Madonna's W.E. Goes to the Weinstein Company

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:29 AM PDT

Abbie Cornish stars in Madonna's W.E.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to "W.E.," Madonna 's directorial debut of a feature film. W.E. is a romantic drama co-written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian, produced by Madonna and Kris Thykier and executive produced by Scott Franklin (Black Swan).

It stars Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch), James D'Arcy (An American Haunting), Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go), Natalie Dormer ("The Tudors"), Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), James Fox (Sherlock Holmes) and Laurence Fox ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age ").

The announcement was made by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein and President of Production Donna Gigliotti.

Spanning six decades, W.E. juxtaposes a contemporary love story with that of King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

"W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made. I've wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I'm looking forward to working with Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Company on this film," commented Madonna.

"Madonna has really come into her own as a filmmaker with W.E.," said Harvey Weinstein. "She's taken one of the most famous romances of the 20th Century and brought it to life in a smart, sexy and thoroughly modern way. It's a terrific addition to our US release slate."

Commented Donna Gigliotti, "The advance footage for W.E. was some of the most impressive I've ever seen. I can't wait for American audiences to have the opportunity to see this film."

The deal was negotiated for TWC by Harvey Weinstein, COO David Glasser and Michal Steinberg, Senior Vice President Business Affairs and Acquisitions; and by CAA, on behalf of the filmmakers.

SYNOPSIS

W.E. tells the story of two fragile but determined women - Wally Winthrop and Wallis Simpson - separated by more than six decades. In 1998, lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward's VIII's abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. But Wally's research, including several visits to the Sotheby's auction of the Windsor Estate, reveals that the couple's life together was not as perfect as she thought. Weaving back and forth in time, W.E. intertwines Wally's journey of discovery in New York with the story of Wallis (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D'Arcy), from the glamorous early days of their romance to the slow unraveling of their lives in the decades that followed.

W.E. comes to theaters in 2011 and stars Vera Farmiga, Abbie Cornish, James D'Arcy. The film is directed by Madonna.

Global Smurfs Day Poster

On Saturday, June 25, 2011, in celebration of the birthday of Peyo, the creator of The Smurfs (born June 25, 1928), Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation will coordinate events all over the world as part of Global Smurfs Day, a worldwide event in anticipation of the release of the Smurfs' trip to movie theaters, it was announced today by Marc Weinstock, president, Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures. Columbia Pictures' and Sony Pictures Animation's The Smurfs will be released in theaters in the U.S. on July 29, 2011.

Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, "There are few characters as iconic as The Smurfs - for more than 50 years, they have been icons of popular culture, appealing across generations. Peyo's creation endures, and that's why Global Smurfs Day is a fitting way to celebrate his birthday."

On Global Smurfs Day, as participants enjoy fun Smurf-related activities in cities worldwide, they will be invited and encouraged to come to the events in Smurf costume in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Records title for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour period in Multiple Venues. The events will be synchronized around the world - this will be the most Smurfs that have ever been gathered at the same time. To achieve recognition from Guinness World Records the global events must collectively add up to more than 2,510 Smurfs. Adjudicators from Guinness World Records&#174 will be on hand in 12 cities around the world as it is expected that hundreds of participants in each city will come to the event dressed as Smurfs (white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and body painted blue). While all are being asked to arrive at the event in head-to-toe Smurf costume, each event will have Smurfs hats and blue T-shirts available.

Among the cities participating in the record attempt as part of Global Smurfs Day are Brussels, Belgium (Peyo's home country); Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK. Events include a Smurfs Experience in London as The O2 is turned into The "O-Blue" and a family event at New York's "Smurf Street Blueport" (a/k/a South Street Seaport); also, Peyo's family will be on hand to join in the fun in their home country of Belgium.

In addition, there will be Global Smurf Day events in many other locations around the world. For example, in Spain, the village of J&#250zcar, in the province of Malaga - one of the famous White Towns of Andalusia, renowned for their characteristic whitewashed walls - will kick off the celebrations by painting the entire town blue for the occasion. In addition, "life-size" (that is, 7&#189-inch tall) Smurf figurines will inhabit Paris's Trocadero Terrace (in front of the Eiffel Tower), the main square in Reykjavik, Iceland, Bogot&#225, Colombia's El Dorado International Airport, and high-traffic areas in Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland. In Taiwan, the landmark Red House will be transformed into a "Blue House," populated by Smurf figurines. In Copenhagen, Denmark, the event will be at the Tivoli Gardens amusement park, where participants can enjoy face painting, dance-alongs, and more fun-filled events. And in Los Angeles, at Santa Monica Place, there will be a celebration of Peyo's birthday with Smurfy activities.

