Pop Montreal 2012, Day 3: YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN Debut Heavy New Opera

YAMANTAKA Facebook

Friday night at Pop Montreal saw quite a few big acts filling venues from the highly anticipated David Byrne and St. Vincent at Eglise St. Jonh Baptiste to rapper Lil B making a rare Canadian stop at Club Soda. But Polaris Music Prize followers would've most likely had their eye on the debut of short lister YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN's new and improved rock opera entitled 33 // .

Having performed a demo version of this show once before in Toronto earlier this year, drummer Alaska B explained in an interview that the "fairly hastily" written original production was merely 50 percent done at the time, but Friday night's debut was close to fully realizing the entire operatic piece.

A metal opera that combines Buddhist and Christian mythologies, 33 // fuses the stories of Buddha versus Devadatta and Jesus versus Judas. Split into two acts, the first focuses on that storyline showing the protagonist, SisterBrother, an aging drag queen that wants to leave her position as Mother of "Club 27." Then enters Diva Data, who tries hard through a number of attempts to murder SisterBrother. Soundtracked by YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN, this first part clocks in at exactly 33 minutes, using music, visuals and live performances with dancing, acting and lip-syncing to create a multimedia work of art drastically evolved from its earlier Toronto incarnation.

Carrie Birth Certificate and Banner

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 09:47 AM PDT

MGM has launched the official Facebook page for Carrie, a reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloe Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. So far, this new page has offered up the first viral banner and a copy of Carrie's birth certificate. Now, maybe MGM can cook one up for Barack Obama and end the debate!

I just saw Terminator 2 for the first time

and HO-LY SHIT! That was without a doubt the best action/sci-fi movie I've ever seen!!! I don't know why I kept putting off watching this (I'm 29) but I thought it was just one of those over-hyped movies.

I haven't been this excited after watching a film in years. In fact, I'm going to watch it again now

I really like Roger Ebert's review for The Village

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 07:45 AM PDT

"The Village is a colossal disappointment, a movie based on a premise that cannot support it, a premise so transparent it would be laughable were the movie not so deadly solemn ... To call the ending an anticlimax would be an insult not only to climaxes but to prefixes. It's a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It was all a dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore."
