Mathew Jonson, a Canadian electronic musician based in Berlin, is easily recognizable on stage for his improvisational talent -- both as a solo artist, as Midnight Operator with his brother Hrdvsion, and as one part of the four-piece electronic act, Cobblestone Jazz.

Jonson's Dayz 12" released last fall is still receiving acclaim in electro circles and he'll likely be putting out more singles in the fall. Meanwhile, Cobblestone Jazz are in Berlin next month working on music and hoping to complete another album. Their gig during Sonar Festival in Barcelona marks the group's fifth anniversary.

Recently returning from a show at the Detroit Electronic Movement Festival, Jonson spoke with us about life in Berlin and how the scene there is changing. He performs tonight (June 2) at the Mutek Festival in Montreal with the Swedish duo Minilogue.

So I watched Prometheus... (Spoilers)

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 08:08 AM PDT

It really is beautifully shot and looks incredible on a 4k digital projector, but a few things bugged me...

  • The guy who's sole purpose on the mission seems to be to operate the mapping drones, who appears to be the only crew member with a portable display actually showing the map, is the only one who gets lost inside the alien structure, more than once.

  • On a couple of occasions, while looking at the giant 3D map, which clearly shows the location of all the crew members, people ask over the radio "Where are you?"

  • The way the biologist is such a fucking idiot when encountering an alien life-form?

  • The crew in general seems to have been pretty poorly chosen for such an expensive and important mission. Which kind of contradicts the viral video showing how closely they seem to have been AI evaluated during selection

  • That they seem to have plenty of camera feeds and telemetry coming from the crew's suits, but they are not recording any of it.

  • What's with the convenient Engineer holograms showing them everything they need to know? Why does it look like a primitive version of the tech David is using to spy on peoples dreams?

  • The way the ship captain and his officers decide to just commit suicide at the drop of a hat.

  • That Charlize Theron's character never got to be a bad ass, and died really stupidly, which brings me to:

  • When the alien ship crashes and rolls like a big wheel, they run away from it, along its path... All they had to do was run at a right angle?

  • Meredith is repeatedly shown to be a total control freak who isnt taking any fucking chances, even having a state-of-the-art robo-surgery installed in her escape habitat. But she doesnt have it programmed for female anatomy?

  • The proto-alien emerges from the Engineer full-grown, in every other alien movie, they emerge small and grow up? In fact the shot where the aliens head spike bursts out looks really stupid because its so large it looks like it's being pushed up through the floor.

  • After watching the trailer, I assumed that the alien ship in Prometheus was the same one that Ripley and crew later visit, but it cant be, because the pilot doesnt die in the control chair.

  • Which makes me wonder why Weyland/Yutani bother sending the Nostradamus and colony ships to the planet in the original movies, when they have the location of the Prometheus planet, which has many fully intact ships and who knows what else?

Do you think anything can/will beat AVATARs box office record?

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 09:14 AM PDT

I remember looking at Titanics box office record a few years ago and thinking nothing will ever come close to it. Then Avatar came along and grossed more than a billion dollars more than the previous record. Granted it was due to increase ticket prices for 3D and imax but still. Do you think a film could come along and beat it?
