Irrational Women… Ladies are you ok with this…?

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 09:40 AM PDT

So there is a romantic comedy cliché that drives me crazy. for example the film "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". Kate Hudson plays a woman who enters into a relationship with Matthew McCaughey in order to intentionally drive him crazy, in order to get him to break up with her in the allotted time. And her entire plan is motivated by the desire to publish her findings is a leading women's magazine. Matthew's character makes a drunken bar room bet with his buddies that he can get any girl in the bar to fall in love with him. Well the plot progresses, they're trying to drive each other crazy while actually falling in love and then comes the emotional conflict. It's revealed that their initial motives were less than honest. THEY BOTH LIED. But Kate's character is so immediately destroyed. How could he do this to her… and her "socially accepted and rational" response is to take another job and move away from the city. Why is what she did to him so easily dismissed? Really the bar bet with buddies is so drastically worse than her torturing him for 10 days and then publishing an article about it. So my question is this. Does this encouragement of irrational behavior sit ok with the ladies? I have to imagine that if I was a woman, the fact that I can be so often portrayed in films and television as emotional and irrational would drive me away from this genre of film. But as social standards suggest this is very much not the case. To the guys I ask, If you are Matthew's character is this film, would you ever chase down a woman that lied to you, tortured you emotionally, then put in all in the public forum for your humiliation. As for me, I am sorry, even for a woman like Kate Hudson that's a deal breaker. For me it's like another cliché that has a male and female who are so close to love but a minor misunderstanding drives them apart until it is finally and dramatically resolved. Real life as you're watching this with most guys we're going, "Why's he doing that, I would just tell her the truth and we'd move past this in twenty minutes." So the basic end result is that How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (And most other romantic comedies) teach us that, men and women are idiots that are completely unreasonable, overly sensitive and can't effectively communicate beyond the level of high school freshmen. and whatever they do, they do not take any responsibility for their actions. It's time for a change writers. There is so much genuine conflict in relationships why do we all need to be portrayed as borderline manic depressive in order to generate romantic plot lines.

P.S. If you want me to go into it… ask me why the movie "300" is one of my favorite romances of all time.

I keep it on my shelf in between Freaks (Browning) and The Forbidden Zone (Elfman).
