Sondre Lerche Ponders Pop Partnership, Works by 'Instinct and Pressure on New LP

Sondre LercheRuvan Wijesooria

Sondre Lerche doesn't exactly embody fast-and-loose with his music, but the Norway-born, New York-residing singer-songwriter made his new self-titled release in a hurry.

"We recorded and mixed the album in three weeks, and it felt really good," Lerche tells Spinner.

Working that way was largely a reaction to his previous album, 2009's 'Heartbreak Radio,' which was a more elaborately produced -- and time-consuming -- affair. This time, Lerche recorded 10 new songs live in the studio, with the intent of finishing as quickly as possible.

Lerche tells us about the change in approach on 'Sondre Lerche,' out now on Mona Records, the unifying power of a really good pop song and why collaborating with hitmakers Stargate isn't out of the question.

Let's get to the question on everyone's mind: how excited were you about Lady Gaga's album?

[Laughs] Very excited. I thought I would let her get her album out of the way before I bring on the blockbuster album of the season, which would be my album.

Blake Lively on Her Style... and Her Privacy

"Green Lantern" star Blake Lively sat down with "Extra" correspondent Renee Bargh to talk about her fashion sense -- and dealing with paparazzi tailing her and new beau Leonardo DiCaprio.

"We get into this job to do what we do, and the fact that there's a whole other life beyond that you're not asking for is comes with the territory," Lively said. "But you don't ever get used to it. You know, you just have to keep your head down and live your life and that's that." As for her innate style, the "Gossip Girl" star pointed to some classic fashionistas as her inspiration. "Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly... I love their sophistication." Lively's "Lantern" co-star Ryan Reynolds chimed in with a few tidbits he observed about the actress. "She would bake up a storm on the set and was such a comic book nerd," laughed Reynolds, who jokingly added, "And her dog has frosted tips. This girl's got it covered from top to bottom." "Green Lantern" glows in theaters June 17.

What are some movie impossibilities/inaccuracies you know of?

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:48 AM PDT

When I worked in maintenance, I learned how a fire sprinkler system works- there is a piece of wax that heats up and melts- causing the mechanism to spring open and let water through. All the movies that show a guy holding a lighter to one sprinkler and all of them going off lied to you! Only that one sprinkler would spray water.

I also recall a Mythbusters episode that showed how shooting a barrel of gas or propane wouldn't cause it to explode unless a high power weapon was used. What are some other ones you know of?

Sacha Baron Cohen has been spotted on the set of his upcoming comedy The Dictator, which is being directed by long-time collaborator Larry Charles, who last helmed Bruno for the comic-in-disguise. Based loosely on the best-selling Saddam Hussein novel 'Zabibah And The King', the story here revolves around a dictator who attempts to keep democracy out of the country he so lovingly oppresses. In the First-Look photo below, Sacha Baron Cohen is seen supporting the Red, White, and Blue colors of the country The Dictator so loves to hate.

Josh Duhamel Returns to All My Children

Josh Duhamel returns for a cameo role in All My Children

The ABC soap opera All My Children will air its final episode in September, after more than 40 years on the air. Before it goes off the air, though, the show will feature a cameo appearance from one of its now-famous alumni, Josh Duhamel.

The actor will reprise his role of con artist Leo du Pres, which he portrayed from 1999 to 2003. He was nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards during his run, winning for Best Supporting Actor in 2002. The character supposedly died in 2003, although his body was never discovered.

Josh Duhamel's episode is slated to air sometime in August. It isn't known if there are other alumni cameos in the works for the final episodes of the show. Aside from Josh Duhamel, other actors who got their start on the soap opera include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christian Slater, Kelly Ripa, and Kim Delaney.

EXCLUSIVE: Brian Cox Talks Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Brian Cox discusses Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I recently had the chance to speak with the immensely talented actor Brian Cox about his new medieval project Ironclad, which will be released on VOD formats June 8, and will hit theaters on July 8. I also asked him about his experience on the set of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which opens in theaters on August 5.

It seems he not only stars in this sci-fi adventure, but he also helped Rupert Wyatt land the directing gig, after working with the director on his feature debut, The Escapist.

