Survivor's Christine: Two Weeks Alone on Redemption Island Was Natural To Me Posted: 03 Nov 2011 11:00 AM PDT After 14 straight days of near-solitude on Redemption Island, you'd expect Survivor's Christine Shields Markoski to be relieved she was sent home. But the 39-year-old teacher says she was unfazed by an experience that would drive most people to the brink. "It was just very natural for me to be on Redemption Island. It was fine!" Christine identified herself as a tough cookie from Day 1. In the season premiere, as the other tribe members welcomed veterans Ozzy and Coach with open arms, Christine publicly called them "temporary players." We chatted with the nature-loving New Yorker about her experience, whether she regrets her attitude toward the vets, and what she would have done differently if given the chance. Jackson Death Trial: Closing Arguments, Judge Instructs Jury Posted: 03 Nov 2011 11:08 AM PDT The 22 days of testimony in the involuntary manslaughter trial against Michael Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray have concluded, with lawyers presenting their closing arguments Thursday. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor began Thursday's court session by instructing the 12-person jury that in order to find for involuntary manslaughter, they must unanimously agree on at least one of two theories in order to convict Murray: The first theory would be that Murray knowingly used propofol to help Jackson sleep, despite serious health risks. Criminal negligence requires more than just ordinary carelessness, inattention, or mistakes in judgment. A reasonable person would have to have known that the action would create such a risk of death. The second theory would be that Murray failed in his duty as a physician to care for his patient by deviating from standard practices and leaving Jackson unmonitored and alone after giving him the powerful anesthetic. The prosecution has centered their case on these two theories, while the defense maintains it was Jackson who administered the final dose of propofol and sedatives that ended his life. Throughout the lengthy trial, testimony was heard from several of Murray's girlfriends and patients, Jackson employees, paramedics and emergency room doctors, investigators and medical experts. The judge ordered closing arguments to be completed Thursday, so the jury may begin deliberations Friday. If convicted, Murray faces up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license. |
Fasten Your Seat Belts for 'Where in the World is Matt Lauer?' Posted: 03 Nov 2011 11:11 AM PDT "Today" co-host Matt Lauer embarks on his 10th week-long trip in a segment called "Where in the World is Matt Lauer?" Beginning Monday, Matt's big adventure kicks off with the journalist hitting five mystery cities in five days. Lauer did give a clue about his trip, based on the clothing he plans to wear, saying, "I won't be wearing a bathing suit on day one. There will probably be a parka sometime during the week." In past years, Matt has turned up in such far-flung spots as Mt. Everest, in Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat and the Panama Canal. Lauer also answered a few hot topic questions for "Extra." AJ Calloway sat down with Lauer and asked what he thought about the Madoffs, and whether he believes the family was clueless about the Ponzi scheme. Matt replied, "It's not my job to believe or not to believe. It's my job to ask the questions and let the people at home decide. Clearly that family has been torn apart in a lot of ways by what Bernie Madoff did, and I think that is going to be the legacy he leaves behind." Lauer also recalled Southern chef Paula Deen making him blush on "Today," saying, "She fondled me... she almost made out with me! She's a very provocative woman. You don't expect it, but she is, and she caught me off guard." |

Marketa Irglova Has a Solo Adventure on The Interface Posted: 03 Nov 2011 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Concerts and Tours, News, New Music, Exclusive, Q + A Gino DePinto Now a newly minted resident of New York City, Irglova stopped by The Interface to perform some tunes from her recently released solo debut, 'Anar' and talk about her future and life int the Big Apple. How do you approach writing solo as opposed to working with collaborators? Some writing is a really nice solitary process, in a way, because you can be a little self-conscious around other people. If it's just you, and you're at your favorite piano, or whatever instrument, and you feel comfortable, then somehow, I always feel like it's opening a door and letting whatever is to pass through pass. Often times, I'm surprised by what I'm writing or what I'm playing, and then that inspires me to keep going with it, so it ends up being a very adventurous process. |

Why Universal Studios Passed On The Dark Tower And At The Mountains of Madness Posted: 03 Nov 2011 09:01 AM PDT Source: Moveline Here's more from the extremely candid Meyer, speaking at the at the Savannah Film Festival to students and members of the public at the Savannah College of Art & Design. On why the studio passed on At the Mountains of Madness and Dark Tower: "We looked at the economics of [At the Mountains of Madness and Dark Tower] and it just didn't make sense for us, for what we would have to put out for what we could make back," he explained. "It didn't feel secure enough for us, and that's the reason we didn't do it." "They're both good projects, they just were more expensive than made sense for us to spend. If I thought that we could get a better return and everybody was willing to cut their gross, I wasn't afraid of the price — I was just afraid of the return. I didn't want to invest, |
