventually took out Osama Bin Laden. Director Kathryn Bigelow is no idiot. She could have cast a lot of other actors in a role that was essentially a walk on. She seemed to know that this role needed an actor that could bring gravity with minimal screen time. James Gandolfini not only sizzles in this role, we can't get enough of what he brought to the decision making process in the greatest manhunt in U.S. military history.

5 Colonel Winter in The Last Castle

Colonel Winter in The Last Castle

It is a testament to the acting chops of James Gandolfini that he could pull off what he did here. It was right after 9/11 and movies were trying come to terms with dealing with themes that some groups might not feel were patriotic. Robert Redford as Lt. General Eugene Irwin was supposed to the hero in this film. However, he was so smug and so condescending to James Gandolfini 's Colonel Winter, one couldn't help but root for the "villain" James Gandolfini was supposed to be. This says nothing of the many olive branches that James Gandolfini 's character extends throughout the film. At the core of James Gandolfini was an actor that movie watchers just wanted to love... right or wrong.

Mickey in Killing Them Softly

In this sprawling tale of gangsters, heists gone wrong, and harsh killings we are given respite in the form of James Gandolfini 's Mickey. This character, who spends much of his screen time in a bathrobe, comes into town to kill someone. When he's forced to wait he ends up falling in love with a hooker he's known for three weeks. In the hands of many other actors this role could have bordered on the comedic. Sure, James Gandolfini has some funny moments, but it all serves to underscore the tragedy that is Mickey's lot in life. Again, minimal screen time and James Gandolfini 's the one we most want to take home with us when the lights come up.

7 The Voice of Carol in Where the Wild Things Are

Carol in Where the Wild Things Are

The brutality of being a misunderstood child is on clear display in Spike Jonze 's coming of age film. In the role of Carol, James Gandolfini gives a voice to another misunderstood being. With a gentleness that makes James Gandolfini 's inimitable tone feel reverential, we are able to understand with full acuity the idea of a wild creature who destroys because that is simply what they do. Next time you watch this film, close your eyes and take in the wonderful cadence with which James Gandolfini delivers his most potent lines. It is almost as if he is speaking to each viewer individually.

8 Lt. General George Miller in In the Loop

George Miller in In the Loop

James Gandolfini plays a major military figure who doesn't want the U.S. to go to war in director Armando Iannucci 's satirical send up of Washington and world politics. James Gandolfini is so unassuming as a General here, that it is easy to get confused when you are seeing this movie. It is supposed to be a comedy, but the laughs are so understated that one might wonder if General Miller is a bit of a dim bulb. However, as the layers of this movie begin to peel away, one quickly realizes that James Gandolfini's genius lies in not going for the obvious, easy laugh.

9 Big Dave Brewster in The Man Who Wasn't There

Dave Brewster in The Man Who Wasn't There

The Coen Brothers seemed to know that James Gandolfini would be bigger than life in this black and white opus about a chain smoking barber (Billy Bob Thornton) who's murder plot goes to the dogs. James Gandolfini is mostly here to chew the scenery but it never feels like a stunt. Nothing about this character, who tells World War II yarns to anybody who will listen, ever borders on the disingenuous. We have a character that is happy just being in this crazy, celluloid world, and in a lot of ways it serves as a metaphor for James Gandolfini's whole career. He wasn't a man who sought the spotlight. The spotlight, once he was illuminated, couldn't get enough of this incredible talent.

10 Being Who James Gandolfini Was

James Gandolfini

Mike Tyson once talked about admiring Frank Sinatra. He didn't admire him for his singing or performing talents, he admired him for how he was as a person. He spoke of how Sinatra did selfless acts all the time and never wanted notice for it. In an age when actors fart and feel the need to post it on Twitter or turn it into a media event, James Gandolfini quietly conducted himself like a true gentlemen. Whether it was his work with veterans of U.S. wars, or how he treated other performers on the set, everybody doesn't like somebody but nobody has anything bad to say about James Gandolfini. May he rest in peace.

The Exorcist 40th Anniversary Director's Cut Blu-ray Debuts September 8th

Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:56 AM PDT

The Exorcist 40th Anniversary Blu-ray debuts October 8th

When The Exorcist was first released in 1973, viewers were frightened out of their wits - and literally out of their seats. Now Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Academy Award winning director William Friedkin's suspense masterpiece that haunted and intrigued the world, with a new Blu-ray release featuring the Extended Director's Cut and Theatrical Version with new special features and premiums ($49.99 SRP). Available October 8, just ahead of Halloween, this 40th Anniversary Edition will include two new featurettes: "Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist" and "Talk of the Devil," as well as an excerpt from Friedkin's book The Friedkin Connection: A Memoir.

