The Devil Made Them Do It!: 12 Great Demon Movies

Posted: 08 Jan 2012 10:41 AM PST

With "The Devil Inside" is scaring audiences this weekend, here are a dozen more devilishly good ones!

12 Great Devilish Movies

'Constantine' (2005)

Based on the DC/Vertigo comic book, the story revolves around an irreverent supernatural detective named John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), who has, quite literally, been to hell and back. And just when he thinks he's out, they pull him back in.

'The Devil's Advocate' (1997)

Al Pacino has a field day playing the Prince of Darkness, disguised as a bigwig, corrupt lawyer who sucks Keanu Reeves into his evil reindeer games. Wait, Reeves again? Poor guy can't get away from it.

'Drag Me to Hell' (2009)

There is a lesson to be learned here -- do not tick off a really scary looking gypsy woman because if you do, she's gonna curse ya! And then you'll know what it feels like to be dragged into hell.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose' (2005)

Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) has a seemingly normal life -- until she goes to college and has some horrible demon possess her. Not good. Not good AT ALL.

'Paranormal Activity' (2007)

If anyone is freaked out by those bumps, creaks -- and demon possessions -- in the night, especially around 1:00 to 3:00 am, this is certainly not the movie for you. But it sure makes for one helluva a ride.

'The Evil Dead' (1981)

Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. That should make some interesting vacation photos.

'The Exorcist' (1973)

This is the mother of all demon invasion movies and pretty much scared the bejeezus out of the average moviegoer. It may have something to do with that sweet innocent face of Linda Blair, horribly distorted. That and maybe all the pea soup vomit.

'Hellraiser' (1987)

An unfaithful wife encounters the zombie of her dead lover, who's being chased by demons after he escaped from their sado-masochistic Hell. The guy on the right, his name is Pinhead. Apropos.

'Little Nicky' (2000)

You have to include at least one comedy because, well, hell can sometimes be a fun place to be -- at least according to Nicky (Adam Sandler). He has grown up in the underworld as the slow-witted son of Satan (Harvey Keitel) and loves it. He's even willing to fight for his right to the throne.

'Possession' (1981)

A young woman (Isabelle Adjani) leaves her family for an unspecified reason, but the husband (Sam Neill) is determined to find out the truth. At first, he suspects that a man is involved, but gradually, he finds out more and more strange behaviors and bizarre incidents that indicate something more than a possessed love affair. Could it be... I don't know... SATAN?

'Rosemary's Baby' (1968)

Poor Mia Farrow. All she wants is to love her husband (John Cassavetes), have a baby and have a happy life. But what does she get instead? She's raped by the Beast while being drugged and ends up giving birth to the son of Satan. "What have you done to its EYES?"

'The Omen' (1976)

Speaking of the son of Satan, let's not forget the angelic-faced Damien (Harvey Stephens), who was born from a jackal but ends up being raised by the unsuspecting U.S. Ambassador (Gregory Peck) and his wife (Lee Remick). Things do not turn out well for them when they find out who Damien's real dad is.

VIDEO: Amazing Opening Title Credits For THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Posted: 08 Jan 2012 09:07 AM PST

So we know that there is a comic book adaptation of this movie in the works from DC Vertigo, but to be honest even if there wasn't this is something every film fan - CBM or otherwise - really should see. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Opening Titles from Onur Senturk on Vimeo. Something else eh? The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is showing now, and although I question the point of the movie being that it is practically identical to the Swedish original, for what it is it's great. Check it out. Side note, Wolvie just brought to my attention that the director of the sequence is one Tim Miller, who will be directing the Deadpool movie. Just a short sequence but still good to know. up your game at Gambling Insider

When one movie copies the plot/story of another, and doesn't give credit, it drives me nuts. Which movies have you caught doing that?

Posted: 08 Jan 2012 10:12 AM PST

For me the most obvious one was Mr. Holland's Opus copying of Follow Mean Boys. Sure, the background and characters were different (music students vs. boy scouts) but they basically mirrored each other (adopted kid, giving up dreams to help children, marriage etc.) right up to their endings.

Which movies have you caught doing that?

A Clockwork Orange (1971) - IMDb

Posted: 08 Jan 2012 10:16 AM PST

So the radio show I listen to every morning and afternoon (Opie and Antony), talked a lot this week about Clockwork Orange. I've read a bit about it, and it sounds a bit fucked up. Is this a movie worth watching? I've noted its about 2 hours long. I've got it here on Netflix, but I don't want to go into it like I did Hellraiser (which was praised by some people close to me, and ended up sucking hugely).

Thanks

Hey /movies, I'm looking for movies about isolation and idleness/endless boredom. Any suggestions?

Posted: 08 Jan 2012 10:23 AM PST

Dramatic range can vary, but I'm looking for more of a focus on the boredom than on "going insane." I need some inspiration for a project I'm working on and I figured reddit is the best place to go for help. I could use a lot more, but so far I've got:

-Being There -Cast Away -Lost In Translation -An episode of Twilight Zone called "The Lonely" -Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Name That Movie: Taxi Driver Leaves with Bags in the Trunk

Posted: 08 Jan 2012 09:22 AM PST

I remember a scene from a movie, but I can't recall what it was. The main character is new to a city (NYC?) and is arriving with a couple bags. He's either getting in or out of a taxi when the driver leaves, bags still in the trunk. I feel like the actor may have been Matthew Broderick. Am I imagining this scene?
