I recently watched the Roman Polanski film Carnage and was wondering, are there any other good films which are mainly set in one room?

Movie Debates #1: Burn After Reading (2008) vs. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 10:26 AM PST

I've always wanted to kind of do this, so here goes. I like seeing people debate as to what is a better movie of two similar movies, so I felt like starting it up. Here will be the first of (hopefully) many based off the response.

Ok so our first two films are both from the Coen Brothers, 2000's Odyssey comedy-musical about three men and their troubles and triumphs as they attempt to escape prison, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and 2008's quirky political comedy about a bunch of less-than-intelligent gym employees and their quest for political truth and money for surgeries, Burn After Reading.

So what are people's thoughts on these films? Which is better and why? What are the positives/negatives of each film? Acting/Directing/Screenwriting/Cinematography? Have at it r/movies!

What movies have a good concept or premise that might be good in the hands of a more competent director/cast?

So i just watched 'Brick'

And it has nestled in as one of my top movies. I LOVED it. I very rarely make any sort of audible commentary while watching a movie for the 1st time and when Tug executes Dode in the tunnel I quite loudly said "Oh shit!" I thought the dialog, although a bit to hardboiled, was absolutely fantastic and Joseph Gordon-Levitt did an AMAZING job as Brendan. I was completely conflicted about Tug. I was almost rooting for him after his heart to heart with Brendan. I highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it!

Just finished watching the prestige again... [Spoilers]

and the ending is just something else. The way in which you are shown both Angier's and Borden's characters stripped of their performing persona's, to what they truly at their core created such a profound climax that I was brought to tears.

Edit: The only other film I could not help myself from the wave of tears was the first time watching the green mile.

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno Dead at 85

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

joe-paterno.jpg
Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football, died Sunday of lung cancer. He was 85. Paterno had been hospitalized since January 13, stemming from complications to the cancer treatments. His family released a statement, "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled. He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community." In his 61 years with the university and 46 seasons as head football coach, the man, known as "JoePa," won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and two national championships. More than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL. The final days of Paterno's Penn State career, however, were marred by a child sex abuse scandal involving the team's former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years. In 2002, Paterno failed to go to the police after being told a young boy was molested inside the football complex by Sandusky. In November, Paterno retired and said he was "absolutely devastated" by the abuse case. "This is a tragedy," the coach said. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." Paterno is survived by his wife, Sue and five children.

Director Doug Liman Talks About Tom Cruise's ALL YOU NEED IS KILL

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 08:40 AM PST

He also must have variety. His next film is always much different than the last. And even though Doug Liman is an accomplished director with some brilliant films on his resume like Bourne Identity and Swingers he still is challenging himself. He had incredibly high praise for Mission: Impossible 4 director Brad Bird and the skyscraper scene. He tells Collider's Adam Chitwood, "If you look at Mission: Impossible 4, it's very hard to do vertigo, and they really did a brilliant job on that movie, when he's on the side of that building. I've done sides of buildings, in The Bourne Identity and in Covert Affairs, and I've never elicited the emotional response that Brad [Bird] and Tom [Cruise] got in M:I4." The rest of the conversation had to deal with Tom Cruise's All You Need Is Kill. A science fiction film based on a Japanese graphic novel. The story involves a soldier
