The battle over the SOPA and PIPA bills -- the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act -- currently making their way through the U.S. Congress has hit a crescendo. Wikipedia, Reddit and other sites shut themselves down on Jan. 18 to protest the legislation which enables the U.S. government to block public access to any site accused of copyright infringement without their day in court.

Several artists are also now speaking out on the bills that are supposed to be protecting their rights.

Trent Reznor, MGMT, Nada Surf's Daniel Lorca, OK Go, Amanda Palmer, Erin McKeown and the Lonely Island, the comedic band fronted by 'Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg, wrote an open letter on Jan 17 stating their opposition to PIPA and SOPA.

VIDEO: Check Out The Trailer For New STAR WARS Novel DARTH PLAGUEIS

Posted: 18 Jan 2012 11:27 AM PST

One of the things I did enjoy about Revenge Of The Sith was Palpatine (or "Darth Sidious" who would of course become The Emperor) relating part of the tale of Darth Plagueis to Anakin. I thought it sounded like a great story since anything to do with the origins of The Sith always piqued my interest. Well now in a new novel James Luceno will go into more detail, while also telling the early history of Palpatins - how he came to be a Sith Lord, how he entered politics, and how he first came to train Darth Maul. Here is the trailer ad, featuring some of the footage described above, along with glimpses from both previous prequel movies too. I find it hilarious that Hayden Christensen can actually make the delivery of the single word "no" sound awful. Anyway, ol Lucas may be retired but you can be assured that

Tribes Grow From Wallet-Stealing to Opening for the Pixies, Releasing Debut LP

When it came time to mobilize a fanbase, London band Tribes chose to start simply, in a place many would consider outdated in this day and age. Rather than take to Facebook, Twitter, Bandcamp or any other social networking sites, the four-piece decided to forgo a Web presence in favor of more homegrown initiatives.

"We actually postered our gigs, which is totally unheard of in London," singer Johnny Lloyd tells Spinner in a thin voice that belies his plaintive onstage wail. "We put posters everywhere, flyered them and gave our mates a crate of beer if they went out and did all that."

Tribes have always done things in a slightly unorthodox way, including how guitarist Dan White met drummer Miguel Demelo. "Dan stole Miguel's wallet at a party when they were about 15," Lloyd says. "You can't leave anything lying around with Dan. He steals on a daily basis, I imagine. I just haven't caught him yet."

Iran's A Separation is one of the nine finalists for the Best Foreign Film Oscar

Nine films will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Sixty-three films had originally qualified in the category.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:

Canada, Monsieur Lazhar, Philippe Falardeau, director;

Denmark, SuperClasico, Ole Christian Madsen, director;

Germany, Pina, Wim Wenders, director;

Iran, A Separation, Asghar Farhadi, director;

Israel, Footnote, Joseph Cedar, director;

Foreign Language Film nominations for 2011 are again being determined in two phases.

The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based members, screened the 63 eligible films between mid-October and January 13. The group's top six choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist.

The shortlist will be winnowed down to the five nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles. They will spend Friday, January 20, through Sunday, January 22, viewing three films each day and then casting their ballots.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, at 5:30 AM PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

The Expendables 2 Gets PG-13 Rating Because of Chuck Norris

Posted: 18 Jan 2012 10:54 AM PST

Lionsgate is currently working to release The Expendables 2 this summer, which adds genre icon Chuck Norris to an already-legendary lineup of action stars.

While talking about his participation in the project, Chuck Norris dropped a bombshell, saying that he forced the filmmakers to cut out all the foul language. This is to insure that The Expendables 2 will get a PG-13 rating, and that the younger kids will be able to see it.

Here's what he had to say.

"In The Expendables 2, it had a lot of hard language in there, that would prevent a lot of young people from going to see it. I said, I don't do movies like that. I didn't do them in the past, I didn't do them on my TV series. I said, if you can't cut out all the language, hardcore language, I can't do it. So they did, and they made it a PG-13 film, so kids can go see it."

While we won't hear any naughty words, it seems we do get to see Chuck Norris saving the lives of this star-studded cast throughout The Expendables 2.

"I just finished The Expendables 2. That was a fun movie to do because I keep saving their lives throughout the whole movie, so I'm like the superhero against (Arnold) Schwarzenegger, (Sylvester) Stallone, and Bruce Willis."

clickHere to watch the full video interview with Chuck Norris for The Expendables 2.

The Expendables 2 comes to theaters August 17th, 2012 and stars Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Jet Li. The film is directed by Simon West.