A true cinema landmark, the theological thriller is one of the top ten box-office performers of all time. The Exorcist took 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two Oscars, for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as winning for Best Sound. Subsequently, the film went on to become a multi-million dollar franchise. Directed by Friedkin (Oscar-winner for The French Connection - Directing 1971) and written by William Peter Blatty, the film is based on his best-selling novel, which sold nearly 13 million copies domestically and was the #1 book on the New York Times Best Seller List for 57 weeks, 17 of them at #1.

Regarding the Extended Director's Cut, Friedkin had this to say.

"After my initial cut, I took out 12 more minutes before we released it in theaters. Years later, Bill Blatty asked if I'd review some of that rejected footage (which he always felt should have remained) with an eye towards putting it back in a new version. In so doing I believe we strengthened the spiritual aspect of the film."

Celebrated for his directorial role in this seminal film, Friedkin is still very much in the limelight. His new book, The Friedkin Connection: A Memoir, recently published by HarperCollins, extensively discusses the background and casting of The Exorcist. The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films will honor Friedkin this month with their Lifetime Achievement Award for his continually influential work in genre entertainment at this year's Saturn Awards. In August, Friedkin will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 70th Venice International Film Festival, where he will present the restored version of Warner Bros.' Sorcerer. And Friedkin and author Blatty will attend a special 40th Anniversary screening of their film at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. on October 30. The film will also have an exclusive theatrical engagement October 31 through November 7th at the AMC Georgetown.

Synopsis

The Exorcist tells the now-famous story of a girl's demonic possession, and a gripping fight between good and evil. Linda Blair, in a breakout role, plays Regan, a young girl who starts to exhibit strange, arcane behavior. Her mother (Ellen Burstyn, Oscar-winner for Best Actress Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore) calls upon a priest, Father Karras (Jason Miller) to investigate. But Karras, who has a spiritual crisis of his own, is suddenly confronted with the unimaginable evil of Regan's possession. Father Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow), an archeologist-priest, is called to help, and a horrific battle for her soul begins.

Special Features:

  • Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist (NEW) 40 years after his novel was published, The Exorcist author, screenwriter and producer returns to where it all began. First stop is a cabin/guest house in the hills of Encino, California, where Blatty wrote the novel. The author visits the place for the first time in 40 years and shares not only memories of writing the book, but also discusses how it inspired him. We then meet Blatty in two key and iconic locations; Georgetown University where the film was shot, and at the now-famous Exorcist steps. Throughout, Blatty reads from his novel, including an excerpt from a chilling newly published passage.
  • Talk of the Devil (NEW) - While at Georgetown University, William Peter Blatty heard about a true case of possession from Father Eugene Gallagher. At the time the film came out, the priest talked at length about exorcism, the true story and about Blatty; this footage is now available for the first time in many years. Star Wars: Episode VII to Shoot in London's Pinewood Studios

Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:53 AM PDT

Star Wars: Episode VII will shoot at U.K.'s Pinewood Studios next year

Director J.J. Abrams, Walt Disney Pictures, and LucasFilm are heading to Pinewood Studios in London next year to shoot the highly-anticipated sequel Star Wars: Episode VII.

We reported last month that the production was heading to the U.K., but that report didn't specify which of the famed British studios this sci-fi adventure would be shot in. The production is already setting up shop at Pinewood to begin preparations for the early 2014 shoot, with casting already under way. Earlier this week, leaked casting breakdowns revealed more information about the new characters fans will see when Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters in 2015.

All six of the previous Star Wars movies had utilized U.K. studios such as Pinewood, Elstree, Shepperton, Leavesden, and Ealing. Here's what producer Kathleen Kennedy had to say about shooting in the U.K. in May.

"We've devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of Star Wars as inspiration for our process on the new movie, and I'm thrilled that returning to the UK for production and utilizing the incredible talent there can be a part of that. Speaking from my own longstanding connection to the UK with films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun and recently War Horse, it's very exciting to be heading back."

J.J. Abrams is directing from a screenplay by Michael Arndt. We'll keep you posted with more details regarding the production as we near closer to the start of principal photography.