Take a look at what Brian Cox had to say below, including his thoughts on Andy Serkis' performance, and a brief insight into his character.

"This is a film with somebody who I had worked with before, who is sort of a prodigy of mine, and probably one of the best young directors around, Rupert Wyatt. (Producer) Peter Chernin called me ages ago about Rupert Wyatt, asking me what I thought of him. I said, 'Well, he made a film The Escapist I was in, and I think he's one of the most visually interesting directors around.' He got the gig at Fox and he's still doing it. I'm supposed to see him in L.A. this week. He's working right up until the film gets reeled for the first time with an audience, a paying audience. It's a lot of CGI, it's quite a technical film. It's interesting because in the old days, they would do makeup on the actors for the chimpanzees, they would spend hours in the makeup chair. Now the CGI people can do all the makeup. It's great, but I like the old style. We have to move with the times. I think the performance of Andy Serkis is astonishing. He has become the king of motion-capture. It's astonishing. Really, the story is about the apes themselves. I'm the kind of corrupt element."

Hopefully we'll see more of Brian Cox in the next trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes before it debuts in theaters on August 5.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes comes to theaters August 5th, 2011 and stars James Franco, Brian Cox, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Tom Felton. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt.

EXCLUSIVE: Brian Cox Talks Ironclad

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:25 AM PDT

Brian Cox discusses his medieval adventure Ironclad

Actor Brian Cox discusses his role in Ironclad, working under harsh conditions in Wales, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and much more.

Brian Cox is an actor whose career I've always admired. After more than 20 years of toiling away in small parts in TV shows, TV movies, and short films, he originated the role of Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter in 1986. After his turns in Braveheart and Rob Roy in 1995, the movie roles kept coming in at an increasing pace, with everything from action-comedies (The Long Kiss Goodnight), police thrillers (Kiss the Girls), indie sensations (Rushmore), and even a zany police comedy (Super Troopers). Brian Cox hasn't stopped working since, with a string of diverse roles in the past 10 years too lengthy to list here.

His latest project is the medieval tale Ironclad, which will be available on video on demand (VOD) formats June 8, in advance of its theatrical release on July 8. I recently had the honor to speak with Brian Cox over the phone about his latest role. Here's what he had to say.

You have quite the stellar career playing a wide variety of characters. Can you talk about what first intrigues you about a project, especially something like Ironclad?

Brian Cox: It's the story, first of all. This one is an amazing story, and I hadn't known anything about it. It has a classical feel to it, and it reminded me of The Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai, because of these seven characters, which is a cross-reference to that. And the fact that it was a film which was being done in a particular location and a particular environment. I liked the idea of being in Wales, and I thought it was very interesting that they were filming it in Wales. A very wet Wales, as it turned out, some of the worst conditions ever.

Oh, really?

Brian Cox: Oh, yeah, but, actually, it added to the sense of medieval England. It was hard work. It was tough, but I had a very good feeling about it.

There was a big strive to capture the realism of this era. I read they built a full-scale replica of the Rochester Castle on the set.

Brian Cox: Yeah, that's right. They built that and, considering we were working with not a huge budget, I think they did remarkably well. They did some wonderful stuff, particularly the camera operators, who did some wonderful stuff. It was kind of down to them to make it look as if there were a lot more guys than were actually there. It had a lot of elements to it, which was very exciting.

Did you do any kinds of research to portray Albany? Did you go back and research this period in history?

Brian Cox: I've done a lot of classical plays, so I know a little bit. Years and years ago I played Henry II, in a TV series about the Plantagenet family, so I knew a lot about King John and his history, and the Magna Carta. There is a background about how they were basically the nouveau riche of their day. They were trying to establish a more constitutional monarchy, which took awhile, but they eventually got there. There were all those elements. Nowadays, research is very easy because you can just go to the internet.

I read that most of the supporting cast were actually re-cast. I was curious who was on board when you signed on, and if you could talk about getting to work with actors like James Purefoy and Paul Giamatti?

