Machine Gun Preacher Moves to Relativity Media

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:18 AM PDT

Gerard Butler's Machine Gun Preacher will be distributed by Relativity Media

Relativity Media announced today that it has acquired North American rights from Lionsgate to theatrically market and distribute Machine Gun Preacher. Directed and produced by DGA and Golden Globe-nominee Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster's Ball) and written by Jason D. Keller (Relativity's Untitled Snow White Project), the film stars Gerard Butler (300) in a tour de force performance and will release in Los Angeles and New York on September 23, 2011. The film will expand markets in the weeks to follow. Lionsgate will continue to oversee international distribution on the film, working in partnership with Relativity.

The film also showcases powerful performances by an ensemble cast, including Michelle Monaghan (Due Date), Kathy Baker (Cold Mountain), Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), Madeline Carroll (The Spy Next Door) and breakout actor Souleymane Sy Savane (Goodbye Solo).

Machine Gun Preacher is based on the true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who finds faith leading him on a path to East Africa. Shocked by the mayhem in Sudan, Childers becomes a crusader for hundreds of refugee children. Inspired to create a safe haven for the multitudes fleeing enslavement by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army, he restores peace to their lives and eventually his own.

Producing are Relativity's Robbie Brenner, Safady Entertainment's Gary Safady and Craig Chapman, and GG Filmz's Deborah Giarratana.

"This is a powerful story, and we feel strongly that it is one audiences need to see. Forster once again proves that he is among the best directors of our time and Butler delivers a career-defining performance bolstered by a rock solid supporting cast," says Relativity's President of Worldwide Production, Tucker Tooley.

"The film is blessed to have two passionate partners in Relativity and Lionsgate. I'm excited to be working with both companies to bring the incredible story of Sam Childers to the world. I'm really proud of my cast, and all of their hard work in making this movie that means so much to all of us personally," said Forster.

"We have a longstanding relationship with Marc, and given that together we felt it was best for the film to be released domestically this year, we are very happy that Relativity is able to handle it," says Mike Paseornek, Lionsgate's President of Motion Picture Production and Development.

Machine Gun Preacher comes to theaters September 23rd, 2011 and stars Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker, Souleymane Sy Savane. The film is directed by Marc Forster.

Oprah, Oscars? Oscars, Oprah?

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 11:01 AM PDT

It looks like Oprah Winfrey is at the top of the list of candidates to host the 84th Annual Academy Awards next February.

The Motion Picture Academy sources told Chicago Sun-Times that they firmly believe Winfrey could greatly expand the show's audience. There may also be a separate deal for a behind-the-scenes special and a post-Oscars show, airing only on the OWN, which would give the cable channel some added exposure. Oprah was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1985's "The Color Purple." She lost to Anjelica Huston in "Prizzi's Honor." Oprah went on to co-produce the Broadway musical version of "The Color Purple."

Red Hot Chili Peppers have unveiled the cover for their next album -- and it has been designed by the bad boy of Britart, Damien Hirst.

Hirst has made millions by pickling animals, sticking diamonds to a skull and getting staff to paint spots for him. He has also maintained a long relationship with the music world, having directed the 'Country House' video for Blur and recently creating visuals for U2's Glastonbury performance.

Now he has created an exclusive design for the Californian group's 10th album, 'I'm With You,' that brings together two Hirst motifs -- a fly resting on a medicinal capsule. The band posted the shot on their Web site, writing, "Check out our new album cover -- officially revealed! Damien Hirst did it for us and we're happy to get this out to ya!"

Tori and Brock | Photo Credits: TLC

TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras (Wednesdays at 10/9c) is often criticized for exhibiting bad parenting, but this week's episode is garnering the opposite response. We were introduced to Brock Ritter, a now-8-year-old, self-described "diva," who lives in Michigan and pursues his interests in dancing, pageantry and occasionally dressing up like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, despite teasing and what society dictates as gender-normative behavior. (Watch a clip of Brock in action.)

We spoke with Brock's mom, Tori, about letting her son be himself, pageantry criticism and what Brock's father thinks of all this...
