Watched "The Mist"...the last Movie Frank Darabont directed before making "The Walking Dead" the other day...

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 10:58 AM PDT

And who's in there but Andrea, Carol and Dale (Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride and Jeffrey DeMunn ) from The Walking Dead! I knew that Darabont had worked with DeMunn on "The Green Mile" & "Shawshank Redemption" before.

Cool piece of trivia... Melissa McBride had worked primarily as a commercial casting director in Atlanta, GA. from 2000 until, in 2010, she was unexpectedly offered the role of Carol Peletier in AMC's The Walking Dead; McBride had worked with the show's creator Frank Darabont briefly, three years prior, when she was cast for a small supporting role in his feature film "The Mist". http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564350/

Will the Hobbit trilogy have any epic battles?

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 10:55 AM PDT

Seeing all those huge epic battles in the LOTR trilogy was memorizing, but it looks like the hobbit will be a toned down in that department? I know the final battle will be the battle of 5 armies, and its not even THAT big in the book. Other than that what can we expect?

The Sally Potter film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival followed by a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival. Film will also screen Oct. 8 as part of the prestigious New York Film Festival. The film also stars bright newcomer Alice Englert, Alessandro Nivola, Christina Hendricks, Timothy Spall, Oliver Platt, and Annette Bening. A24 plans on doing a qualifying run of the film in 2012 for awards consideration followed by a theatrical release in early 2013.

A24 says: "We fell in love with Ginger & Rosa. We've been fans of Sally Potter's for a long time. She has crafted a touching, heartfelt, and extraordinary work anchored by an absolutely incredible performance by Elle Fanning which already has a tremendous amount of love from audiences and journalists alike. We look forward to bringing the film to a wide audience and showing the world one of the best performances of the year."

Of the partnership Sally Potter says, "I am very excited to join forces with this new, dynamic company whose passion for movies, focused energy and bold imagination make it the ideal home for Ginger & Rosa."

Ginger & Rosa was produced by Christopher Sheppard and Andrew Litvin for Adventure Pictures and marks Sally Potter sixth time behind the camera since splashing onto the scene with Orlando.

FILM SYNOPSIS:

London,1962. Two teenage girls - Ginger & Rosa - are inseparable. They skip school together, talk about love, religion and politics and dream of lives bigger than their mothers' domesticity. But the growing threat of nuclear war casts a shadow over their lives. Ginger (Elle Fanning) is drawn to poetry and protest, while Rosa (Alice Englert) shows Ginger how to smoke cigarettes, kiss boys and pray. Both rebel against their mothers: Rosa's single mum, Anoushka (Jodhi May), and Ginger's frustrated painter mother, Natalie (Christina Hendricks). Meanwhile, Ginger's pacifist father, Roland (Alessandro Nivola) seems a romantic, bohemian figure to the girls. He encourages Ginger's 'Ban-the-Bomb' activism, while Rosa starts to take a very different interest in him. As Ginger's parents fight and fall apart, Ginger finds emotional sanctuary with a gay couple, both named Mark (Timothy Spall and Oliver Platt), and their American friend, the poet Bella (Annette Bening). Finally, as the Cuban Missile Crisis escalates - and it seems the world itself may come to an end - the lifelong friendship of the two girls is shattered. Ginger clutches at one hope; if she can help save the world from extinction, perhaps she too will survive this moment of personal devastation.

Ginger & Rosa comes to theaters November 2012 and stars Alessandro Nivola, Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks, Timothy Spall, Annette Bening, Oliver Platt. The film is directed by Sally Potter.

SUMMER BOX OFFICE RECAP: Comic Book Movies Rule The World

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 11:35 AM PDT

The box office this summer wasn't exactly amazing as many were hoping it to be. Despite some huge hits, a lot of films ended up with disappointing numbers. There is a good news for us who love comic books and comic book movies though. Three big CBMs opened this summer, and all three managed to make a lot of money. More below. May 4th, 2012. That was the US release date of the biggest movie of this year (so far) and the third highest-grossing movie of all-time. Of course, I'm talking about The Avengers, a Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios' superhero spectacle with great characters that we have been following in their own films since 2008. The Avengers opened with staggering $207 million in its opening weekend, setting a new record. The film didn't overperform just in North America. It was a monster at the international box office too, grossing $891 million

Sean Lowe has been named the next star of The Bachelor, People reports.

Lowe, 28, quickly became a fan favorite on Emily Maynard's season of The Bachelorette before getting the boot just prior to the season finale.  "I wanted it to be you so bad," she told him at the time of his elimination. "I thought it was the most emotional, heartfelt goodbye we've ever had," host Chris Harrison told TVGuide.com at the time.

Emily went on to choose Jef Holm over Arie Luyendyk Jr; the two are now engaged.

[/r/48hrGiveAway] 5 new best-sellers being given away (AVENGERS, PROMETHEUS, CABIN IN THE WOODS, ETC)!

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 10:36 AM PDT

Submit your name here to be entered into the drawing.

Please upvote and/or comment for exposure.

This will end on September 27th, 12:00PM PST. These are for Region 1 copies ordered from Amazon. If you live outside of North America, I'll do my best to cover SH&H for you - but cannot promise to do so in every instance (I don't know the cost of shipping to the Antarctica, for example.)

I'm giving away one free movie on DVD or Blu-Ray (shipped via Amazon) to one randomized winner. For every 500 names entered, I will give away one more additional movie up to a total of (5). The first winner selected will receive first dibs on selecting a Blu-ray or DVD, second winner gets second pick, etc etc. Winner's can select a movie from the following list:

Possible Prize: One copy of Marvel's The Avengers (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)

Possible Prize: One copy of The Cabin In The Woods [Blu-ray + Ultra-violet Digital Copy]

Possible Prize: One copy of The Hunger Games [2-Disc Blu-ray + Ultra-Violet Digital Copy]

Possible Prize: One copy of Snow White and the Huntsman (Extended Edition)* from Amazon.

Possible Prize: One copy of Prometheus (Blu-ray/ DVD + Digital Copy) which would be pre-ordered for the person who wins.

BUT I DON'T HAVE A "(BLU-RAY/DVD)" PLAYER?! If you win, you can select BLU-RAY or DVD.

It's pretty simple, all you have to do is submit your Reddit name to this Google Doc form (so that it's easier for me to keep track of who enters). In the interest of fairness, though I cannot track it, please only submit one of your Reddit user accounts and only submit your Reddit name once. If the winner is an account with no link and/or comment karma, or created within the time limit of the contest, they will be ineligible to enter. I do sort by name at the end of the contest to see if anyone entered the same name twice, so please don't try to cheat.

I pulled these entries off the best-selling list of Amazon here, if you have a suggestion for a newer best-selling or upcoming movie you'd like to see given away, feel free to let me know!

I've done this over at /r/Community with great success .

I repeated this same contest over at /r/Dexter also with great success.

Finally, /r/TheWalkingDead jumped in on the fun and it was also successful! You can visit the original submission here.

/r/48hrGiveAway is for questions, concerns, or suggestions on what to do a "48hr Give Away" on. Links are also submitted to all previous and current giveaways that have occured so that you can see a history of what has been given away, and what hasn't!

There are few things that drive the film critic community to greater heights of betizzied rapture than the employment of metanarrative techniques. Wayne Wang and Paul Auster beat Charlie Kaufman to the punch.
