COMICS: Axel Alonso Talks AVENGERS ASSEMBLE; Reveals New Art

Posted: 14 Jan 2012 10:19 AM PST

Talking to Comic Book Resources in their regular "Axel-In-Charge" feature, Marvel Comics E-i-C Axel Alonso was quizzed on how the big screen debut of characters like Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the rest of The Avengers has affected their comic book counterparts and what exactly the company has in store for new and existing readers alike in time for the release of the movie this April. Here's what he had to say about both than and the new series, Avengers Assemble. "A few years ago, very few people knew who Captain America was -- and he's one of the easiest superheroes to understand at a glance: the red-white-and-blue costume, the shield! [Laughs]. "Captain America: The First Avenger" changed that. Going into 2012, Joe Public knows exactly who Steve Rogers is, what makes him tick. Ditto for Iron Man and Thor. That's a big development. One hundred percent of the graduates have been accepted to college or university, and more than a dozen have received full scholarships.

"The pride that I feel today is overpowering," Winfrey told her guests, who included the students, their parents and relatives. "I have been on a mission my whole life to be able to give back what I have been given. Today I am fulfilling that mission. This class will prove that when you invest in the leadership of girls, you invest in a nation."

Winfrey also thanked Nelson Mandela, who served as an inspiration in establishing the school. "I want to thank Nelson Mandela for his leadership and support to help make this school a reality. Although he is not present with us today, I know he shares with us the same sense of pride and accomplishment," said Winfrey.

The OWN mogul opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in Johannesburg in 2007, in the presence of Nelson Mandela. Nearly 3,000 girls from impoverished backgrounds and broken families applied. Only 150 of the best and brightest were selected.

25 Unforgettable 'Oprah Winfrey Show' Moments

Oprah's historic "Diet Dreams Come True" weight episode, in which she celebrated her 67-pound weight loss (in super skinny jeans!) by wheeling a wagon full of fat onto the stage.

Kathy Bray (1989)

An unforgettably raw interview that helped people start thinking differently about having guns in the home. Kathy found her 10-year-old son Scott shot dead by his best friend, after he accidentally pulled the trigger of his dad's 350 Magnum.

Traci Gold and Rudine (1994)

Rudine Howard suffered from lifelong anorexia, and Oprah followed her story from 1989 to her death in 1994. Mattie Stepanek (2001)

Oprah and her fans were touched when they first met Mattie, an 11-year-old born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy. He had three wishes; to talk peace with his idol Jimmy Carter, to have his book of poetry published, and to meet Oprah. All three of his wishes were met before he passed away June 22, 2004.

'The Worst Day of My Life' Featuring Christine McFadden (2004)

After going on a walk one morning, Christine returned to find all four of her children shot dead, after her ex-husband broke into her house and killed them in their sleep. Christine's strength inspired millions, many of whom she met on a follow-up episode, who said Christine saved their lives.

'A Million Little' Questions for James Frey

After allegations that James Frey's memoir "A Million Little Pieces" (which Oprah helped make a best seller) wasn't completely true, Oprah invited Frey back to the show in January 2006 to set the record straight. Ding Dong! Nancy, You're Meeting Tom Cruise! (2001)

This "Oprah" moment is unforgettable for two reasons; first, Nancy's reaction to Oprah telling her she's going to come to Chicago to meet Tom Cruise is beyond hilarious. Ricky Gervais Hints: 'I Have Specific Targets' for Golden Globes

Posted: 14 Jan 2012 11:07 AM PST

The stars prepare to be roasted by host Ricky Gervais during Sunday's Golden Globes, and Gervais continues to hint about what he will do on Hollywood's big night.

ricky-gervais.jpg

During the Television Critics' Association winter press tour panel for his new series, "Life's Too Short," Gervais revealed his plan, saying "I have specific targets, but targets is a word I wouldn't use -- [they're] subjects."

The actor continued, "I'm going to do a monologue about the year and then [ding] six or seven people... like I did last year. I don't have anything against anyone in the room; they're just gags. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. I'm a comedian. I'd rather they laugh than gasp, but I cherish the gasps along with the laughs."

He also went on to say he doesn't believe anyone was really offended last year -- a notion some celebs would find arguable.

The 69th annual Golden Globes will be presented Sunday, January 15 at 8:00 PM ET/5:00 PM PT on NBC!

Fun Facts about Ricky Gervais

Happy Childhood

Gervais has stated that his upbringing and childhood were stable and trauma-free, with a high level of honesty and openness between his family members. He claims that his family, "much like 'The Waltons,'" made fun of each other regularly.

Musical Aspirations

Ricky was in a music group in the early 1980s called Seona Dancing. They released two singles, "Bitter Heart" and "More to Lose," but had no success.

Don't Be Late

"I hate lateness. I hate people who are late. There is no excuse for turning up late for anything. I've never been late for anything in my life. I was actually born a week premature, because I wanted to be early for my own birth. Being late is an insult to me."

Radio Days

Gervais took a job as "Head of Speech" at Xfm London and hired longtime collaborator Stephen Merchant as his assistant. During the interview at a local pub, Merchant agreed to do "all the boring stuff" because of his experience in media studies, while Gervais "mess[ed] around."

Ricky the Boxer?

In 2002, Gervais took part in a charity boxing match against entrepreneur Grant Bovey. The fight was televised by the BBC, and Gervais came out on top in a split decision. The comedian later said that the experience was the "most difficult thing" he had ever done.

Author, Author!

Gervais released a children's book called "Flanimals" in 2004. The sequel, "More Flanimals," was released in 2005.

To Be or Not to Be...

Ricky has a degree in philosophy.

Spiders... Ack!

Gervais suffers from arachnophobia.

'Life's Too Short'

In his BBC series "Life's Too Short," Gervais, Stephen Merchant and actor Warwick Davis make serious guy Liam Neeson a funny dude. Watch!

Gollum, Schmollum

[On the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy]: "I don't like all this stupid Gollum begat Wobblo and the Oompa Loompas and. . . . Oh Jesus Christ! There was too much "Oh, God, here come the gloodloys." Christ almighty, what are they talking about?!"
