Anti-Flag Feel 'Let Down' by the Obama Administration -- NXNE

Anti-FlagOllie Millington, Redferns

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pa., Anti-Flag released their first split seven-inch in 1993, going on to Fat Wreck Chords superiority, a brief stint on major label RCA, and a return to indie punk turf with their most recent full-length, 2009's 'The People or the Gun.' Outspoken and politically charged, Anti-Flag have always taken an aggressive activist role in their music and performances, working regularly with groups like Amnesty International and PETA, while preaching themes of anti-homophobia, anti-misogyny and anti-racism from the stage.

Recently, vocalist and bassist Chris #2 began hitting the road hard with a new side project, White Wives (which also includes Anti-Flag guitarist Chris Head), while also recording a seven-inch of old-school hardcore with a second new band, Wharf Rats. Somewhere between that, a European Anti-Flag tour, and a stint at this year's NXNE, Spinner caught up with #2
to chat about Obama and X-rated tweets.

Given how active you've been recently with side projects, has there been any progress towards new Anti-Flag material?

Actually, we've been writing the entire time. It's kind of cool, because we own our own studio, so we have the ability to flesh out ideas and then come back to them. Even when we're just rehearsing for tour, if someone has an idea, we're always running through the studio. So it's just a matter of hitting "record" to capture that idea. We actually have ten or eleven songs already written. Some of them are about 80 percent tracked, some are 100 percent tracked. Most are 30 percent tracked.

Tanika Charles Has a 'Real Problem With Frank Ocean' -- NXNE

In the year since Tanika Charles released her 'What? What! What?!' EP, the Toronto-based R&B singer has been playing show after show around the city. But, as her performances get bigger, Charles maintains that it's the small club shows that best match the vibe of her soulful, spirited music. "You can connect with the audience so much more when you can actually see them," she tells Spinner. "It gets really hot and sweaty, and that's the best." And her set-up is only going to get sweatier: Charles' is currently working on her next album, due in the fall, which will be recorded live in the studio. Spinner caught up with Charles to talk about performing at NXNE, her angry alter ego Ms. Chawlz and her "real problem" with Frank Ocean.

Tell me about this album that's coming out.

Right now I'm in the studio all the time working on demos. It'll be a live album, so everything's going to be recorded with a band off the floor. This is a bit different than the EP, which I worked on with producers from around the city, so it's exciting for me because it's going to have that really pure, thick, heavy, sexy Motown feel to it.

Internet singing sensation Rebecca Black has removed her popular music video "Friday" from YouTube.
rebecca-black.jpg
The wildly viral video was pulled offline by Black's lawyers, who accused the producers, Ark Music Factory, of copyright infringement and unlawful exploitation of the aspiring pop star's publicity rights, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 13-year-old recently told "Extra" that she was wowed by the hundred-million views of her "Friday" video. "It's weird. I'm still trying to process, is that really MY video?" The dispute over which party owns the rights to the song will go to court if the contract disagreement cannot be resolved. Earlier today, a "Director's Cut" version of the song was posted on YouTube, but the status of the original is currently unknown.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea Monsters lands director Thor Freudenthal

Director Thor Freudenthal has signed on to direct Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Sea Monsters for 20th Century Fox.

We reported back in March that screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have come aboard to adapt the screenplay, which is based on Rick Riordan's second novel in the Percy Jackson series. Chris Columbus, who directed Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief, is on board as a producer.

20th Century Fox has also exercised the option on star Logan Lerman, which means he will reprise his role as the title character. The story for this sequel revolves around the title character and his new friends, who journey under the sea to find the mythical Golden Fleece, and rescue their kidnapped friend.

It is believed that Fox wants to move quickly on this sequel, in hopes to release it in 2012. The first movie, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief took in $87 million at the domestic box office, and an additional $137 million worldwide.

Rick Riordan wrote five books in the Percy Jackson series, along with numerous spin-offs which could also be tapped for future movies.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Sea Monsters comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Logan Lerman. The film is directed by Thor Freudenthal.

Weiners Head for The Hamptons

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 10:49 AM PDT

Following the Congressman's resignation on Thursday, Anthony Weiner was mobbed by photographers and the media as he returned to his Queens apartment. Minutes later, he and his pregnant wife, Huma Abedin, got into a car holding a weekend bag, and escaped the madness by leaving Manhattan.

anthony-weiner.jpg

The power couple headed for The Hamptons, stopping briefly at a supermarket in Manorville, Long Island along the way. Weiner reportedly sang along to a '50's song that was playing inside the store, while America continued to talk about his resignation. President Obama appeared on "GMA," where he shared his thoughts on Weiner's future. "I wish Representative Weiner and his lovely wife well," Obama said. "I'm confident they'll refocus and they'll end up being able to bounce back."

Meet Benjy Bronk, the Guy Who Heckled Weiner

When Weiner's vacation is over, perhaps he'll make a career move to television; he's been offered a guest spot as himself on HBO's "Entourage." Adult publication Penthouse also asked if Weiner would be interested in working for them.

It's unclear what Mr. Weiner plans to do next, as his $150K job is now gone. He and Abedin have two homes, one in Washington D.C. and one in New York City. The Daily Mail reports that Weiner's financial disclosure forms reveal $10-15,000 in credit card debt. And there's a baby on the way.

The Pharcyde Learn How to Merge the Past With the Present at NXNE

The Pharcyde's Slimkid3Andrew H. Walker, Getty Images

"You know, I mostly just can't wait," Slimkid3 (aka Tre Hardson) of California rap pioneers the Pharcyde tells Spinner, when asked about the band's upcoming appearance at NXNE in Toronto. "I'm excited! I want to be like, 'Check this out!' I'm getting ahead of myself."

There are two reasons why reunions happen, and while you can never discount one of them -- money -- as being the motivating factor, it has to warm a fan's heart to hear the genuine enthusiasm coming down the line from Slimkid3 as he kicks it at his home in Portland, Ore. The authors of undisputed rap classics like 1992's 'Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde' and 1995's J-Dilla-produced 'Labcabincalifornia' are getting ready to blow minds at a rare reunion show at NXNE, alongside peers Digable Planets. The show takes place on Sunday, June 19 at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Three of the four original MCs -- the current group is Slimkid3, Bootie Brown and Imani, minus Fatlip -- will no doubt give hits like 'Passin' Me By,' 'Runnin' and 'Drop' a long-overdue re-airing, though artists like Kanye West and OutKast have been keeping their legacy alive, via consistent shout-outs. Reconstituted and enthusiastic, the group is ready to prove why they deserve all that high-profile name checking.

Ever since Darren Aronofsky dropped out of directing The Wolverine, the big question has been, "What is he going to do instead?"

Well, while he preps for his epic biblical retelling Noah, he is going to helm the pilot episode of HBO's latest drama series Hobgoblin.

Hobgoblin is a fantasy adventure that follows a group of con men and magicians during World War II, who use their skills to battle the supernatural forces unleashed by Hitler. Michael Chabon (John Carter) wrote the pilot script alongside his wife Ayelet Waldman.