Kim K.'s $1M Wedding Payday

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:32 AM PDT

As Kim Kardashian says goodbye to the single life, she's making sure to cash-in along the way. Kim, Kris Humphries and her 20-carat rock were the cover story on People magazine last month, and the curvy reality star is reportedly set to make more than $1 million for exclusive coverage of her engagement and wedding, according to Page Six.

The weekly paid Kardashian $300,000 and made a second deal for her wedding coverage for a little over $1 million, although Kim's camp denies any deal has been reached.

Kim Lawyers Up and Threatens to Sue

According to sources, there have been concerns over whether the magazine will be able to recoup their investment. "People's Kim engagement and cover did well, but did not do as well as they hoped," a source revealed. "Over a million copies were sold, which is good, but not their best. And when you spend that much on a cover story, you expect it to sell."

A second insider added, "Some editors think the cheating scandal and the over-the-top ring and wedding could be a turn-off."

In Touch ran a cover this week with football pro Bret Lockett claiming he had an affair with Kim while she was dating Kris. Denying Lockett's claims, Kim threatened the athlete with a defamation suit, and TMZ reported today that Lockett admitted he had never met Kim in person.

A date for Kim and Kris' wedding has not been set.

Weinergate: More Racy Pics, Talk of Resignation

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:21 AM PDT

Sexting Congressman Anthony Weiner, who entered a treatment facility over the weekend, may finally be close to giving up his House seat, as yet another cache of embarrassing photos have surfaced.
anthony-weiner.jpg
The photos, courtesy of TMZ, show the congressman using his cell phone to take pics of himself in front of a mirror at the House of Representatives gym, posing in various forms of undress. A source close to Weiner told the Daily News he had resolved to stay in office, but with the unrelenting media coverage and demands by party leaders to step down, the troubled congressman realizes he may no longer have a choice. Dr. Drew says rehab stint "is very good news" for Weiner Weiner's decision to either stay in Congress or leave will be influenced by the advice he receives from those he trusts, including his mentor, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Schumer has said he is "heartbroken" over Weiner's implosion, but has stopped short of telling him to quit. Weiner also relies on his wife, Huma Abedin. She is currently in Africa with her boss, Secretary of State Clinton, but sources say Weiner thinks Abedin will stand by him, and wants him to stay in Congress. Abedin returns Wednesday, and some say Weiner, who is taking the next few days to recoup in rehab, will possibly make some career changes at that time.

Barry Manilow Explores the 'Dangerous' Side of Fame on '15 Minutes'

Barry ManilowStiletto Entertainment

The long-running hit machine that is Barry Manilow takes a bold step at age 67 with his new release, '15 Minutes,' a rocking concept album that follows the story of a pop singer who hits giddy highs and rock-bottom lows.

Spinner recently spoke to Manilow to discuss the perils of fame, his recovery from tumors and why he's not going to Vegas to die.

We'll ask you the question you ask on the album: Fame -- is it worth it?

That's exactly not right. The quote you're looking for is on the cover -- "Fame -- can you take it?"

But there's also a lyric that asks, "Is it worth it?"

Well, I say it's worth it if you're doing it for the right reasons. I hear some of these young people saying "I want to be famous," and I clench up. You need to do what you believe in. Do it because you can't not do it. If you do it for money, applause, or to be famous, that's dangerous. If you do it because you can't not, whatever your field, you have a better chance of having a happy life.

John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman Lend Voices to Wreck-It Ralph

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 10:19 AM PDT

John C. Reilly will provide the voice of Wreck-It Ralph

Some of us are born to be bad, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy-winning director Rich Moore (TV's The Simpsons, Futurama) take moviegoers on a hilarious, video-game-hopping journey in Wreck-It Ralph, the story of an arcade game Bad Guy determined to prove he can be a Good Guy. Produced by Clark Spencer (Lilo & Stitch, Bolt) and featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch, the CG comedy adventure will hit theaters on Nov. 2, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D in select theaters.

Says Moore, "I love the idea of a very simple 8-bit video game character struggling with the complex question: 'isn't there more to life than the role I've been assigned?' In his quest for the answer, we journey with our hero through three visually distinct video game worlds. It's unlike anything anyone's seen before, and I'm thrilled to be to creating it here at Walt Disney Animation Studios."

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan-win a medal-but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it's "Game Over" for the entire arcade?

Wreck-It Ralph comes to theaters November 2nd, 2012 and stars John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch. The film is directed by Rich Moore.