Brian Cox: It did shift. People like Bob Hoskins were supposed to be in it. In fact, I took over for Bob Hoskins, because I think Bob had to go in for an operation. It kind of became a big movable feat that they got this together. Then Paul Giamatti came on to play King John. It was a very flexible team. It was quite imaginatively put together, in terms of how the structure of the cast came up. We were on a very tight schedule and we didn't have a lot of leeway. We had to shoot in the conditions that existed. We couldn't just say, 'OK, we'll wrap now and pick it up tomorrow.' We were committed to a scene and we had to finish it.

Can you talk about working with your director, Jonathan English? How would you best describe his style?

Brian Cox: Well, Jonathan is one of these younger directors who are very savvy in putting films together. I think directors have to know how to produce, as well as direct, and he has producing skills. He directed, he had the vision of the piece, and put it all together. Because of the terrain, we had to make a lot of adjustments, and he was very relaxed about all that. There is a lot of free style in terms of the movement of the camera. Florian Emmerich, the camera operator who I had worked with on the Bourne films, he's one of the best, certainly one of the best Steadicam operators in the business. Jonathan is very much like John Schlesinger. He delegates various positions and pulls it all together. That's what he's very skilled at. He sees the people who has the strength, and there was one moment where it was very early and we were working with an HD camera, he was able to put this camera in various positions. There was no footage that was lost.

We posted the trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes the other day, and it got a great response. We only got a small glimpse at your character. Could you talk a bit more about him, and your experience on the set?

Brian Cox: This is a film with somebody who I had worked with before, who is sort of a prodigy of mine, and probably one of the best young directors around, Rupert Wyatt. I'm the kind of corrupt element.

Finally, what would you like to say to anyone who is curious about Ironclad about why they should check it out on VOD on June 8 or in theaters on July 8?

Brian Cox: I think it's a very good ride. I think it's terribly well done and it grips you, has a great story, and great performances.

Great. That's my time. Thanks so much. It was a pleasure talking to you. I'm a big fan of your work.

Brian Cox: Take care. Thank you.

You can watch the wonderful Brian Cox as Albany when Ironclad is released on VOD formats on June 8, or when it hits theaters on July 8.

Ironclad comes to theaters July 8th, 2011 and stars Kate Mara, Jason Flemyng, Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, James Purefoy, Mackenzie Crook, Derek Jacobi, Vladimir Kulich. The film is directed by Jonathan English.

The Dark Knight Rises Finds Anne Hathaway Injuring Stuntman!

Anne Hathaway injures stuntman on set of The Dark Knight Rises

Director Christopher Nolan is keeping the action down and dirty on the set of The Dark Knight Rises. Actress Anne Hathaway, who is playing Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman), got so carried away shooting a fight scene, she injured her opposing stuntman.

Apparently, Anne Hathaway was so lost in the moment, she shoved the butt of her gun full-force into the stunt actor's eye socket, turning half his face black and blue. An insider who was on set at the time had this to say.

"Anne got a bit carried away during a fight scene...He came away with a massive black eye. Anne was mortified."

The stunt actor remained "good natured" about the incident, with Anne Hathaway sending him an engraved silver pin that read, "Remember no one packs a punch like Anne." The Dark Knight Rises promises to have some of the best, most authentic fight scenes ever captured on film.

In other The Dark Knight Rises news, a local Londoner shot video on the Farringdon set, which offers a moving look at some of the locations we've already seen. You can check it out below.

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Southpaw Gets Director Antoine Fuqua

Eminem's boxing drama Southpaw gets director Antoine Fuqua

Director Antoine Fuqua is trading one hip-hop artist for another. The filmmaker has dropped out of the Tupac biopic to direct Southpaw, which has Eminem attached to star.

We first reported on the Tupac project back in February, when Antoine Fuqua signed on to direct. The producers were planning on a summer shoot, although those plans will likely have to be scrapped now.

Southpaw was written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. The story centers around a boxer who somehow manages to fight his way to a title shot, despite his personal life crumbling around him. We first reported on Southpaw in December, when DreamWorks bought Kurt Sutter's pitch.

It is said that Antoine Fuqua does not have a deal locked in for Southpaw yet. DreamWorks hopes to get the project shooting later this year.

Southpaw comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Eminem. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua.
