Crocodiles Embrace Seediness of Berlin, Poppy Sound on 'Endless Flowers'

Marco Rapisarda

Among the many misfit night owls Crocodiles profess to have hung around with last summer in Berlin, where they recorded their forthcoming third album, Endless Flowers, there might have been a middle-aged dude named Helmut Katzenflugen.

In the howler of a press release bearing his byline, the possibly fictitious 43-year-old describes meeting the Crocs soon after they arrived in the German capital. It was serendipitous: Katzenflugen needed entertainment for Ficken 2000, the seedy nightclub he manages, and the the fuzz-loving fivesome needed a place to rehearse its new material. Just like that, the band had a 20-hour-per-week, Beatles-in-Hamburg-type gig.

So, how much of that -- and the comically short-lived Ficken residency Katzenflugen goes on to describe -- actually took place?

"It's 100 percent true," singer and guitarist Brandon Welchez tells Spinner, keeping a straight face as he and guitarist Charles Rowell sip coffee in New York City's Lower East Side.

Willem Dafoe Laments JOHN CARTER Box-Office Perfromance As Film Comes To Blu-ray And DVD

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 09:21 AM PDT

John Carter was a film which in many ways, suffered from an unprecedented amount of bad press and industry back-lash. This is a subject that's been dissected numerous times before so I'll avoid that here. Instead, we'll hear from actor Willem Dafoe about what he thinks derailed the film and what he thinks about a possible sequel--- On the film's inability to capture a wide-spread audience: Dafoe: "You don't like to publicly lament disappointments too much, but I'm still kind of scratching my head over it. For me, I thought 'John Carter' really captured something. It was very pure in its approach. It was classical. It wasn't hip and cool. It was really from the source, and I appreciate that." A possible reason why: Dafoe; ""In my experience, sometimes a movie just hits at the wrong time, gets the wrong press, or gets the wrong representation, and it gets misunderstood. Sometimes it's hard

Star Wars: Detours Is Deadwood in Space Says Rick McCallum

Prodcuer Rick McCallum reveals Star Wars Detours is like Deadwood in space

Last June, we reported that the live-action series Star Wars Detours was on hold for at least three years, due to its overwhelming budget. Producer Rick McCallum recently revealed that another problem facing the show is the adult nature of the stories, which he compared to the HBO Western series Deadwood in tone, and Avatar in scope.

"Our biggest problem is that these stories are adult. I mean, these are like Deadwood in space. It so unlike anything you've ever associated with George (Lucas) before in relation to Star Wars. These aren't for kids. I mean, we hope they'll watch, but it's not being targeted at 8-to-9 year old boys. The situation we have is that each episode - or if you put two hour long episodes together - is bigger than any film we've ever done. It's on the Avatar level and we'll only have about $5-6 million we can spend on each episode."

He also reiterated from the earlier report that they have 50 hours of scripted material ready to go, although the shows will still take some time to develop.

"They're all second draft scripts and it would probably take a year of prep before shooting would start, but that's because they're all very complex."

The producer also talked about the fragile state of television as a whole, and how that factors into this new series.

"Firstly, we've got television as we know it about to implode. You've got network TV, which is really where we should be because it has the dollars to pay for this and an audience, but you're burdened by the fact you only get 42 minutes for an hour because of commercials. And then you've got cable, which has the most provocative and daring programming, but has audiences of 1 or 2 million people. They also have a very limited amount of money they can spend without wanting some sort of say or control over the material, which is absolutely repugnant to us in terms of the way we work."

We reported in January that the series had the working title Star Wars: Underworld. Our story from last week about Kathleen Kennedy taking over as the head of LucasFilm revealed the show is now being called Star Wars Detours.

Wreck-It-Ralph Photos Featuring Q*bert, Coily, and Slick

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 10:42 AM PDT

Disney Pixar has released four new photos from Wreck-It Ralph, debuting in theaters November 2. John C. Reilly stars as the title character, a video game villain who has an existential crisis and wants to do good. Take a look at these photos featuring Ralph helping out classic video game characters Q*Bert and his former enemies Coily, Slick, and Ugg. We also get our first look at Sgt. Calhoun (Jane Lynch) of the action game Hero's Duty, who helps Ralph become an alien-fighting soldier. And Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a go-kart racer in the candy-themed game Sugar Rush.

The power strip seen above actually acts as Grand Central Station for the characters of Wreck-It Ralph, allowing them to get from one video game to the other when these machines are not in play. The inside of the power strip is seen in the Q*bert image above, which also reveals that Street Fighter characters Chun-Li and Zangief are part of this Arcade community.

John C. Reilly spoke about how he often wondered what his childhood toys were thinking, and how this movie expands the video game experience, like Toy Story before it.

"When I was a kid, I would wonder what was going on inside my G.I. Joes and other toys I was obsessed with. In the early '80s, when my expendable income were the quarters in my pocket, I played such first-generation games as Space Invaders, Asteroids and Donkey Kong. Wreck-It Ralph gives an Alice in Wonderland take on what happens when you enter the world of a video game."

About Jane Lynch's Sgt. Calhoun, director Rich Moore says she has a troubled past.

"Calhoun has one of the most tragic back stories ever. Her fiance was eaten at the alter on their wedding day after she forgot to do a perimeter check."

Sarah Silverman's Vanellope von Schweetz will drive a vehicle shaped like a high-octane dessert in a game based on Mario Kart. Rich Moore revealed the following.

"Sarah does the voice of a little kid as only Sarah could do. Ralph sort of becomes a big brother to her."

Wreck-It Ralph comes to theaters November 2nd, 2012 and stars John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch. The film is directed by Rich Moore.

JOHN CARTER & TARZAN: The Impact of the Former, News on the Latter

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 10:09 AM PDT

Speaking to Jim Sulio, president of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., the report raised the question of how impactful John Carter was on the science fiction genre. "He's referred to as the grandfather of science fiction, and it's because that story, 'The Princess of Mars' and the following books, had a seminal impact on the creation of 'Superman' – the concept of lower gravity allowing him to have super-strength and being able to fly, which is why Superman had to come from a different planet, Krypton," says Sulio. "It's all based on what Mr. Burroughs created in everyone's mind with a different gravity on a smaller planet. Then of course 'Star Wars' was significantly drawn on from Mr. Burroughs, including the landscapes and the creatures and all those things. I think that someone used the term that George Lucas 'plundered' the 'Mars' story to create 'Star Wars' – and with attribution: Lucas agreed
