Polaris Prize Names Arcade Fire, Austra, Weeknd and More to 2011 'Short List' Posted: 06 Jul 2011 02:12 PM PDT Gus Stewart, Getty Images It was the other albums on the list -- now whittled down from 40 to 10 titles -- that prompted more debate amongst the artists and industry folks on hand. Electro-goth Godess Austra landed a coveted nod (and $2,000 if her disc doesn't end up grabbing top honour -- all the runners up on the Short List are now awarded this consolation prize) for 'Feel It Break.' Other nominees included Braids, Galaxie, Hey Rosetta!, Destoyer, Ron Sexsmith, Colin Stetson, Timber Timbre and the Weeknd. |
Tokyo Police Club's Graham Wright Goes With His 'Gut' on 'Shirts vs. Skins' Posted: 06 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: News, Exclusive, New Releases Mike Juneau "My way is a lot more gut," he tells Spinner. "I'm more interested in capturing the moment that feels right and running with that rather than spending ages just trying to perfect it. I think by listening to my record and a Tokyo record, the differences are going to be obvious in terms of my vocals aren't always perfect, not every take is perfect, but the feeling of it is there." Wright wrote nearly 60 songs after Tokyo Police Club finished touring their 'Elephant Shell' disc, the best material ending up on 'Shirts vs. Skins.' And now that TPC have entered a similar period of recuperating after touring their second album, 'Champ,' Wright can go back into solo mode. |

Lifechangers: Carb Lover's Diet Posted: 06 Jul 2011 10:54 AM PDT Pasta and bread lovers everywhere are rejoicing, thanks to "The Carb Lover's Diet," written by the editors of Health Magazine; Ellen Kunes and Frances Largeman-Roth. The diet helps you stay full longer by filling up on "good" carbs, which include oatmeal, slightly green bananas, whole wheat pasta, brown rice and barley -- Roth says eating them "helps boost your metabolism." The diet consists of a two parts; the first is the seven-day kick start plan, in which the ladies recommend eating 1,200 calories a day and getting rid of artificial sweeteners and diet drinks. The second is the three-week immersion plan, which allows you to eat more, including wine and dessert. Kunes explains, "The average weight loss per month would be about 12 pounds. We've had a lot of people who have lost 30, 40, 50 pounds." |
