Sweet Valley: Wavves Frontman Teams With Brother to Make Hip-Hop Beats

Sweet Valley Facebook

Sweet Valley is as much a musical project for Wavves frontman Nathan Williams and his younger brother Kynan as it is a living arrangement. Having spent the past four years crunching out punk-pop earworms in his main act, Nathan was looking to expand his musical horizons and after attending a show his brother put on, where Kynan Williams played a bunch of instrumental hip-hop beats, the two struck a deal.

"He asked me if I would move into his house and we made a trade," Kynan, real name Joel, tells Spinner. "I would do beats for him and that would pay for my rent."

Kynan has since set up a workspace in his brother's L.A. home, creating beats and applying his technical skills to Nathan's plethora of ideas. Sweet Valley's Stay Calm is the first of many albums that was a result of these working sessions, a collection of instrumental hip-hop tracks plastered with samples and meticulous producing.

Deluka, 'Never Alone' -- Song Premiere

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 01:00 PM PDT

DelukaJelle Wagenaar

Deluka was formed in the middle of the English countryside, but when the band's new wave sound brought them to tour the U.S., the vastness of American landscapes deeply affected their sound. After releasing Broken Sleeping Patterns in 2008 and You Are the Night in 2010, the band is back with the extremely physical Stranger Than Fiction.

Spinner staff recently had the pleasure of hearing cuts from the forthcoming album in our offices and the record sounds like nothing Deluka has done before. Produced by Dan the Automator (Gorrilaz, Kasabian), the group were able to realize the idea of "turning landscapes into soundscapes" that is at the heart of the new record.

Do you know any completists? You know, those guys or gals that have to buy every DVD in a franchise, or every comic in a run, or every Star Wars action figure ever made, no matter how bad or money-wasting it seems? Well, the makers of the cult horror comedy Thankskilling hate those people, and to intentionally irritate them, they've skipped the sequel, going straight to the worst known number in the franchise list, that big ol' 3! Yes, ThanksKilling 3 is coming to theaters this Thanksgiving, and its sure to make a couple of you itch in a hemorrhoid way. Today, we have the first official poster, along with some of the mock Part 2 posters that tease the non-existent film our Turkie goes searching for in this gruesome, gory throwback to puppet movies of yesteryear. This Week in Music History: October 7 - 13 -- Thom Yorke & Simon Cowell's Link, ZZ Top's Space Travel

We've been living with Radiohead for so long it's easy to take them for granted.

After all, who wouldn't want to forget that when the British band first came to America their song "Creep" was marketed directly to Beavis and Butt-head MTV slackers. Or that period where Thom Yorke had badly dyed blonde hair.

But then you remember they've also done oddly wonderful covers of Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy" and there was that whole Googly Minotaur thing and suddenly you're listening to The Bends again and going, "Why does this album get ignored?! It's brilliant!"

It has just dawned on us, however, that Radiohead might have a greater purpose -- to maintain the cosmic balance between good and evil.

Ratings: How Did Arrow, Nashville and Chicago Fire Do?

Nashville got off to a decent start Wednesday, but it was Arrow that really hit the ratings mark.

The CW superhero series drew 4 million viewers and a 1.3 in the adults 18-to-49 demographic, making it the network's most-watched series premiere since The Vampire Diaries' debut in 2009. Lead-out Supernatural (2.6 million, 1.0) saw a two-tenths bump.

Arrow also tied NBC's ailing comedy lineup, Animal Practice (3.9 million, 1.1) and Guys with Kids (4.2 million, 1.4), in total viewers in the 8 o'clock hour and in the 18-to-49 and 18-to-34 demos.

Vote: Which fall premieres won you over? Which flopped?

Meanwhile, ABC's Nashville bowed to ...
