Marvel's the Avengers plot details revealed

Last Thursday, a set of HeroClix miniatures seemingly gave away the "secret" villain of Marvel's the Avengers. It was a potential spoiler that is being confirmed today by a whole new slew of leaked plot details. Suffice it to say, if you wish to know no more about this movie, stop reading right now and go check out this new Portlandia video. As we will not only be offering MAJOR SPOILERS, we'll also be telling you the end of the movie.

How'd you like that in your headline?

Marvel's the Avengers script leaked ages ago, so its quite amazing that more hasn't been said about the story up until now. A source close to the production (i.e. The bootlegger who has been selling these stolen scripts out of his backpack near the shopping carts at the Food 4 Less) confirms that quite a bit of this Joss Whedon directed ensemble superhero adventure was filmed in secret. Some of these scenes do, in fact, have Hugo Weaving reprising his role as Red Skull from Captain America: The First Avenger.

How does he fit into the storyline? And what have they done with the Skrulls? Check out this laundry list of details below.

  • The Skrull: The aliens are now being called The Redacted and are a new version of The Skrulls. Fox still own Skrulls, so Marvel have changed them enough to not get sued. They're multicolored and are shape shifters.&#8232

Thanos: Thanos is in the movie. There were rumors some months ago that Loki would do business with Thanos and they're true. Thanos is tricked by Loki in the movie. Basically, Loki has been collecting Infinity Gems and the Infinity Gauntlet, but tricks Thanos in to thinking that the Infinity Gauntlet is the most powerful. In return, Thanos gives him The Redacted.&#8232

The Leviathan: The Leviathan is an alien serpent given to Loki by Thanos as a part of the deal.&#8232

Red Skull: Red Skull is in the movie. Loki meets him on his travels. They split the 6 Infinity Gems between them. Loki takes the Mind, Reality and Power gems and Red Skull takes the Soul, Time and Space gems.&#8232

Loki joins the Avengers: The Redacted discover that Loki tricked their master, and betray him. Hence Loki seemingly being on The Avengers side in some set photos.

If those aren't enough new details for you, a description of Marvel's the Avengers Lego sets continue the tradition of toys spoiling plot points. Here are the names of four upcoming sets, which clue you into some of the scenes we will see when the movie hits theaters this summer.

  • Captain America's Avenging Cycle: Featuring Captain America, Nick Fury (+ a motorcycle)

Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape: Featuring Loki, Thor, Captain America

Hulk's Helicarrier Breakout: Featuring Hulk, Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America&#82326869

Quinjet Aerial Battle: Featuring Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man (+ the Quinjet)

That ought to be enough to digest for a while. At this rate, the only thing about the movie that won't be spoiled before it hits theaters is the scene featuring a cameo from Ant-Man.

Ah, who cares? No one was going to see this stupid movie anyway. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens on the same day.

Marvel's the Avengers comes to theaters May 4th, 2012 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

I watched The Innkeepers last night, and had an interesting debate in my head

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:50 AM PST

So my friend was excited that a pre-screening was going to be offered for this cool ghost movie he's been looking forward to called The Innkeepers. I hadn't heard anything about it, but my friend generally has good taste. Early on, I decided that what I was watching seemed to be about a 3-star film (I'm using the 4-star scale that I've gotten used to through Ebert). It was very conventional in a lot of ways- cookie-cutter music clued us in, as to when we supposed to be feeling dread or whimsy or what-have-you, individual shots and camera angles never got too inventive, chances were not taken with the casting, things like that. These are not serious criticisms, just observations that lead me to assume that I wasn't going to be blown away.

With my expectations calibrated, I was enjoying what the movie had to offer. Enjoying it more than I was expecting to, as it turned out. The characters weren't spectacularly complex, but charming and believable enough. You believe that when their lines were penned, the writers had more in mind than 'cute girl' and 'nerdy guy'. About the writing- it was more sophisticated than the utilitarian dialogue I usually expect of 3-star movies, such as when a character shares an interesting opinion on pessimism, or when a customer, exasperated with the hotel staff supplies a great and memorable laugh. Early on, the film subtly and cleverly calls out the shallow thrills (SURPRISE! Spooky face and a loud violin screech!) that teen-targeted horror movies usually have to offer, and declares itself to be above them. I was never shocked by how the plot developed, but it does so convincingly and confidently. For lack of any impressively deep individual characters, you gets a great ensemble of misfits, particularly the actress-turned-mystic, who feel as if they'd be oddly at home in a black-and-white, 40's monster-movie classic. The movie has got a style and technique I was pleasantly surprised with. It plays its cards close to its chest, doesn't beat us over the head with its scares, and understands the unsettling power of simple peculiarity. I'm a great lover of folklore, and I loved that from the beginning, the material is handled as if it is in the tradition of ghost stories, as opposed to scary movies.

Yet for all the goodness this movie is imbued with, I never felt for a moment like it was a 4-star movie, or even 3 ½. To me, a 3 ½-star movie reaches for greatness and achieves it in some respects, minus some forgivable flaws. A 4-star movie is great, and is elevated above normal movies with its clarity of vision. It is not just craftsmanship, it is true artistry. The Innkeepers seems never to strive for greatness. It never tries to show us something we've never seen before, and some choices in language, character, and general presentation show their seams as committee decisions. These instances just are not disruptive or incredible, though. They never distract from the movie's strengths and they never feel totally, undeniably contrived.

