starting my Blu Ray collection, what are the 'must haves'?

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 09:43 AM PDT

I finally got around to getting an HDTV and want to take advantage of my PS3's Blu Ray player, so I want to know what are the 'must have' movies I need to start my collection. I'm not looking for movies that everyone should have in their collection, I'm looking for movies that are clearly better in HD compared to regular DVDs.

So far I'm thinking of:

  • LOTR Extended Ed.
  • Batman Begins
  • Dark Knight

What else? My uneducated mind thinks that action/adventure/movies with CGI would benefit the most from HD but I'm willing to be proven wrong. I'm new to the World of Blu Ray, so any suggestions are welcome.

If Movie Characters were Hipsters

r/Movies, what is your favorite laugh-out-loud comedy?

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 09:06 AM PDT

My choice is Bowfinger. It's perfectly absurd and has some of the best performances by Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in a long time.

Funny how after RottenTomatoes were bought by Warner Bros the movies like "Captain America" get 75% Certified Fresh. This would have been unheard of just a few years ago.

Sam Comen for AOL

The newly reborn bi-weekly LA dance party Check Yo Ponytail 2 will return July 30 with a performance by Nite Jewe. In honor of the occasion, the multimedia artist and Ariel Pink associate has compiled a mixtape titled 'Lover for the Weekend' that spans a large chunk of the electronic music spectrum and is sure to get party-goers in the mood.

"CPY's main function is to introduce new artists or shine a spotlight on cool things that are happening musically," one of the party's creators, Franki Chan, tells Spinner. "We like to be able to provide people with a wealth of information on each artist and the show as a whole. Adding to the experience are these mixtapes and our videos that give people something they can 'take home' with them and/or experience the show whether they live in L.A. of not."

Video: Arnold and Maria Visit Christopher at Hospital amid Divorce Proceedings

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 10:30 AM PDT

Suffering from broken ribs and a collapsed lung, Christopher Schwarzenegger, 13, is still in the hospital recovering from a serious surfing accident, and his estranged parents Arnold and Maria are by his side.

Shriver called 911 following the accident saying, "He can't move... he's having trouble breathing."

The divorcing couple, reunited at their son's bedside, released a joint statement last week: "A few days ago our son Christopher suffered an accident at the beach. While it has been a very scary week, Christopher is surrounded by his family and friends. He is a brave boy and is expected to make a full recovery."

Arnold Doesn't Want to Pay Alimony

Per the divorce, Arnold had previously filed not to give Maria spousal support -- a move that received much criticism and backlash. The former California governor has recently re-filed court papers stating he will pay alimony, according to TMZ.

The actor blamed his divorce attorney for his initial decision to deny alimony to Maria, his wife of 25 years.

Brand New EMPIRE Magazine Cover Revealed!

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 10:10 AM PDT

In the latest issue of EMPIRE magazine, there is a lot of new info and (probably) images from Dredd, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. I'm guessing that below is a part of the new image of Christian Bale as Batman, and the full reveal is inside the issue. And as they say on their site: "For starters there's Karl Urban as Judge Dredd glowering menacingly into your magazine-buying eyes, flanked on either side by Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man and Christian Bale's Batman for The Dark Knight Rises. Not a bad little team, we think you'll agree... Inside the actual issue itself you'll be happy to discover 12 ever-so-very exclusive exclusives, including John Carter, Man Of Steel, The Avengers and Men In Black 3." There you go. Hopefully we will get official pics soon, so stay tuned!
