Iron Man 3 Moves to Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Iron Man 3 starts production in Fort Lauderdale, Florida October 1

The Wilmington, North Carolina portion of Iron Man 3's shoot is winding down this month, with production shifting to Fort Lauderdale, Florida starting October 1. Here are some excerpts from the press release issued by the Greater Fort Lauderdale organization.

"Greater Fort Lauderdale is on the alert for an extraordinary group of visitors from Marvel Studios, including an invincible super hero. Broward County will welcome cast and production crew beginning Oct. 1 for the third and final installment in the solo superhero saga Iron Man 3. The Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Office of Film & Entertainment announcement of the blockbuster production will include locations in Broward County's Dania Beach, and other neighboring South Florida communities.

"We have had two very exciting back to back years of major film production in Greater Fort Lauderdale - we rocked with Rock of Ages last summer with Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin. Now we have the marvelous Marvel comic book hero," said Noelle Stevenson, Film Commissioner, Broward Office of Film & Entertainment. The Iron Man 3 cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau. "Of significance is that the filmmakers can conveniently shoot a variety of landscapes here, from city skyline to 23 miles of pristine sun-splashed beaches to nature unleashed in the Everglades," Stevenson noted.

Greater Fort Lauderdale's campaign to showcase its production-friendly attributes is paying off with the attraction of millions of dollars of film, TV, commercials, print and music video work. The county provides impressive added value and incentives to keep productions on target and on budget, including no permit fees, dedicated film-friendly hotels and community, professional studio and production offices, and the Preferred Production Pass (P3) which offers special values at area attractions, restaurants and film and entertainment vendors.

It isn't known how long production is expected to stay in the Florida city at this time.

Iron Man 3 comes to theaters May 3rd, 2013 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau. The film is directed by Shane Black.

PS I Love You Facebook

Type "PS I Love You" straight up into Google and you'll get a neck-and-neck search results fight between the Kingston, Ontario band and 2007 Gerard Butler-Hilary Swank movie of the same name. Those search results could get far more confusing very soon.

We catch up with PS I Love You hanging outside Toronto's Mod Club Theatre. Later that evening, the two-man band will showcase at Festival Music House, the invite-only three-day event designed to connect Canadian musicians with music supervisors, producers and actors in town as part of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF.).

With a stellar performance tonight, the young band might get a song placed in a summer blockbuster. Who knows, they might even get to hobnob with A-list celebrities?

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, an introduction

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 07:45 AM PDT

It was in the mid-nineties, and this haunting trailer started appearing on VHS and DVDs. City of Lost Children was such a bizarre breath of fresh air. It didn't seem like a foreign movie, it seemed like an alternate reality movie that just happened to be in French. I think I had a crush on Miette instantly. Not to mention an incredible fascination with Ron Perlman.

The movie is a foolish risk, really. A 1995 $18 million art-house French movie? It was a labor of love- inventive down to the set pieces, deliberately placed shadows, steampunk aesthetics, and fantastic creatures. Notice the conjoined twins that smoke from one head and exhale through the other, and scratch each others' arms. The flea circus. The cyclops.

This being the era when you had to pay by the hour for internet access, read a Leonard Martin movie guide, or just wait for a DVD to tell you about it- his earlier work "Delicatessen," went unknown to me for some time.

Then came Alien: Resurrection. Just like Guillermo Del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and so many other foreign directors- Jeunet was offered to direct an American sequel to an already successful franchise. To most people, Alien 4 was unwatchable garbage. I find it entertaining, but it's certainly no watershed feat of filmmaking. There are also some severe cringe-worthy scenes. I'd like to blame producers for that one, but I'm biased.

Then came his best known movie, and one of Reddit's favorites- Amelie. There's not much I can say about this movie that hasn't already been said. It's just a shotgun blast of creative characters and scenarios. It's like Michel Gondry and Wes Anderson combined to make a romantic comedy. The cinematography is gorgeous. The music is amazing.

A Very Long Engagement - an Audrey Tautou historical romance with appearances from Marion Cotillard and Jodie Foster. Great reviews, fantastic movie, although largely forgotten by most because (I think) it didn't push the boundaries of wackiness that City of the Lost Children and Amelie did. It's still a wonderful movie though. Can't say the trailer is any good though, looks like just another pretentious foreign love story, but it's really much more than that.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Micmacs - but it failed to please most Jeunet fans. Personally, I loved it, but I can understand its detractors. I think it's one of his most accessible movies, though, since it's super-quirky, a bit light on material, and carried by a series of vastly creative sequences.

I wish he had followed the career path of Guillermo Del Toro, and made more big-budget Hollywood material. Oddly enough, they both started out using Ron Perlman, since that son of a bitch can speak Spanish and French fluently enough to star in foreign movies.

Wreck-It Ralph full Theatrical Trailer Released!

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 09:31 AM PDT

I just saw The Possession. What other movies have shocked you by just how much they live up to genre cliches? [Spoilers]

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 09:18 AM PDT

So, The Possession... yeah...

Let's go down the list of what all the movie did:

Girl finds creepy box that won't open in a yardsale.

Oh, but girl somehow finds a way to open the box.

Girl looks inside and finds a bunch of creepy stuff but keeps it to herself because why should the parents know.

Speaking of parents, they're going through a divorce. Shocking I know, and instead of recognizing the fact that their daughter has been eating for 2 and has become obsessed with the demon box to the point of sitting in a room full of moths, the divorce is to blame and all she needs is a little counseling. Mom hates Dad and is getting together with a doctor, Dad is too busy for the kids, yada, yada, yada.

So, the behavior shifts are explained, creepy happenings swept under the rug, until something breaks the camel's back and they figure out 'you know, maybe having to spend weekends with Dad isn't just what's causing all of this'. Maybe it's that creepy box with the tooth in it.

So time to go the local religious institution, this time the Jews get the call up. But wouldn't you know it, they can't help, ask God. Gee thanks. But wait! There just happens to be a young religious member willing to break ranks.

So exorcism starts, turns out the demon doesn't like that and beats everyone up only to flee into the morgue. Turns out when something is dripping on you from above, slowly looking up at it doesn't make it go away. So, good guys win, demon's reimprisoned, but wouldn't you know it, despite being thoroughly beaten and exorcised, it still has enough power to get away. That ending was one of the stupidest in recent memory.

And the thing is, all of those cliches could have been overlooked if they had tried at least something slightly innovative. But they didn't.

So that's my rant. What movies have you been surprised by just how little they tried to move away from the cliches of their respective genres?
