Wayne Hemingway Celebrates British Popular Culture with the Vintage Festival

Vintage Festival

Britain's music tastes have always been informed by international influences as much as they have been by homegrown talent but no other country makes the link between fashion and music with the same degree of passion or finesse. Be it 50s Teddy Boys, 60s Mods, 70s Glam or the baggy clothing favoured by 80s ravers, it's always been the British that have led the way when it comes to giving music culture its defining look.

Taking over London's Southbank Centre at the end of July, the Vintage Festival is a celebration of Britain's love affair with music, fashion and popular culture. Spread across six floors, the festival will present over 70 live bands and 150 DJs including Heaven 17,
Booker T and Andrew Weatherall as they celebrate music and fashion from the 1920s to the 1980s.

Spinner caught up with two of the Vintage festival's organisers, fashion designer Wayne Hemingway and his son Jack, to find out more.

Music and fashion have always been linked but have we come to the point where neither is growing any more?

Jack Hemingway: I think that for a long period, yes. Indie bands have been dressing down and it's just been about getting their hair as greasy and as messy as possible. But I think that performing on stage should be about a show and dressing up and looking good and smart and doing things a bit differently. Most bands and pop stars these days don't and the only person who is doing it is Lady Gaga. It's embarrassing to say that because her music is so bad but her presence and attitude and the way she dresses is amazing.

Wayne Hemingway: I can't image the equivalent of Vintage in 20 years time playing a Gaga track. You might have a Gaga picture on the wall but... Interesting stuff is happening in black music. After gangster hip-hop and all that, Aloe Blacc is coming back to black music's roots. He looks like he cares about his appearance and that's a healthy thing. When I look at younger age groups, there are still plenty of people that dress absolutely amazingly. The only thing that they're not doing is [making it tribal]. That's because places like Top Man have got a whole team of designers straight from college and that means that fashion isn't as visual as it once was; you don't see a whole gang of skinheads walking down the street which was quite exciting.

Selina Kyle Reviews Captain America: The First Avenger

The premise of a lot of superhero movies has the ability to leave the layman scratching his head and going huh? He did what? With what? That's not even possible! Well yeah, its not. But that's the whole point of Comic Book Characters isn't it? The ability to create something or someone phenomenal with your imagination. The idea of Super Heroes and powerful rings that can construct anything are not ridiculous nor are they silly. It's the translation and execution of these concepts onto the big screen that becomes tricky. That is where Green Lantern failed (IMO). Not because its "lame", but because they failed to do it justice. I will admit I was skeptical about seeing Captain America especially because of the embargo placed on it. Does the movie completely blow? And after reading the reviews, it appeared to be split 2 ways. The people who knew the story

The Amazing Spider-Man's Rhys Ifans Arrested At SDCC

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 10:21 AM PDT

Anyone who watched the panel vids and interviews with the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man yesterday could probably tell Ifans had had a few..to put it mildly. Well evidently the Welshman is a mean drunk if the following is accurate.. Here is the full report from The Wrap "The Amazing Spider-Man" villain Rhys Ifans was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery for shoving a female security guard before Friday night's Comic-Con panel for the film, police tell TheWrap. Ifans, who smelled of alcohol, became irate when a member of his entourage was unable to enter the hall for lack of proper credentialing, police said. He shoved the guard, and was allowed to participate in the panel, but the guard subsequently made a citizen's arrest. "He was aggressive and belligerent," Lt. Andra Brown said of the Welsh actor. "He was... berating everyone from the security staff to the United States of America." By TwitterButtons.com

Justin Lin Updates Status On Terminator 5

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 10:05 AM PDT

Speaking to Movie Hole, Justin Lin - who has been attached to the fifth Terminator film for a few months or so - updates the status of the film, saying that he's still involved (despite the change of ownership of the franchise's rights), while also confirming that he's met with Arnold Schwarzenegger (who's been the star of every installment except for 2009's Terminator Salvation) and that there's no script for the film yet. He also addresses the possibility of bringing back Sarah Conner. You're doing the Terminator movie? Is that a sure thing or… Well, again, it's gone through a change in ownership…I have a very clear idea because I'm a huge… There's huge part of my life when I was a kid, I love that franchise and I have a very clear idea of what I want… If they're going to do another one what that would be. And also, I think

Weird Movies: Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 09:51 PM PDT

Imagine the most grandiose and retrofuturistic of Ken Adam's production design for the 007 films, splashed with lurid color and maybe a dab of LSD. Take all of the fantastic gadgets, the colossal capers, the beautiful vamps - everything, with just one minor change. 007 is no longer MI6's top agent, but Europe's most notorious supercriminal. This is Mario Bava's "Danger: Diabolik."