So, as I was considering this flick, I remembered an exchange I had a bit ago with an individual who was dismissing a movie I esteemed highly based on what I felt to be unreasonable complaints. This person was not accepting the film in question on its own terms, was judging it by what they would have liked and this movie lacked, rather than judging the quality and execution of what it did present. So here's the sticky wicket: Is this a 3-star movie, because it lacks all the hallmarks of a movie that is striving for greatness, or is it a 4-star movie because of how perfectly it embraces the spirit of a shallow, thrilling, GOOD spookshow movie? I was never seriously impressed with the movie's components, but it never seemed to WANT to wow me, it seemed to want to entertain me. In that respect, it never falters, never feels forced or false. I never rolled my eyes, and I was continuously pleased and satisfied with its approach. It's almost as if it's supposed to be an ambassador to less-discerning tastes from the world of better films.

What I decided on is that The Innkeepers is a 4-star, 3-star movie. 4 stars is its rating, 3-star is its sub-genre.

Thin Lizzy Tapes Featuring Up to 700 Unreleased Songs Discovered

Before his death in 1986, Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott gave an unidentified caretaker 150 tapes of unreleased music. Now, the Irish Independent reports, some of the nearly 700 songs included in that stash will finally see the light of day, as Universal is prepping a new Thin Lizzy box set due out later this year.

"This is an absolutely stunning find," project manager Steve Hammonds told the newspaper.

Following on the heels of another box set, 'Live at the BBC,' which was released last year, the collection will feature outtakes and alternate versions of Lizzy hits, as well as "material which was recorded but never released at the time," Hammonds said. The tunes spans 1971 to 1981, when the Dublin rockers were signed to Decca.

The group's surviving members are said to be helping with the project, and while Wednesday, Jan. 4 marks the 26th anniversary of Lynott's passing, Hammonds insists this set is no crass cash-in.

Rachel McAdams on Why Her Exes Still Love Her

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:55 AM PST

Actress Rachel McAdams showed off a playful side in Glamour magazine as the February cover girl, talking about her new movie "The Vow" -- and dating her co-stars.
rachel-mcadams.jpg
McAdams was most famously linked to her "The Notebook" co-star Ryan Gosling, who said she was one of his two greatest girlfriends. She laughed with Glamour about why her exes gush about her, "'I'm paying them. But, no, that's lovely to hear." She is currently dating her "Midnight in Paris" castmate Michael Sheen. Is there something about a movie set that is romantic to her? Rachel explained, "No. A set may seem like a good place for romance, but I don't think it's very conducive; it's too distracting. Every relationship I've had with a co-worker has come after the fact, because you wind up actually spending a lot of time with those people promoting their movie." McAdams is starring next in the romantic film "The Vow," playing a woman who loses her memory in an accident, and must be wooed all over again by her husband (Channing Tatum). Rachel was worried the chemistry with Tatum would be off "because we were more like brother and sister, like buds," but added, "Channing is very outgoing, very kind and a lot of fun to work with." You can fall in love with Tatum and McAdams when "The Vow" premieres February 10.

Indie pop duo Pepper Rabbit have decided to break up after a two year run, singer Xander Singh revealed on the band's Facebook page. "Pepper Rabbit will live on only in the realm of the two records and any live shows that have already been performed. There will be no more Pepper Rabbit records or shows," he wrote.

Though it wasn't immediately clear why the bandmates decided to go their separate ways, there are several contributing factors, namely drummer Luc Laurent's new gig with Islands. "Now with Xander and I moving on into the world of music, I am happy to say all of our touring showed me that I love this, at times, challenging lifestyle," Laurent wrote in another post. "This spring I'll be on tour playing drums with Islands and I hope I continue to see all of you in my future endeavors."

The Dark Knight Rises Prologue Gets New Audio Mix

The Dark Knight Rises prologue gets a new, cleaned-up audio mix

When the six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises hit theaters last month, attached to IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, several people complained that Tom Hardy's Bane is difficult to understand.

Warner Bros. has sent a new The Dark Knight Rises Prologue audio track to IMAX theaters, which features a clearer, cleaned-up mix of Bane's dialogue. Take a look at what this insider had to say below, and take a look at a portion of the letter sent to IMAX projectionists.

"A friend of mine who is an IMAX projectionist told me they received a new soundtrack for The Dark Knight Rises prologue. He said it's now a combo soundtrack with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, but the cool thing about this is that they've cleaned up the dialogue. They've gone in and lowered the background noise of the plane and other things, thus making Bane's dialogue clearer and more understandable. He asked some people after they left the movie if they could understand Bane and they all said they had no issue understanding him, and were excited for the movie."

The source stated that the new audio mix is an estimated 40 to 50% cleaner than the original mix, "because he's no longer being overpowered by the background noise that drowned him out before."

We reported last month that director Christopher Nolan planned to slightly alter the audio, but had no intentions of reworking Bane's dialogue completely.

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.
