Metric, 'Synthetica': Distilling a Decade of War, Collapse and Post-Millennial Tension

MetricJustin Broadbent

A decade ago, Ossington Avenue in Toronto's west-end was a crumbling street of dodgy garages and boarded-up business, sketchy strip clubs and bullet-ridden Vietnamese karaoke joints. In the years since it's resurrected itself into a bustling enclave of independently owned hipster bars, foodie restaurants and art galleries. This has caused the too-cool kids to complain about its popularity, despite the absence of corporate chains that mark other gentrified areas.

Of course, as the street pulled itself together, the rest of the world fell apart.

Needless to say, it's a poetically perfect place to find Metric's Giant Studios, considering the band's own rise over the same time span from a band of broken dreams to wildly popular and wildly independent success by chronicling the past decade's global turmoil.

Giant, co-owned by Metric's Jimmy Shaw and Death From Above 1979's Sebastien Grainger, is a throwback back to the street's pre-hipster days -- just an unremarkable brick building with no sign and battered blinds. But inside, amidst scattered instruments, recording gear and gold records, is where Metric made their latest longplayer, Synthetica.

Controversial veteran Canadian rocker Matthew Good is going worldwide.

The 40-year-old multiple Juno Award-winning musician has just signed a worldwide deal with Frostbyte Media, home to the likes of Nelly Furtado bestie Saukrates and Japanese metal legends Loudness. Almost 20 years into a career littered with multiple gold and platinum-selling albums in Canada, this will mark the first time Good will be afforded the proper chance to perform in a number of other countries.

"One of the big positive things for me was these guys are really kind of committed to going, well, we know that you do this here, but they're like, what about Australia? What about England? We know that you're not 25, but that doesn't mean that you can't go open for whomever in Australia acoustically, or in the UK, and then go back with a band," Good tells Spinner. "One of the big things was they're willing to underwrite tour support, which for me has never existed overseas.

What are some movies that you don't see talked about a lot, but really love?

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 09:46 AM PDT

I have a bunch, of course I love a whole lot of critically approved movies. But there are plenty of movies that have flown under the radar that I will always love.

-Dead Poets Society (good reviews, but never see anyone talk about it)

-Deja Vu w/ Denzel Washington

-AVP , loved both franchises and this movie just entertains me

-Ghost Town , love the humor in this movie

-Sherlock Holmes (i know, a popular movie but again don't see many people talk about it)

-Zombieland

-A Knight's Tale

-Angels and Demons

-Blood Diamond

-The Bourne Trilogy

-Ocean's 11,12,13

-I'm a sucker for any "based on a true story" sports movie: Glory Road, Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans, Miracle, We Are Marshall, Moneyball...

-Rundown w/ The Rock, one of my favorite movies to catch on TV

-Shanghai Noon/Knights w/ Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson (personally like these better than the Rush Hour movies)

-Source Code

There are many more but this is what I could think of off the top of my head. Again, popular movies, but generally not talked about. Any other movies you think deserve attention?

EDIT: Making this post not look like a jumbled mess.

EDIT 2: As a kid I loved The Borrowers and Mouse Trap