Star Wars: Episode VII comes to theaters in 2015 and stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Debuts September 13th

    Posted: 21 Jun 2013 10:50 AM PDT

On September 13th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will provide plenty of blood-curdling thrills when Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection debuts on Blu-ray. For the first time, all twelve Friday the 13th films will be packaged together, (with seven of them making Blu-ray debuts) as a result of a strategic distribution alliance between Paramount and Warner announced last fall, granting Warner exclusive video distribution rights to over 600 Paramount titles. The set also includes a Friday The 13th Killer Extras Bonus DVD.

Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection Blu-ray

This intense 'slasher' series is one of the longest-running and most successful horror franchises in film history, surpassing the domestic theatrical box-office grosses of such legendary series as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film that turned psycho killer Jason Voorhees and his infamous hockey mask into a pop culture icon has also bested the horror competition as the #1 home entertainment seller, with total sales of $119.7M to date.

The 10-disc collection ($129.95 SRP) includes the twelve films on nine Blu-ray discs, as well as a killer DVD bonus disc full of special features on the making of the famous franchise. The must-own set will be presented in a collectible tin case with 11 hours of previously released special features and a 40-page soft cover book. The book is excerpted from Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th, a fan-favorite volume that's viewed as the ultimate memoir of the series, and highlights some of the 200 interviews, 600 photos, storyboards, concept art and more. Also included is a brand new, official Camp Crystal Lake embroidered Counselor Patch.

Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection also includes digital versions of all 12 films with UltraViolet, allowing viewers to download and instantly stream the films to a wide range of devices from computers and compatible tablets to smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.

One of the most frightening franchises in film history, Friday The 13th focuses primarily on the character of Jason Voorhees, who drowned as a young child at Camp Crystal Lake due to the inattentiveness of camp counselors. Many years later, the camp becomes the scene of a number of murders - all of which are either committed or motivated by the avenging Jason, who forever lurks at Crystal Lake with his finely-honed machete.

    Films in the Collection include:

    Disc 2 - Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

    Disc 3 - Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D (1982)

Disc 4 - Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) NEW TO BLU-RAY

    Disc 5 - Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) / Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) NEW TO BLU-RAY

Disc 6 - Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) / Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) NEW TO BLU- RAY

Disc 7 - Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993) / Jason X (2002) NEW TO BLU-RAY

    Disc 8 - Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Disc 9 - Friday the 13th (2009) (Theatrical Version and "Killer Cut" Extended Version)

Disc 10 - Killer Bonus DVD Disc

Easter Sunday Trailer Brings Horror to an Egg Hunt!

    Posted: 20 Jun 2013 07:10 PM PDT

The Bunny Man, rumored to be the Easter Bunny, is an urban legend originating from two incidents in Fairfax County Virginia in 1970, but has been spread throughout the Washington D.C. area. There are many variations to the legend, but most involve a man wearing a rabbit costume who attacks people with an axe on Easter Sunday! Horror icon Robert Z'Dar (Maniac Cop, Tango & Cash) returns to the big screen alongside Edward X. Young in the first trailer for this blood-soaked slasher flick, which finds Douglas Fisher returning in 2013 to finish the terror he began 24 years ago.

Production on Easter Sunday is currently under way in Virginia, and director Jeremy Moorehead is seeking additional funding through the Kickstarter crowd-funding platform. He explains why you should help.

"That is an excellent question - in fact, the best question. Why should you help us with our movie? Perhaps you're a horror fan who wants to see horror movies made by independent film makers. Maybe your passion is for the arts and you want to see creation wherever you can. Maybe you just love helping regular people live their dreams and making it a reality. Easter Sunday has already reached its pledge goal, so no need to sweat the man with no legs sitting on the overpass. Easter Sunday is coming, and the rest is just sweet cream on top of this horror sundae.

    Here's the official synopsis:

It's been 24 years since the deranged serial killer Douglas Fisher was executed by police on Easter night. This year, a group of hard partying teenagers not only raise some hell, but literally raise the dead! The teens accidentally conjure the spirit of Douglas Fisher... aka the bunny masked killer. These teens have until midnight on Easter to stop the evil bunny slasher, or he will tear their town and everyone in it into pieces. There will be no candy in your Easter basket, just the limbs and body parts of your family and friends.

Easter Sunday comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Robert Z'Dar.
