Director Sidney Lumet Passes Away at 86

Sidney Lumet passes away at 86

Legendary director Sidney Lumet, the man behind such classic films as 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, and Network, passed away Saturday morning in his Manhattan home at the age of 86. The cause of death was lymphoma.

Sidney Lumet was a technical genius known for his ability to get Oscar-worthy performances out of his actors. A thick social commentary runs throughout the late director's oeuvre, as he was an artist whose life goal was to examine the consequences of prejudice, corruption, and betrayal. Often compared to his contemporary Martin Scorsese, Sidney directed more than forty movies in his lifetime, most of which were set in New York City.

Lumet began his career as an actor on Broadway at a very young age, appearing alongside such icons as Yul Brynner and Eli Wallach. He made his stage directing debut in 1955, and then went onto direct for CBS, helming numerous episodes of both Danger and You Are There.

He made his directorial debut with the 1957 classic 12 Angry Men, which was nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay Oscars. He would later direct the late Marlon Brando in The Fugitive Kind, and made a name for himself throughout the 60s with films such as Fail-Safe and A Long Day's Journey Into Night.

He found great commercial success in 1973 and 1975 with Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, two films that propelled Al Pacino to stardom, and the later of which garnered six Academy Award nominations. It is perhaps his 1976 masterpiece Network that is most remembered, having won four Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. His very next project was The Wiz, which reimagined the The Wizard of Oz with an all-black cast. The movie was a substantial bomb, proving that Sidney Lumet wasn't prefect.

The director continued working throughout the last three decades, directing modest hits like Power and Running on Empty. His last appearance as an actor was in the 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate, and his last film was 2007's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke.

Though his films had won numerous Academy Awards, Sidney Lumet himself never received one for directing. In 2005, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with an Honorary Award.

Sidney Lumet is survived by his wife since 1980, Mary Gimbel, his stepdaughter Leslie Gimbel, his two daughters Amy Lumet and Jenny Lumet, his stepson Bailey Gimbel, nine grandchildren and a great grandson.

Official Title For Deadpool Already Revealed?

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:26 AM PDT

Following the reports of Twentieth Century Fox tapping first-time director Tim Miller to helm their long-productive Deadpool cinematic adaption, the official title for the spin-off may have been overlooked. While the initial report mentioned it, in a recent preview of Production Weekly, the name re-listed: X-Men Origins: Deadpool Evidently used to bring aware that it's story from the "X-Men" saga, as well show it's following X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which featured Ryan Reynolds' big-screen debut of the character, it very well could be only tentative, being that an official release date has yet-to-be announced. Therefore, don't be shocked if another title appears soon. Though, Deadpool sits fine with me. Anyhow, while it's been reiterated that this spin-off wouldn't include initial references to Wolverine origins or the X-Men at all, and if so, only by mocking & poking fun at, what do you think of X-Men Origins: Deadpool for the title?

Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish Recently Handed In The Second Draft Of The Ant-Man Script

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:08 AM PDT

It isn't much, but Joe Cornish revealed this weekend at Kapow-Con (Via BLEEDING COOL) that he and Edgar Wright recently handed in the second draft of their script for Ant-Man. Here is an excerpt from BLEEDING COOL's report: Speaking this afternoon at Kapow, Joe Cornish has revealed that he and Edgar Wright delivered the "second draft" of Ant Man just two days ago. That's one more hurdle jumped – or if I know Wright and Cornish, leapt. Ant-Man will be directed by Edgar Wright, but currently has n release date or actors signed on for any roles. We can most likely expect Ant-Man news some time after Marvel Studio's big superhero team up movie, The Avengers. Special thanks to CBM's own Skinny Glasses for the image used in the article. The Hangover Part II Loses Liam Neeson

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:08 AM PDT

Liam Neeson dropped from The Hangover Part II

In what has become a revolving door cameo meant to keep us on our toes, director Nick Cassavetes is replacing Liam Neeson in the role of a Bangkok tattoo artist original meant for Mel Gibson as part of the storyline in The Hangover Part II.

As director of this anticipated summer sequel Todd Phillips explains it, the plot of The Hangover Part II is hinged on a missing person mystery, and follows the exact structuring of its predecessor. Each scene is interlocking, and when Phillips had to cut the scene right before the moments with Liam Neeson, it made no sense to keep that cameo in the film.

Todd Phillips had decided to re-shoot the scene so that it made sense within the context of getting his Wolf Pack (Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms) from one location to the next. A problem arose when Phillips discovered that Liam Neeson was preoccupied in London, shooting Clash of the Titans 2.

With The Hangover Part II set for release on Memorial Day Weekend, Todd Phillips had to reshoots the scenes quickly, and turned to his old friend Nick Cassavetes for help.

Here is what Todd Phillips had to say about the matter.

"We were in a complete time crunch so I called up Nick and asked if he would do the part. He came in and crushed it and that is the scene that you will ultimately see in the film. [I'm excited for everyone] to see the film. It turned out great."

There is a chance that none of this is true, and it is all a ruse to surprise you with an actual cameo that hasn't been spoiled on the Internet. And if it is all true, Liam Neeson's deleted cameo will make for a nice special feature on the upcoming Blu-ray release.

The Hangover Part II comes to theaters May 26th, 2011 and stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Jamie Chung, Paul Giamatti, Nick Cassavetes. The film is directed by Todd Phillips.