Bava, of course, is the supreme Italian cinematography-cum-director whose visual flair was responsible for classics like "Black Sunday" with Barbara Steele. Roman Coppola borrowed heavily from "Danger: Diabolik" for his 2001 directorial debut, "CQ," and understandably so. It really does play like a 007 doppleganger.

John Phillip Law is Diabolik, the nefarious villain of the title, and he's as sexy as he was as Sinbad in "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" with the added bonus of a hipper-than-hip hideout, a beautiful moll in the form of Marisa Mel and one hell of a booming laugh.

It's worth noting, too, that "Danger: Diabolik" was based on a very popular comic strip, which certainly informs its narrative conventions and its aesthetics. Bava had quite the eye for composition, color and movement, so "Danger: Diabolik" still holds up pretty well despite being a tad bombastic (only in the best of ways).

"Danger: Diabolik" is widely available and I'd encourage anyone even remotely interested to give it a chance, particularly if you've never seen any of Bava's other films.

X-Men: First Class - Wolverine says what?

"Fuck off."

or

"Go fuck yourself."

Please tell me I didn't imagine an alternate scene for something so simple. I definitely heard "fuck off", would they really change something so minor?

Give us a post of what you heard and where you watched the movie.

The police statement says officers "found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene," SkyNews reports. The statement also said, "Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained." Last month, Winehouse, best known for her hit song "Rehab," canceled the remainder of her 12-city European concert tour after questionable performances where she appeared to be out of it. The singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol. Winehouse recently left a British rehab program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for the European concerts.

Amy Winehouse, the once-successful and often-troubled singer, has been found dead in her London home, the Daily Mail reports. She was 27.

So far, a cause of death for the British retro-soul artist has yet to be revealed. Winehouse had appeared earlier this week at her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield's performance at London's Roundhouse. Though she didn't sing, she danced onstage and told the surprised concertgoers to buy the 15-year-old singer's album.

Northern Exposure is Spinner's MP3 column highlighting the best in new Canadian music. This week we feature some of the notable acts at Guelph, Ontario's annual Hillside Festival (July 22-24).

When you come across a band called Gobble Gobble, it's a safe bet the music they play is bound to be, well, interesting. One thing one can say about this mysterious noise-pop collective with origins in Edmonton is that they certainly sound unlike anything you've heard before.

Fronted by "pop experimentalist" Cecil Frena, Gobble Gobble is aptly described in their bio as a "hyperactive, futuristic techno-pop project" -- to that, we'd add: "that really messes with your ears -- in a good way."

Five Hair and Makeup Must-Haves!

"Extra" talked with beauty expert Jamie Krell about five things you should have to stay looking great this summer. 1. Amika Clipless Curling Wand for curly, wavy hair. "When it comes to your hair, the look for summer is definitely beach-y waves, like Blake Lively," explains Krell. 2. Dr. Brandt UV SPF 30 for flawless skin. "We've all seen those pics of Gwyneth Paltrow, on the beach looking amazing with little-to-no makeup. The secret is this Dr. Brandt UV SPF 30. It's water resistant, oil free, gives total protection and is tinted so it hides those imperfections."

3. Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer for that sun-kissed glow. Says Krell, "You can use this on cheekbones, arms, legs ,even on your chest to give you that summer healthy glow." 4. Lancome Color Design Eye Brightening for big eyes. "One of the biggest trends this season when it comes to makeup is bright, bright, bright!" Krell describes. "The brighter and bolder, the better." 5. Reese Witherspoon's Fragrance, Laugh Often. Krell says, "A lot of people don't realize it's important to switch up your fragrance in summer. A spicy fragrance can be too heavy in the hot summer months. You want to stick with something that's floral with citrus notes or floral with lemon, lime, mandarin."
